A man that looks on glass
On it may stay his eye

God is love His the care? We used to sing that in Assembly with Mr Clack, the music teacher, pounding the keys. He taught us brilliant hymns and inspired me to listen to classical music.

EmilyAlice · 24/05/2016 18:15

Yup. Has a very tricky intro pounding down the keys before the singers come in on the beat (or not).
We used to sing the chorus in Latin ideo gloria in excelsis deo.

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 18:17

As far as I know Mr Clack was in the Salvation Army, so Latin probably wasn't his language of choice!

sandfish · 24/05/2016 18:18

No-one else on this thread likes "Nearer My God to Thee" then?

Sixweekstowait · 24/05/2016 18:21

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
Whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy,
Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
Your bliss in our hearts, Lord,
At the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
Be there at our labours and give us, we pray,
Your strength in our hearts, Lord,
At the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
Your hands swift to welcome, Your arms to embrace.
Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
Your love in our hearts, Lord,
At the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
Your peace in our hearts, Lord,
At the end of the day.

This always brings tears to my eyes since I sang it twice in less than two weeks a few years ago - the first time at an ineffably sad funeral of a dear friend who had committed suicide and then at the wedding of a friend of my dd's who is a honorary daughter. I cried all the way through both times -both times it was such a mixture of emotions and the second time such joy and sadness all inextricably intermingled

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 18:24

Sorry sandfish not one I have sung very often.

Lucydogz · 24/05/2016 18:28

changes to Hills of the North Rejoice

Wordsaremything · 24/05/2016 18:29

Immortal, invisible, God only wise
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes

Loved the words not the most stirring of melodies though.

Wordsaremything · 24/05/2016 18:32

Thanks Lucy SadSadSad

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 18:34

Sad The original is so much more poetic.

sandfish · 24/05/2016 18:35

Nearer my God to Thee:

Wordsaremything · 24/05/2016 18:45

Ooh another -
A man that looks on glass
On it may stay his eye
And if it pleaseth through it pass
And then the heaven espy

Wordsaremything · 24/05/2016 18:46

Blush sorry just realised that one kicked the thread off. Sorry.

Persephone76 · 24/05/2016 18:48

How about...

"The church with Psalms must shout,
No door can keep them out"

Love this thread!

Wordsaremything · 24/05/2016 18:50

Who else loves:
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart

Also:
No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in him, is mine;
alive in him, my living Head,
and clothed in righteousness divine,
bold I approach th' eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Let all the world in every corner sing!
Is that RVW again?

Bogburglar99 · 24/05/2016 19:11

His kingdom stretch from shore to shore/ Till moons shall wax and wane no more

Sometimes i swear I went on to do English at uni as a result of over exposure to the language of hymns!

Bogburglar99 · 24/05/2016 19:13

Apparently it is - words by George Herbert again. I'm going to have to make friends with VW after all. There's The Truth Sent from Above to take into consideration as well.

goshnotme · 24/05/2016 19:20

This line, from "My song is love unknown":

"But oh my friend, my friend indeed".

I love that line.

Madhairday · 24/05/2016 19:25

Love this thread!

Lumpy, Oceans is one of my favourites too.

I love the words in this:

Crown him the Lord of years
The Potentate of time
Creator of the rolling spheres
Ineffably sublime!
All hail, Redeemer hail
For thou hast died for me
Thy praise shall never never fail
throughout eternity.

I hate that they modernised this one in some books - they took out ineffably sublime!! Utter travesty.

Madhairday · 24/05/2016 19:27

Oooh that's Jesus shall reign where'er the sun, bogburglar :)

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 24/05/2016 19:37

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift or firm remain?

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Stedfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Saviour' s love.

Somebody mentioned this upthread? A firm favourite here.
