AIBU to think this Supermarket is judging my parenting?

AIBU? Standing in a queue in Tesco with (home from uni) DD chatting to me. I was clutching a much anticipated bottle of Pimms, with accompanying lemonade, strawberries, mint etc... goodies going through when charmless checkoutee asks for age of said 21 year old DD and ID for her or she would not be able to sell me the Pimms. I calmly explained that I (substantially over 21) am buying said alcoholic beverage with my money and a) DD is only standing next to me b) its my money c) DD is over 21 and d) what on earth... the manager was called and I was allowed to purchase. AIBU to think that this is ridiculous - I understand that adults must not buy alcohol for underage children, but if you were - would it be Pimms, and would you have the "child" standing next to you?

And I don't have ID as i lost it so often when my boyfriend is buying fags i have to wait around the corner like a child

MyBreadIsEggy · 31/05/2016 16:20

I'm almost 22, DH is 26, and we both get asked for ID in Asda if we are shopping together and buy anything remotely alcoholic Hmm It's as if they checkout people look at DH as if he's one of those sad 20-something blokes who parks his suped up corsa in McDonald's car park with his 17 year old girlfriend in the passenger seat....and I'm the 17yo girlfriend Hmm

Gileswithachainsaw · 31/05/2016 16:22

you are 22 and 26 though.

if it's 25 the cashier is right to ID you. yku are under the limit and your dh o's only just over it

and if it's 21 well again yku ate only just over it . an acceptable margin surely.

TheWernethWife · 31/05/2016 16:22

Who came up with the ridiculous "Think 25" in all supermarkets. The law is that you have to be 18 or over to buy alcohol. It's nothing but the supermarkets covering their arse and nothing about protecting customers.

RaeSkywalker · 31/05/2016 16:24

Bolograph- yes, but how do you prove it wasn't "knowingly"? I would've deferred to a manager if anyone had teen/ young adult with them with no ID. It could be looked upon that ignoring alcohol + teen present for transaction was "knowing". Not worth the risk.

Gileswithachainsaw · 31/05/2016 16:24

It's to cover everyone who could he underage.

sone peope still look 12 at 18.

some look. scarily older at 16.

at 17/18 you could look 21/22.

but it's doubtful you would look 25

that's the point

YouTheCat · 31/05/2016 16:25

This is why I always make sure dd has her id with her if we are doing the food shop together. We've never been asked but I'd hate to be denied my wine because of some easily avoided bureaucracy.

I have no problem with a cashier covering their back because of these nutty laws so long there is some common sense applied.

Lovewineandchocs · 31/05/2016 16:25

My work colleague (who is 30 but looks really young) was shopping with her boyfriend. The cashier asked her for ID as she was buying a bottle of wine. She showed her driving licence but the cashier still didn't believe it was her, and kept saying "that's your sister, isn't it?" Her boyfriend then tried to buy the wine but was told he couldn't buy it for an underage drinker! They had to go somewhere else. Bonkers! Smile

BathshebaDarkstone · 31/05/2016 16:28

My DC have never been asked for ID when I've bought my weekly bottle of cider. They're 8 and 4. Hmm

Abbinob · 31/05/2016 16:29

Mynreadiseggy- 17 year olds, 21 year olds and even 26 year olds can look practicly the exact same age. I've ID'd people and been shocked at their actual age countless times, and in fact most of the 20 somethings who are buying booze already have their ID in their hand because they know the whole think 25 thing by now.
I'm 25 and when I'm at work on a weekend people always ask me if I'm at school still, because people aren't physic and 17 year olds can look older and 20 something year olds can look younger..that's the whole point in the rule

Lovewineandchocs · 31/05/2016 16:30

No, my 7 and 2 year old haven't either 😀Wine

Abbinob · 31/05/2016 16:30

I had to do this thing where they had photos of people and you had to guess the ahem I got them all wrong l. I'd guessed a 16 year old as being 30 and a few 30 year olds as being 20! It's harder than you think

ptumbi · 31/05/2016 16:31

by law she did need to check both I.d's. - what id? We don;t have ID cards, not everyone has a driving licence (not can get one) and young people shouldn't be carrying passports about.

My ds2 (19) can't get a driving licence, and applied for a 'citizen card' for id to Uni bars. Not all will accept it, although they are supposed to.

FayKorgasm · 31/05/2016 16:36

I always ask for ID for anyone who looks under 25 and ask is it for minors. I have bills to pay and need my job.

BathshebaDarkstone · 31/05/2016 16:37

But mummy I DON'T like WINE. GrinGrinGrin

5tardusty · 31/05/2016 16:38

YABU- Don't blame the staff member, blame the crazy rule. Retail workers get 'mystery shopped' all the time can be prosecuted if they do not abide by the rules.

teafortoads · 31/05/2016 16:39

Morrisons staff refused to sell me a bottle of red wine when I was in my early 30s, then proceeded to tell me that they wouldn't sell it to my husband (who was waiting by the door, and was summoned over by me) as he might let me drink it. Was pretty mortified but also massively flattered as I look like a bag of smashed crabs if viewed in natural light. Red wine? Seriously? Do under aged drinkers go for Pimms and red wine these days?

NeedACleverNN · 31/05/2016 16:39

I'm 28 this year and some people still think I'm about 18-19.

StandoutMop · 31/05/2016 16:39

Tesco deliver wine (and gin and vodka) to my house, even when dd (9) opens the door. Perhaps I'll have to get her to hide upstairs in a couple of years in case they think is for her.

Gileswithachainsaw · 31/05/2016 16:41

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT PRECONCEIVED IDEAS YOU HAVE OF WHAT YOUNGSTERD DRINK.

as far as policies are concerned alcohol is alcohol.

and as I've said before the plants in some situations are over 18. they just aren't over 21/25

if they are In doubt they have to check.

Bolograph · 31/05/2016 16:41

the manager was called and I was allowed to purchase

So all the people saying this was policy and they had no choice: how come the manager doesn't agree? On previous such threads it's been claimed that staff are always backed up by managers who again have no choice: clearly not.

Kittyrobin · 31/05/2016 16:45

Each supermarket had their own policy. Where I used to work they had to I'd everyone in the group if one was buying alcohol but then they changed it to just the person buying alcohol.

The manager should not have gone against the checkout staff. Even if he thought it was ridiculous that is bad form!

passmethewineplease · 31/05/2016 16:47

YABU. She doesn't make the rules. She will get in trouble if she breaks them though.

TS routinely spot check supermarkets, if she failed to ID she'd not only gave her employers but also the police.

At least that is what sainsburys told me, she also could of been new and a bit nervous about not IDing people?

handslikecowstits · 31/05/2016 16:47

I got IDed a few weeks ago in M&S buying a bottle of wine.

The cashier: Can I ask how old you are?
Me: Yes. I'm 38!

Poor girl's face went pillar box red. She confided that any fines get taken out of their wages. Don't know if that's true or not.

I thought they might have had to widen the doors for me to get my big head through. Grin

As for you OP, they are judging. It's bollocks because I don't think policies like this really stop underage drinking and its attendant problems at all.

MummyBex1985 · 31/05/2016 16:48

I wonder if I'll ever get IDd with my 12 year old Grin

When I was 28 I was refused service in Asda because I didn't have ID... I was buying alcohol free beer, ffs Hmm

I also got IDd in a pub buying a Diet Coke when I was pregnant.

And my dad was IDd in the coop, aged 50 - because they introduced a new policy of IDing everyone after they were caught selling to a minor.

The world is bonkers!!
