DH and I have issues about animal welfare and creationism.

Class at DD's (non-faith state school) had a trip to a creationist zoo this week and now DDs teacher wants to go. We're not best pleased.

WIBU.

So you don't agree that evolution is fact, Cadenza?

Lweji · 27/05/2016 21:17

Also, if you look properly, the world is NOT a well fine tuned clock. Quite the oposite.

Yes I have a issue with it.

"fact..It's the 'theory.of evolution ' My reason for not.wanting it presented as fact dates from my aethist day studying anthropology and archaeology at uni. I'm not going to write an essay answer here!" if you had studies archaeology and anthropology at university you would know what the word "theory" means in this context.

DuckAndPancakes · 27/05/2016 21:26

Scientific theory is an explanation of something that has been substantially tested and proven.

It's not like "I have an idea, all the animals on the planet were shoved on a boat for 40 days and nights (in pairs) and that's why they're here!"

YANBU for all the reasons stated: it's putting funds into the coffers of creationists, poor animal welfare, they breed animals and supply to a trainer who sells them on to circuses.

Also, the ticket prices for The Wild Place Project are considerably cheaper. It's run by Bristol Zoo, presents animals in as close to their natural environment as possible and is just off the M5 near Cribbs Causeway junction.

There's some horrific stuff in the bible and Christianity that is just not right but obviously no Christian mentions those bits

Scientific theory is an explanation of something that has been substantially tested and proven.

Actually, it's a proposition that can be tested or disproved. It stands until it's shown to be incorrect.
It can't be proven.
But, evolution has been tested for over 150 years and it hasn't been shown to be incorrect so far.

Creationism is not a theory because it can't be tested at all.
Except that a young Earth theory has certainly been shown to be incorrect

Greenyogagirl · 27/05/2016 21:39

When people evolve to realise God is a bit crap so brush him under the carpet and create a better one 😁

I have had no problems in my children going to the wonderful hindu and mosque buildings, synagogues and all soprts over the years BUT a creationist zoo is totally different. It is not a place of worship and it is peddling lies. By all means take them to an evangelical church to look around but a creationist zoo is a step too far for any school particularly if the zoo is paid. None of the temples children visit on school trips charge for the visit.

SouperSal · 07/06/2016 14:59

UPDATE: headteacher rang me this morning. He checked out the zoo (online) over half term and agreed that there was some worrying stuff about animal welfare and creationist messages. He raised it at their staff meeting last night and the teacher that led the other trip said that thinkin about it, there were signs brings weren't great there. The teachers agreed unanimously not to go there again. The school will not support the organisation. They're looking into the many alternatives for the trip. He was very grateful for me having raised concerns.

Thanks for all your support on this. Wine and Cake for all!!

yay

down with nonsense

oliviaclottedcream · 07/06/2016 17:27

I agree.. If you're confident and secure in your beliefs, you really needn't censor your child's exposure to a different perspective.

SouperSal · 07/06/2016 18:08

Have you RTFT, olivia?

One small step in fighting the insidious Creationists. Angry Bird

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 07/06/2016 18:16

Well done for stopping the trip. They are pedlars of crap which shouldn't be being presented to kids as facts.

Mishaps · 07/06/2016 18:21

Children in school are taught science alongside religion - that's fine - the two are not mutually exclusive. But anti-science (which is what creationism is) is in a different league and the school should not be going there. Keep her off for the day - take her to a proper zoo.
