Whenever I say I keep rats. Yesterday for example i was in PAH and had my heartstrings pulled by the little girl in the picture i asked the guy if I could see her out and hold her. A girl walked past and said ewwwww she's holding a rat, thats disgusting.

Its the face they make too. They are the best pets but of course its ok if people don't like them but why feel the need to tell me their disgusting etc

I miss my ratties but the heartbreak was too much. They dont live long enough :(

We had both boys and girls(in separate cages, never met each other)and i loved both sets as they were so different.

I understand that people dont like them but i cant stand snakes but i'd certainly never go 'ewww' at someones much loved pet, its kind of rude.

The funniest thing I find about mumsnet is I post a thread on a serious health issue I'm worried about and I get 1 person responding yet I post a thread about my rats and it results in a thread title amendment and lots of discussion.

Fancy rats are just too cute for words. I have had 4. I daren't get any more. I would never be able to stop!

I love my pet rats rats. And their prehensile tails. They make wonderful pets and are very affectionate. But some (weird) people don't like them. I don't understand why, but do accept it.

A further point: you can give your animals all the 'love' you want if it makes you feel good but don't kid yourself they love you back.

Maybe my pets don't 'love' me in the same way my kids 'love' me, but they certainly enjoy my company and want to be around me. I show them affection in the way of 'love' and they show it back to me in their own, animal way. That, to me, is a two way relationship even if we both don't understand the same basic concept of 'love'.

I had 6 at one point, they have all died now. Would love some more but just don't have the time at the moment.

i dont like rats, they give me the heebies. I dont like dogs or cats either though, so am just as likely to be 'ew' about those. take your slobbering, hairy things away from me.

We have cats & I don't consider kitkats compatible with ratties.

I had one who would try and steal my drinks. He loved Stella but Baileys was his absolute favourite. Little bugger. He would come to his name!

I would secretly Eurgh at reptiles or Giant Land Snails ( sorry EatShitDerek ) or anything insect#ey (sorry hiddenhome )

I like rats (pet ones) but have never kept them. Their tails feel completely different to what you expect and they have amazing skinny feet.

But , I like my guinea pigs more, they are not so clever (you know it's true piggies) and they don't climb Smile

Wish there was a like button for all the cute ratties!

We also have a cat, he's been nipped by the rats. But we usually keep him out of the room they're in especially when the ratties are free roaming.

Rats are lovely pets, we had a pair of sisters who were very sweet. We also had a trio of cats and the only injury was to two of the cats who used to be fascinated by the cage and try to play (genuinely play) with the rats - and if they weren't then one of the rats would thump on the bars until they came over to play. Very very odd!

The cats are hairy (Maine Coons) and if the cats were sitting close one of the rats used to reach through the bars and grab clumps of their fur and then drag it in to their little house for bedding.
