to be pissed off when people say ewwwww..........(Note from MNHQ: this is NOT a trigger warning, but just gently letting you know that this thread contains pics of pet rats)

Whenever I say I keep rats. Yesterday for example i was in PAH and had my heartstrings pulled by the little girl in the picture i asked the guy if I could see her out and hold her. A girl walked past and said ewwwww she's holding a rat, thats disgusting.

Its the face they make too. They are the best pets but of course its ok if people don't like them but why feel the need to tell me their disgusting etc

Worral given some of the threads on MN, I wonder how some people manage to function in society.

Rats - ok.
Dogs - ewwwww/'keep it the fuck away from me'
Cats - mine is the fifth love of my life but loads of people I know can't abide cats

They are just animals OP, they can't get offended or understand and if you are offended you need to grow a thicker skin (like a rhino - ewwwwww).

WorraLiberty · 14/05/2016 17:50

Fair point Nanna Grin

It's just that often the people who are shouting for HQ to edit titles to warn of pics of rats/spiders/snakes etc, can often be seen posting about Facebook.

How the fuck do they manage a website like that if they can't go running to someone to edit things? Confused

TrickyD · 14/05/2016 17:52

Rats are definitely the best pets! DSs used to have them and I loved them dearly. They enjoyed nestling in my cleavage and peeping out and playing in our bed.

Much nicer than hamsters.

DawnMumsnet · 14/05/2016 17:58

@BertrandRussell

Referring to animals as little girls or little boys and fur babies gets the ewwwww reaction from me. And for goodness sake- a "trigger warning" because a thread has a minute picture of a rat? Give me strength!

To be fair, it wasn't an actual TRIGGER WARNING! It was just a nice, genial 'please note'. But we take your point. Wink

worra
I knew the thread title would get changed

I genuinely wonder how some people manage to get around the rest of the internet

This.^

So many delicate flowers post in here. Hmm

BoopTheSnoot · 14/05/2016 18:07

Oh I love rats, I used to have four of them. Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman and Mellow Yellow. They were awesome, very intelligent and very clean. Honestly, they're fab pets. They come to you when you call them and mine never bit me once.

Palomb · 14/05/2016 18:12

I can't believe mnhq have put a warning on this. How bloody ridiculous. This is a site for adults! Lots of people have phobias of lots of weird things. Carry on like this and every thread will have to have a trigger warning on it!

Fireandflames666 · 14/05/2016 18:30

I think rats are sweet. It's the random weeing that puts me off keeping one myself.

meddie · 14/05/2016 18:38

I still miss my ratty Monty. he used to let himself out the cage every morning when I come home from work and be standing on his back legs on the 3rd step up to greet me. Then he would run up to my shoulder and excitedly chatter in my ear .
Amazing little animals, make lovely pets.

Claraoswald36 · 14/05/2016 18:41

I love pet rats they are gorgeous. Yanbu

Quiero · 14/05/2016 18:41

You don't often get a lol from me but a 'rat warning' - fuck me, I've seen it all now.

Merd · 14/05/2016 18:41

The trigger warning made me giggle a bit too, but hey, it got me to read the thread as I couldn't believe it was actually a warning about rats ... And it really was!

Op maybe call one of them "Ewe" and then say "oh! You know his name! Here, hold him!" Grin

Pet rats tried to kill me.

16 hours on a drip. Back to back nebulisers. Oxygen.

Never have asthma if I'm not near rats.

I still kept them though Grin

expatinscotland · 14/05/2016 19:02

The only good rat is a dead rat.

PotatosMum · 14/05/2016 19:21

Expat, what a cruel thing to say. Why on earth would you choose to say something that would obviously upset people, unless you're a cold hearted attention seeking fuckwit that is Smile

SoupDragon · 14/05/2016 19:24

So what does your comment make you, PotatosMum?

expatinscotland · 14/05/2016 19:25

Nice one, Potatos. I'll qualify my earlier statement then, the only good rat is a rat my cat's killed. There, that doesn't break talk guidelines, but calling someone a fuckwit does, even when it's finished with a silly PA smiley face.

[gives cat a treat, strokes his head and says, 'Good kitty!']

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 14/05/2016 19:28

See, expat's comment willuld be mean and uncalled-for if it was about a human, but it isn't - it's about a rat rodent. I'm actually really soft about animals and as duch am dead against them being made to exist as a form of human entertainment, living in a cage fgs, or parading around a showring. However, I am not sentimental about them and I do not anthropomorphise them by believing yhem to respond to or share in human emotions. If yhat makes me 'delightful', so be it.

expatinscotland · 14/05/2016 19:32

I gather several were so upset by seeing photos of rats they contacted HQ and the title had to be amended. There's a lot of upsetness on MN.

PPie10 · 14/05/2016 19:39

Sorry but I do think they are gross and probably would be ewww about it

TimeIhadaNameChange · 14/05/2016 19:40

I totally understand, it's similar to when someone reacts that way to something you're eating. I can just about forgive the children at the nursery I work at doing that (though I do pull them up on it) but when my mother goes 'eeeew!' and pulls faces I find it incredibly rude. It's not like she has to eat it, and I'd never do the same to her.

Going back to animals, I was slightly taken aback when someone asked me the other day why I have so many pets. Ok, so it,s unusual for an adult to have rabbits and guineas (cats and hens are more normal here) but, as I said to her, they bring me joy.

Rats are cute. If I'd seen you I'd have wanted a cuddle (with ratty, not so much with you!)!!!

onenutshortofasnickers · 14/05/2016 20:01

I posted all my pictures on the wrong thread! [Blush] current ratties Thor and Loki and a pic of my old boys tommy and olly
