To ask if it's a good thing that London has a Muslim mayor

DoesFlossfloss · 06/05/2016 21:17

Because my London based in-laws are not happy and I've not been following the campaign as I'm not in London so don't really care. However, we're seeing PILs this weekend and it will be up for discussion.

Goady to ask a question. Hmm This place is becoming a fucking bore.

Akire · 06/05/2016 21:41

I think it's going to be just fine. I don't think it make huge difference in what policies he agrees or not BUT I think it does show London is very mixed and diverse city and its not just the likes of Ken and Boris who can make it.

With all the Isis crap across Europe by headcases who say they are following Islam it can only be good that london mayor stands up and says he follows the faith and they are wrong. If anything he probable make him more of target. So good luck to him if he makes other Muslims feel slightly less hated by bigets it's good thing.

I'd rather have someone who can actually do the job unlike Boris Johnson who is a bit of a twit... Biscuit

This is lGBBO 2015 all over again.

Capricorn76 · 06/05/2016 21:45

Yes the up until very recently nom-dom billionaire who clearly didn't even really want the job but went for it because he was born to rule would've been much better for ordinary Londoner's.

RoboticSealpup · 06/05/2016 21:45

Yes it is. The government is alienating young muslims in schools with their 'anti-extremism' strategies. Having a muslim mayor of London could be a positive thing for muslim Londoners who don't feel represented in public life and are constantly picked on about terrorism and fantasies about Sharia law.

For the record, I'm a white protestant European and, I also feel that Sadiq Khan represents me and my interests.

Scarydinosaurs · 06/05/2016 21:47

He is so much more than a Muslim.

People are not defined by their religious beliefs. To reduce him to a 'Muslim' is unhelpful and divisive.

AugustaFinkNottle · 06/05/2016 21:48

his religion might influence some decisions?

probably those which affect women. but lets ignore that

Well, yes, unless you have any evidence whatsoever to suggest otherwise. Despite the Tory press doing its utmost to smear him, they seem not to have found any such evidence.

kateemo · 06/05/2016 21:49

It's been three hours since the announcement and already paranoia finds a voice? Tell your PILs to enjoy their Biscuit dear and welcome to 2016.

OvertiredandConfused · 06/05/2016 21:49

I don"t like him and don't think he'll be a good Mayor. One of the things that DOESN'T bother me at all is the fact that he's a Muslim. It's irrelevant.

TreaterAnita · 06/05/2016 21:50

A mayor who isn't Zac Goldsmith is a good result. I heard an interview with him last week and he kept on vaguely including in his spiel "Islamic extremists" and "anti-Semites" and whenever the interviewer said "are you saying Sadiq Khan is an Islamic extremist?" or "are you saying Sadiq Khan is an anti-Semite?" Goldsmith in a dishonest and weaselly way would say "I'm not saying he's an Islamic extremist/anti-Semite but, well, ...".

This. Zac Goldsmith appeared to assume that the job was his of right and when the electorate saw him for the entitled and disengaged twit that he is, he didn't hesitate to get his hands dirty with blantant islamophobia whilst simultaneously trying to slur Sadiq Khan as antisemitic. Most people would be better than him, but actually SK was an excellent human rights lawyer and a good shadow justice secretary in very trying circumstances. I'm not in London but him being elected has cheered me up no end.

Hassled · 06/05/2016 21:51

A mayor who isn't Zac Goldsmith is a good result. - absolutely. And Khan seems like a really good guy. And yes I know it should be no more relevant than if he were Protestant, but the fact is that the more people see that Muslims are just as likely to be good guys as non-Muslims, the better. There's this fear of the unknown - having a Muslim mayor will hopefully remove that.

Akire · 06/05/2016 21:51

To be fair it's a question be in every report, paper, interview for days.... If we are all still alive by the time they offi ally announce it

Ricardian · 06/05/2016 21:52

he didn't hesitate to get his hands dirty with blantant islamophobia

Be fair, it wasn't just Islamophobia: he had a whole chromatic scale of racist dogwhistles. I was half waiting for "I can't be racist, my sister's slept with a Pakistani man", to match Ken, who actually did claim that he couldn't be anti-Semitic as he'd slept with Jewish women.

herethereandeverywhere · 06/05/2016 21:53

I voted for him. I didn't give his religion a second thought. Just like I didn't give the religion of any of the other candidates a second thought.

Though I'm not sure I could ever vote Tory I have gone from quite respect of Goldsmith (like his eco credentials and previously been good on 'local' issues) his mayoral campaign has been dreadful. Backfiring soundbite after backfiring soundbite. It's made him look like cream = rich and thick.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 06/05/2016 21:55

No President, it's goady to pose an ill thought out question, and then respond in an obtuse way when someone replies.

StepAwayFromTheThesaurus · 06/05/2016 21:55

It hadn't even occurred to me that he was a Muslim until people started being stupid about it in the Internet. By that I mean, I genuinely have never given any thought to it because I don't care about politicians' religions.

jay55 · 06/05/2016 21:55

Most londoners have more in common with Sadiq than Zac Goldsmith.

Andcake · 06/05/2016 21:59

I am really proud of London for basically not giving a shit he's a Muslim...older people can have a tendency to be more racist

I'm very happy Sadiq Khan is Mayor. London needs a Labour mayor right now.

HisNameWasPrinceAndHeWasFunky · 06/05/2016 22:00

Zadiq is Muslim?

I don't care about that anymore than I cared Ken Livingstone was a ???? And Boris was a ????? (Insert their religion as I don't have a clue).

squoosh · 06/05/2016 22:01

Goldsmith's campaign (or Lynton Crosby's campaign) was jaw droppingly awful in its racist scaremongering. Even Zac Goldsmith's sister has criticised it. Delighted he got a drubbing.

HisNameWasPrinceAndHeWasFunky · 06/05/2016 22:03

Goldsmith's campaign ad actually claimed that the Govt wouldn't work with a non-Tory London mayor! Shock. As a reason to vote for him Shock. No one came out of that claim covered in glory.
