Saw this in Sainsbury's tonight Shock. It's age 3. Seriously? Is a 'selfie queen' a desirable label for a toddler?

WTF is wrong with a Peppa Pig t-shirt for this age groupConfused?

Naff and awful.

OTOH a colleague told me about a 3 year old in her extended family who was shopping with her granny. The granny saw a pink, sparkly jumper with fairies or some such on it it, thought it would be just what a 3 year old would love, and asked the Gd if she'd like it.

3 year old looked down her nose and said snifflily, 'I only wear designer.'

So on balance I'd prefer a kid who liked naff at that age.

Said 3 year old turned into a ghastly spoiled brat, not surprisingly.

APotterWithAHappyAtmosphere · 10/05/2016 08:26

I suppose the point is that they would only make that t shirt for a girl. I've seen lots of t shirts for boys with images of slr-style cameras hanging round the neck but never one that implied they like having their own photo taken. As far as I have been able to tell, many little boys love taking selfies as much as many little girls do.

It's the usual trope:
boy = active, adventurer
girl = passive, vain

Small things but they add up to a big picture.

(ps I have 1 DS so no boy-bashing here)

LittleLionMansMummy · 10/05/2016 08:30

It's naff, as are most slogan t-shirts tbh. But not inappropriate. Clearly at 5yo ds is too young for a phone, but he loves taking selfies with his big sister (16) and could conceivably be described as a selfie king.

itsonlysubterfuge · 10/05/2016 08:31

Saw a onesie for a baby that read "Daddy asked Mommy for a blowjob".

Also, little kids love taking pictures of themselves and looking at themselves in a mirror. If you replace a mobile with one of those throwaway cameras and the word selfie with taking pictures of yourself. I really don't think it's bad.

VestalVirgin · 10/05/2016 08:32

Sexist and shitty, though "inappropriate" to me implies something sexual, so perhaps not that. (Not a native speaker, but inappropriate sounds a lot like improper to me)

MackerelOfFact · 10/05/2016 08:39

Can't find it in myself to be bothered by this. Selfie is just short for self-portrait, surely? Whether it's taken with an iPhone or scribbled in Crayola, it's something lots of little children like to do.

You can also buy men's t-shirts with the same slogan.

FWIW I don't think Peppa Pig clothing is any more tasteful, but kids like it, so there you go.

why is it sexist?

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 10/05/2016 09:18

it could be worse...............it could be PINK!

VestalVirgin · 10/05/2016 09:19

why is it sexist?

PotterWithAHappyAtmosphere explained why just above. I see no need to repeat things.

Note how the men's shirts Mackerel mentions have "Selfie Queen" on them. It is a heavily gendered term.

jeavcike · 10/05/2016 09:19

My 3 y old dd is a selfie queen. She had one of those kiddizoom cameras with a front and back lens and is always taking photos of herself (and the floor, ceiling, walls, her feet...)

5 y old ds has the older version of the same camera. He is the selfie king.

I don't think that T-shirt is inappropriate at all tbh. It just reflects the current trend of taking photos of yourself.

VestalVirgin · 10/05/2016 09:21

I owned a bright pink shirt with no slogan at all when I was a child. It did not harm me in any way. Pink is a pretty, neutral colour.

Certainly better than sexist slogans, taken on its own.

WeDoNotSow · 10/05/2016 09:24

It isn't sexist.
It may be indicative of the patriarchal set up of our society (which harms both boys and girls) but it isn't sexist, in and of itself.

witsender · 10/05/2016 09:25

I don't buy slogan or character tees full stop, this one is cringe worthy.

VestalVirgin · 10/05/2016 09:25

No, it makes an identity out of this trend.

Of course kids like to play with cameras. But why would you feel the need to buy them a t-shirt with such a slogan?

My parents didn't buy me a shirt with "Botanics Professor" on it when I got interested in plants at age 8.

Nor did they buy a t-shirt with the slogan "Beauty Queen" when I started to wear miniskirts at age 7, come to think about it.

I know exactly which of those t-shirts they could have actually bought without specifically requesting the slogan, and will be forever grateful that they did not.

VestalVirgin · 10/05/2016 09:26

How can it be indicative of patriarchy and not sexist itself?

CheesecakeWarrior · 10/05/2016 09:27

Not inappropriate. Bit naff. Fine if you don't like it. Cannot see why you would think inappropriate though

NeedACleverNN · 10/05/2016 09:29

I like it

RiverTam · 10/05/2016 09:30

It's not inappropriate, but it is symptomatic of the narcissistic world we now live in and are bringing up our children in. It's all about meeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

LoveFromUs · 10/05/2016 09:32

I wouldn't say it's inappropriate but on the other hand I wouldn't put it on a child!

BathshebaDarkstone · 10/05/2016 09:39

As I practically live in Sainsbury's, I know they have 3 age ranges for kids, 0-2, 1-5 and 3-12. I'm guessing this was in the 3-12 range. If you want Peppa Pig, buy from the 1-5 range. Hmm

Idliketobeabutterfly · 10/05/2016 09:41

Lol I thought it was going to rude. Tbh as other said it is naff.

BathshebaDarkstone · 10/05/2016 09:45

Thumb could your DS teach me how to use the camera on my tablet please? Blush

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/05/2016 09:50

Oh dear Bath - not sure he'd be able to explain it very well, he's only 3! Grin
