To think school trip shouldn't be to a creationist zoo?

DH and I have issues about animal welfare and creationism.

Class at DD's (non-faith state school) had a trip to a creationist zoo this week and now DDs teacher wants to go. We're not best pleased.

WIBU.

soupersal you are getting het up about nothing .maybe the school sees it as a way to tie in religion with the animal project all schools must teach religion .faiths off all kind i would be unhappy if the trip got cancelled or changed just because you were pally with the teacher .just keep your daughter off .

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/05/2016 11:43

No, schools must teach about religion. They should not be teaching anything that promotes creationism as part of science. These are two aspects of the curriculum that shouldn't be linked in this way.

BadDoGooder · 27/05/2016 11:44

TBH honest the more I know about this place, the more the creationism pales into insignificance besides the appalling animal welfare.

BrieandChill this.... "The kids go round and see the animals (rhinos, elephants etc that aren't in Bristol zoo) then go crazy in the various play areas."
Did you never stop to think why other zoos no longer have elephants/rhinos etc??

It's fucking cruel to keep wide ranging, hugely social animals in tiny enclosures, in solitary confinement.
Weunderstand now that it's not good for them or nice.

I urge everyone on this thread who has been, or thinking of going, to watch the videos that EveryoneElsie and someone else posted on this thread.
They are an awful place, and couldn't give a flying fuck about the animals.

GIVE YOUR MONEY TO ZOOS THAT DO REAL CONSERVATION WORK, NOT EXPLOIT ANIMALS FOR PROFIT AND IDEOLOGY

greedygorb · 27/05/2016 11:46

God I would be raging. Creationism is utter bollocks. Fact. There is no place for it in any school unless it's a school run by and for fundamentalist nutters. I'm from NI so I get absolutely worked up about this sort of stuff.

LagunaBubbles · 27/05/2016 11:46

Promoting creationism is banned here in schools as far as Im aware. (Im in Scotland).

The trip hasn't even been arranged yet.

No schools should NEVER conflate religion with science.
I am completely with the OP, there are plenty of places that are scientific they can go to.

If they are learning about religion- go to a religious place, if they are learning about science (and animal knowledge is science) they go to sciency places.

It's not an over reaction, science was held back for hundreds of years because people refused to seperate relgion from science.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/05/2016 11:49

It's banned in England too, Laguna and legally binding as far as I'm aware. It would be very difficult to tie these two areas of the curriculum together without breaking the law.

mrsmugoo · 27/05/2016 11:51

Oh I've been there. Had no idea it was creationist. Although now I think about it, the name kind of gives it away.

fishybits · 27/05/2016 11:51

I couldn't give two hoots about the creationism but I really bloody minded how the small pets were manhandled by the children and "keepers". It was dreadful to watch.

I complained and was completely ignored. They couldn't have cared less Sad

BreakingDad77 · 27/05/2016 11:51

I'm assuming no dino trail then......

HandsomeGroomGiveHerRoom · 27/05/2016 11:55

Ah, time to revisit this...

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/a2301982-Im-getting-sick-and-tired-of-dinosaurs-being-forced-on-our-children

I don't care if it was bollocks, that thread was ace Grin

PurpleCrazyHorse · 27/05/2016 11:55

I'm a Christian and I wouldn't go with my children. I would raise my concerns and withdraw my child (maybe go to Bristol Zoo or a farm park with them instead).

PurpleCrazyHorse · 27/05/2016 11:57

Oh and DD just loves dinosaurs and Jurassic Park is her favourite film Grin

BertrandRussell · 27/05/2016 11:58

"I'm assuming no dino trail then......"

What about the "Ride a Stegosaurus with Jesus" trail?

BadDoGooder · 27/05/2016 12:11

Ride a Stegosaurus with Jesus Grin

Handsome I've just skimmed a bit of that thread!! Shock Grin

I want a biblical dino trail now, just for kicks.
You could have the disciples riding raptors.......

Kitsa · 27/05/2016 12:16

No kid of mine will be going to a zoo let alone a creationist one.

SouperSal · 27/05/2016 12:20

I'm not anti-zoo (we've only been to 3 (once each) since DD has been born). With family in SA I save animal viewing for when we can do it in their natural habitat, where possible.

"Oh, I love zebras! How come they have those stripy coats that camouflage them so well?"

From the Guardian article:

"We think that evidence shows the world is much older than 6000 years but much younger than 4.5 billion years."

They suggest that radioactive decay was much faster in the past which is why the age has been overestimated by scientists. Hmm

"30 reasons why apes are not related to man." Sexist as well as idiotic.

"Bacteria do not look as if they were the products of chance. They look as if they have been designed."

Ilovewillow · 27/05/2016 12:32

If it were a faith school and you are there simply because you are in catchment then I'm not sure a complaint is valid but since you have stated its a non faith school then I would gently raise my concerns.

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 27/05/2016 12:32

Four thousand years ego - they're young earthers...

Theres a lovely poster with "how we are 100% absolutely, positively not related to apes" if you google or something along those lines
