Should Disney have a same sex couple?

Just getting views.

This is something I feel like Disney movies should have.

Being in a same sex couple is nothing to hide from children.

They can take the hit

But why would they? Also 'they' would be shareholders including, for example pension funds who are accountable for making the best returns for their clients. Big industry doesn't do things because they are a good thing to do, they do things to make money. If you are lucky they may make money by doing good.

FutureGadgetsLab · 10/05/2016 10:12

Blae which is extremely immoral and doesn't mean it is okay.

SpookyRachel · 10/05/2016 10:12

Why on earth should heterosexual people not be able to relate to gay people? Gay people grow up having to relate to heterosexual role models all the time. Do you think children should have separate books and films according to their ethnicity or sexuality? Or could it be an option to show a rich diversity of human life and let children relate to it all?

FutureGadgetsLab · 10/05/2016 10:15

Exactly Rachel. Apparently straight people should have the monopoly on representation Hmm

Randomposter · 10/05/2016 10:15

They'll never do it. Homosexuality isn't mainstream enough & still attracts a lot of criticism - plus the film wouldn't make enough money which is the clincher.

SpookyRachel · 10/05/2016 10:16

And, frankly, people who think there is something 'complicated' about homosexuality, meaning it can only be 'explained' to older children so as not to 'confuse' them, need to do some work on their homophobia. Bottom line, it's only more complicated than heterosexuality if you see it as some kind of deviant state.

SpookyRachel · 10/05/2016 10:17

They will do it. If we can have a black US president, and a Muslim mayor, we can have a lesbian Disney heroine. It's just a question of when Smile

blaeberry · 10/05/2016 10:23

Of course market forces have no morality. I am not saying it is right, I am saying how it is. You just need to look at the conditions and pay of the people producing the merchandise to see that.

FutureGadgetsLab · 10/05/2016 10:24

Blae so here's an idea, certain companies should be pressured to act morally and got out of pure capitalist greed.

blaeberry · 10/05/2016 10:28

certain companies? Surely we want to make all companies operating in (for us) the uk have to take morality into consideration? If you only require certain companies to abide by this then other (immoral?) companies have an advantage.

FutureGadgetsLab · 10/05/2016 10:31

I meant large influential companies are a good starting point.

Randomposter · 10/05/2016 10:33

But who would want a lesbian heroine? Only Lesbians I'd imagine. & Disney aren't going to invest millions in a film that only appeals to a minority group.

FutureGadgetsLab · 10/05/2016 10:34

I'd want a lesbian heroine. I'm not a lesbian.

It's not only lesbians who want diversity.

lulucappuccino · 10/05/2016 10:48

Random, I would like to see a lesbian heroine, and I'm not a lesbian. Your logic is skewed.

Randomposter · 10/05/2016 10:52

I'm just trying to see it from a film producers point of view, I personally couldn't give a toss what the hero/heroine was, I hate all Disney films. But films have to appeal to the masses, which is why I can only think of one gay film & that was about 10 years ago.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/05/2016 11:17

There probably have been gay (or asexual) royals in the past - they just knew they had to do their duty, get married and have children (and maybe take a lover on the side). Even nowadays I think it would be very unlikely for a royal actually close to the line of succession to come out as gay.

So actually, forcing a prince/princess to marry heterosexually is probably more 'accurate' than showing them in a gay relationship...

For that reason it would be easier to do it with non-royals I think.

Claraoswald36 · 10/05/2016 11:44

If British media is anything to go by then gay couples will be missed out and Disney will go straight to the trans agenda. And I will add them to the list of things I won't engage in again with grazia and glamour and all the other fawning entities.

Meanwhile this thread was quite thought provoking and I think my standpoint is no romantic relationship requirement for either gender character. Coupling up at the end is a bit outdated now Grin

minipie · 10/05/2016 12:07

Completely agree. I'd like to see stories that end in something other than a marriage (gay or straight). Luckily I think Disney is already going this way.

Insofar as there are paired up couples who form parts of the story, then yes, ideally there should be a proportion of gay couples as well as straight couples. (Just as there should be a proportion of black/Asian characters and a proportion of disabled characters). But the film does not need to be about the coupling up.

VashtaNerada · 10/05/2016 12:10

I'd also like a lesbian character in a Disney film and I'm not lesbian. I'm Shock at the idea that people only want to see people exactly like themselves represented.
And all companies have moral obligations IMO - whether they realise it or not!

Winterbiscuit · 10/05/2016 12:13

It's not only lesbians who want diversity.

Yes I agree.

WeatherwaxOrOgg · 10/05/2016 12:21

I agree entirely with you Afro :)

Remember that people who think this is fine are allowed to have an opinion, whereas because you're not picking the pc path, you'll be automatically made to feel bad. This is how pc works.

As a Christian, I don't agree with it at all and wouldn't watch it - there're plenty who agree with this viewpoint but just know that it's unacceptable to voice it.

I'm not forcing my opinion on anyone else, not even my children, although they hear my views obviously. They can make their own choices later on. Some are grown up and do and some aren't and don't. All appear to be pretty balanced and undamaged by my beliefs, whether they hold them too or not.

I feel that as homosexuality is more and more acceptable, there will of course eventually be a same sex Disney couple, it's inevitable, just as blasphemy is now commonplace in childrens films. I just wouldn't choose to watch a film like this, or take my children to see it.

Writerwannabe83 · 10/05/2016 12:33

I just can't see it happening for some reason.

FutureGadgetsLab · 10/05/2016 13:12

Why don't you agree with it? Why does your religion mean homosexuals should not be represented?

Your religion is private. Why should it affect anyone else? Why would you not take your children to see it just because you do not like it?

VashtaNerada · 10/05/2016 13:27

There are many LGBT Christians Weatherwax, and many Christians who fully support their LGBT friends. I don't think your religion is the reason for your views tbh.
