Saw this in Sainsbury's tonight Shock. It's age 3. Seriously? Is a 'selfie queen' a desirable label for a toddler?

WTF is wrong with a Peppa Pig t-shirt for this age groupConfused?

AIBU to think this child's t-shirt is inappropriate

YANBU

Seems innocent enough, if a little naff but actually it clearly demonstrates what's wrong with how our societies view and treat females #DoNotGetMeStarted - I'll be ranting till the middle of next week!

xandra588 · 11/05/2016 12:52

I wouldn't say inappropriate, but the t-shirt definitely is not age ranged accurately.

ManaFleet · 11/05/2016 13:35

I don't know about inappropriate (I'm dithering on that), but certainly tasteless, tacky and pretty bloody depressing.

Brightredpencil · 11/05/2016 13:40

Totally agree OP. You may find the Facebook group Let Clothes be clothes a useful place to join.

CheesyWeez · 11/05/2016 13:55

Thumb that's awful, the 'buy our product because you're thick" ad.

Harumph. I don't have periods any more (yay!) and I'm pretty good at maths, thank you.

HappyNevertheless · 11/05/2016 13:59

What Italian said at the start of this thread.

It gives a very sexist idea of what a girl/woman is, aka one that exists only for appearances and photos.

When my two dcs, both boys, were little, I was as annoyed by the boys clothes that were all 'army' type of stuff (or guns or whatever).
The sexism works both ways and gives totally the wrong message to both gender TBH.

Justontherightsideofnormal · 11/05/2016 15:07

That is tacky with a capital T , this should go in the blackhole of children clothes along with Disney emblazoned clothes, little girl faux fur coats and cheap crappy naff plastic shoes.

Clandestino · 11/05/2016 15:10

It's a bit naff but I absolutely despise Peppa Pig so if I had to choose between those two, I'd pick this one if it were a situation of going naked or this.
DD is 6 and she loves admiring herself in front of a mirror. She'd be talking, twirling her hair while keeping an eye on her reflection to see how she looks. It's hilarious, tbh.

ImNotThatGirl · 11/05/2016 15:41

I was hoping this thread would veerinto competitive baby grow discussions. They are my fave threads. Mine wore plain white baby grows until they started school, of course.

Justontherightsideofnormal · 11/05/2016 16:13

My ds has a "worlds best son " which he wears most days he has his 15th birthday tomorrow

TickettyBoo · 11/05/2016 18:02

Hate it. Though I hate any slogan t-shirts and refuse to buy them!

TickettyBoo · 11/05/2016 18:03

I'll put leopard print kids clothes in the same bracket of awfulness if I may Shock

OneMagnumisneverenough · 11/05/2016 18:07

I was hoping this thread would veerinto competitive baby grow discussions. They are my fave threads. Mine wore plain white baby grows until they started school, of course.

I hope they were handed down babygros worn by at least 5 previous children either bought from John Lewis or Lidl.

elh1605 · 11/05/2016 19:14

I don't find it as inappropriate as the bikinis you get for girls as young as 3-they are extremely inappropriate and unnecessary 😡😡

squizita · 11/05/2016 19:15

I sometimes deliberately buy appropriate but non-sanctimum clothing (eg Peppa Pig, slightly jarring bright prints, slogan tshirts albeit nothing dodgy) just to confound and protect myself from a certain type of competitive parent.
I find it very effective.
Sometimes they patronising ask where they know me from and I reel off the terribly middle class, social justice warrior stuff they've seen me at and watch them reel.
Peppa is a precocious little brat but my dd likes her (well George and Dinosaur mainly) so what the heck? It is all from NCT nearly new sales though. Ones I've volunteered at.

squizita · 11/05/2016 19:17

Elh crop top/vest and big pants bikinis (as opposed to boob shape ones which are completely wtf) are very useful indeed for kids still in nappies or training pants...

SueTrinder · 11/05/2016 20:38

Someone asked about 'age 3 to 12' ranges. DH and I are short and 2 of our kids are very short (think

RiverTam · 11/05/2016 21:01

It would be better (I think Next might do this) to have the younger girls stuff go up to an older age, so up to 8 perhaps. I've stopped shopping in Sainsbo's now that DD is out of the young girls stuff, as most of it seem more suitable for a 12 yo than a 6 yo. Also, none of them do capture the heights - DD is slim but long legs (so age 5 waist but 7 leg) and they're all hopeless!

Lukesme · 12/05/2016 06:57

Totally inappropriate but then we see hell bent on turning our young girls into "sassy"" preteens from an early age. I am not a bra burner but we as a society seem to push the idea of women as vain pouting heavily made up fashion followers with no more brain cells than is required to decide upon the right accessories. A t shirt is harmless in itself but it's one of the millions of subtle messages we are giving our kids.

Feebeela · 12/05/2016 13:06

I'm a Teacher in a school with no uniform and these slogan T shirts are a right PITA. 'I break the rules', 'I don't do homework', 'I'd rather play x box' type slogans are sending the wrong messages to our kids.

I have had an 8 year old in my class come to school with a T shirt that said "I'm too sexy for this T shirt!" I was shocked! Genuinely inappropriate for an 8 year old. When I spoke to Mum at pick up, she told me to mind my own effing business. So obviously, it's OK for your little girl to have a T shirt saying she is 'sexy'....Hmm

I've also had a 6 year old come to school in a 'Future Porn Star' T shirt. Again, mum thought I was an interfering middle class do gooder when I said it was not appropriate for school.

CazBaa · 12/05/2016 13:18

I once mounted a one woman campaign asking individual Ebay traders to stop describing children’s clothing as “sexy” (we were talking toddlers' swimsuits). Limited success. Ebay not interested. Sigh.

hauxb001 · 12/05/2016 14:01

So ..... " Selfie Pig ?"

WeDoNotSow · 12/05/2016 18:00

What's wrong with faux fur coats. I had one when I was little AND it was leopard print

I also had the matching hat and muff.

WeDoNotSow · 12/05/2016 18:00

'Future porn star' now THAT'S fucking inappropriate!!

WeDoNotSow · 12/05/2016 18:01
