To ask if it's a good thing that London has a Muslim mayor

DoesFlossfloss · 06/05/2016 21:17

Because my London based in-laws are not happy and I've not been following the campaign as I'm not in London so don't really care. However, we're seeing PILs this weekend and it will be up for discussion.

Where are the areas where police officers are afraid for their lives?

Again, more hyperbole but let's ignore "afraid for their lives"

LookJustCancelTheCheque · 09/05/2016 16:44

MrSnow, can you drop the snark please? I don't per se mind being called (or insinuated as) thick, but I would really like to get to the bottom of this.

By 'ideology' do you mean an ideology Sadiq Khan holds? What ideology is this? Can you show me some evidence for this?

I may well be asking stupid questions; again, I don't mind being told so. But I really would like an answer so I can understand you and continue the debate.

MrSnow · 09/05/2016 16:44

I'm popping off, got to prepare myself mentally for the commute.

Will check back in later.

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/05/2016 16:46

When you're quoting people it's helpful if you use quotation marks. Or italicise their text. Or anything really.

MrSnow · 09/05/2016 16:46

LookJustCancelTheCheque

I don't for one second think you're thick. islam is an ideology. "A system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy".

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 09/05/2016 16:49

you just cant compare the many vile practices in Saudi Arabia (and boy there are sooo many) to a man that was born and bred in London, and became a human rights lawyer! I went to Uni with guys like him - you cant blame him because you don't like his religion

MrSnow · 09/05/2016 16:52

you just cant compare the many vile practices in Saudi Arabia

Saudi is the birthplace and protectorate of islam.

LookJustCancelTheCheque · 09/05/2016 16:52

islam is an ideology

OK then.

Please can you explain how that is relevant to Sadiq Khan and his position as Mayor of London?

ghostyslovesheep · 09/05/2016 16:55

god Mr Snow is trying so hard to edumcate us all with his enigmatic ponderings and what if's and dismissive attitude to anyone who disagrees - it's so going to change my world view

MrSnow · 09/05/2016 16:57

"Please can you explain how that is relevant to Sadiq Khan and his position as Mayor of London"

It's relevant for me not to trust him until he proves he's trustworthy. I reserve the right to keep an eye on his actions, especially given his previous choices of company and his dealings with CAGE.

MrSnow · 09/05/2016 16:58

Right, I'm late, TTFN.

BertrandRussell · 09/05/2016 16:59

OK. A couple of people have expressed concern about what might happen under Khan's mayorship. Please will one of them tell me what specifically they are worried might happen?

RedToothBrush · 09/05/2016 17:00

A little game here:

Can we spot how many different techniques MrSnow has used in this thread.

Which is why I REALLY can't take a word he says seriously. And why I find what he (and indeed his hero MrTrump) as dangerous as any other extremist. You can't challenge it. Just show it up for what it is.

And ridicule and laugh at it.

LookJustCancelTheCheque · 09/05/2016 17:00

MrSnow, I do feel we're starting to get somewhere but boy, are you making us work for it.

Perhaps it makes you feel powerful.

Lweji · 09/05/2016 17:00

It's relevant for me not to trust him until he proves he's trustworthy.

Because this is the very first time he's been in the public eye in any official capacity?

LookJustCancelTheCheque · 09/05/2016 17:01

Bertram, I've been asking for specifics too. To no avail so far, but I feel that given enough chicken entrails and/or willing sacrificial virgins, MrSnow might just grace us with his/her specific worries/wisdom at some point.

I live in hope, anyway.

JacquesHammer · 09/05/2016 17:03

It's a great example of the difference between London and much of the rest of the country

Well quite. We've had a number of Muslim Lord Mayors since the mid-1980s so rather marvellous to see the capital catching up Wink

I'm pleased he won. The better man for the job and I look forward to seeing how he fulfils the role

RedToothBrush · 09/05/2016 17:09

Capitalism is an ideology.

So is socialism.

PausingFlatly · 09/05/2016 17:11

I reserve the right to keep an eye on ALL politicians' actions. If you were planning to NOT keep an eye had Zac got in, more fool you.

They're politicians, for heaven's sake! It's our public duty to keep an eye.

I'll judge Khan as I judge every other Mayor: on what he does.

oliviaclottedcream · 09/05/2016 17:18

Seen as the last Muslim mayor in London (In my neighbouring borough of Tower Hamlets) was Letfur Rahman. It isn't all that surprising that Londoners have been reluctant to 'catch up'.

BertrandRussell · 09/05/2016 17:19

Well of course you keep an eye on politicians. Holding them to account is part of the democratic process. What are you looking out for in particular with Khan?

Lweji · 09/05/2016 17:19

But the last non-Muslim Mayor of London was Boris...

RedToothBrush · 09/05/2016 17:23

Because the last Christain mayor was a bad one, we should not give another one a chance.
Because the last female mayor was a bad one, we should not give another one a chance
Because the last gay mayor was a bad one, we should not give another one a chance
Because the last jewish mayor was a bad one, we should not give another one a chance

BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL THE SAME.

Ah yes.

prettybird · 09/05/2016 17:47

MrSnow tries to echo Trump's ridiculed statement that there are "No-go" areas in London for the Met: the one about which the Met had to issue a statement, saying that ""We would not normally dignify such comments with a response, however on this occasion we think it's important to state to Londoners that Mr Trump could not be more wrong.
"Any candidate for the presidential election in the United States of America is welcome to receive a briefing from the Met Police on the reality of policing London." Hmm

Boris and Cameron were equally scathing BBC reeport here

NeverEverAnythingEver · 09/05/2016 17:52

I remember that Trump nonsense. It's ridiculous.

What happens when someone tries to echo smelly hot air?
