Fitbit cheating

So, if you were spending an hour in the back garden sawing wood, is it cheating to swap your fitbit to your sawing arm in order to gain extra steps? (I got 3,000. It was a lot of sawing).

I think it's fair enough. Husband is saying it's cheating.

On the app there is a q&a and it asks something along these lines. The example is a drummer. The reckoning is that the drumming will use as many, if not more calories than the equivalent steps so it is valid to count these.

blueskyinmarch · 31/05/2016 19:31

I also get steps from driving on the bumpy roads round here. DH gets them from fence painting. I get them from ironing. We love cheat steps in this house. Grin

Panicmode1 · 31/05/2016 19:47

I definitely get steps when riding, but as my instructor is brutal and we barely spend any time in walk, I think it counts and isn't a cheat.

I do average about 15,000 steps a day though (dog walking and school runs on foot every day help!)

StandoutMop · 31/05/2016 19:52

I lent mine to 7yo dd for an hour. It auto recognised 40mins of exercise in that time, which was just her going about her day. This explains why she can eat her own bodyweight in food and still see every single rib. Perhaps I should get off mumsnet and the sofa Grin

Trills · 31/05/2016 20:07

That sounds like a LOT of sawing.

lljkk · 31/05/2016 20:14

This is why I didn't like the fitbit, I only wanted it to count real steps. Jiggling my leg for 20 minutes = 700 steps? That was ridiculous.

DrowningInWallStickers · 31/05/2016 20:23

What is a Fitbit? aside from some weird thing that somehow counts how many steps you take...

sparechange · 31/05/2016 20:39

Clapping registers as steps...
I went to support a friend running the marathon last month, and 4 hours of clapping runners on registered nearly as many steps as if I'd run it Blush

waterfallsandmountains · 31/05/2016 20:45

Ah that explains why I had registered a lot of steps at a marathon recently but stood still for 6 hours Blush.

You are only cheating on yourself though unless you are in a team.

Kenworthington · 31/05/2016 20:51

Dh's fitbit logs his Motorbike riding as steps it's bloody annoying!

fruitpastille · 31/05/2016 20:51

Clapping works well.

But the best one is putting it on your toddlers wrist Grin

BennyTheBall · 31/05/2016 20:53

I put mine down my leggings when I do a spinning class! Equates to about 6000 steps!

Lighteningirll · 31/05/2016 20:58

My fit bit doesn't register crocheting, knitting or washing up. I've just bounced dog up and down (in lieu of baby he's tiny and loves it) didn't register a single step. I have checked in car journeys and on back of dh motorbike. It does register climbing in and out and on and off but doesn't register any steps at all whilst I'm seated. I wear it on my non dominant wrist.

Lighteningirll · 31/05/2016 21:00

Hmmm dh is suggesting alternatives to try out using wrist action now.........

Noofly · 31/05/2016 21:12

No, cheating is when DH asks me to wear his Fitbit because I'm taking the dog on a very very long walk. Hmm

HackerFucker22 · 31/05/2016 21:32

I just decided against a fitbit as I read some reviews it doesn't pick up 'pram walking' (I guess as your wrist is stationary on the handle and not swinging about)

I do a lot of pram walking so a fitbit I no good for me?

blueskyinmarch · 31/05/2016 21:32

I have often thought about putting mine on the dogs dollar.

gobbynorthernbird · 31/05/2016 21:35

Lightening, was about to say that apparently wanking counts as steps!

sparechange · 31/05/2016 21:36

Hacker, you can put it in your pocket or bag, or around hour ankle

EndoplasmicReticulum · 31/05/2016 23:50

Hacker you're probably right, I didn't get many steps in the supermarket pushing a trolley.

Lightening yes you do get steps from that ( probably).

PotteringAlong · 01/06/2016 07:09

Hacker I just put mine in my pocket when I'm pushing the prism!

PotteringAlong · 01/06/2016 07:10

Prism?! Pram Grin

BatmanLovesMarmite · 01/06/2016 07:14

I've got a Fitbit One because I didn't want the bracelet that everyone can see. I put it on the middle of my bra, between the cups.

thisonethennomore · 01/06/2016 07:15

I've got a One too, it only registers steps not arm waving.

InMySpareTime · 01/06/2016 07:16

I must be doing clapping wrong, Fitbit thinks I'm going into sleep mode whenever I applaud (or grind pepperConfused).
I count "Just Dance" movement as steps, it's more tiring than walking!
