Whenever I say I keep rats. Yesterday for example i was in PAH and had my heartstrings pulled by the little girl in the picture i asked the guy if I could see her out and hold her. A girl walked past and said ewwwww she's holding a rat, thats disgusting.

Its the face they make too. They are the best pets but of course its ok if people don't like them but why feel the need to tell me their disgusting etc

My point is I have enough manners not to comment negatively on the appearance of anybody and I don't judge people who like things I don't.

YANBU. If someone has a favourite interest it's not very polite to forcefully say you can't stand it. It must get wearing to constantly have people being so negative. How would anyone else feel if every time they mentioned their favourite interest, people were really negative about it?

Umbongo its a pet. We love our pets. Its not some random animal in the wild. Its pets that we love, spend time with give affection to and get it back.

I really hope you don't have any pets

People who say "ewwww" about anything someone else is clearly delighted with are being rude.

I am often revolted by people's choice of food, clothes, music, hair colour, fingernails, etc, but I would never make a nasty comment. I have never been disgusted by a living creature (except for some people's husbands).

Yes I have a few pets. I just don't get the huge attatcment people make to them. They are just animals that I happen to share my house with. I don't get sad when they go and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't give a toss if I dropped dead in front of them.

I don't get the attachment thing with animals either.

Sure, I'm fond of them but wouldn't go as far as to call them my "fur babies" as so many people do. Hmm

Why have pets when there is not effect on your life? Why spend time and energy on something when you really don't care. My pets enrich my life and I do the same for them. I love spending time with them. They expect very little from you and give unconditional love back.

I like rats, lovely pets and I have had a few over the years. But lots of people dislike rats, can't blame them as their tails are a bit weird and historically wild rats have a very bad rep! I don't like dogs, people get pretty offended when you tell them that Grin

I love rats. I don't get offended when people say 'Ew', but it does annoy me that people won't give them a chance and the over dramatics kind of irritates me.

God, I'm a fucking wreck. I've never known anyone not be sad when their pets die!

Look at all the dog haters on MN. Full of Ewwwwws about canines. Bit daft to give the Ewwwww people your headspace. Who cares what they think.

I'm also 90% with Umbongo. A pet is still just an animal. I eat animals so I'd be a hypocrite to be sentimental just because some animals are pets. I am :( when my pets die.

I like pet rats, btw (in spite of having owned a few psycho biters... rescues I hasten to add, not because I made 'em into psychos).

Yup, never got this myself either.

I don't have them but have always appreciated the rat as one of the worlds greatest cleaner uppers as their great contribution.

When I hear someone say I hate rats, I say but do you go awww or eughhh at a fox? Large rat with "cute" hair...

Im not a vegetarian but a pet is an animal you choose and invest in so is different to other animals.

Would you mind if we put a little warning in your thread title? We've had a few reports from people who, while they were careful not to say "ewwwww", were still a bit unnerved by the rat pics.

Sorry, OP, but lots of people are phobic about rats and wouldn't knowingly step into a building that contained one. I have to get my partner to confirm the contents of the pet enclosures at PaH before I look at them, just in case. It's nice that you like your pets, but... Ew.
