To think the UK is just a bit crap?

Right don't get me wrong - I love being British and am super proud of being British. But having moved back recently, I just can't escape the feeling that everything's a bit... I don't know, nothing TERRIBLE, just a bit... well, crap? I don't know what it is exactly, but there's just a certain grimmness that I just can't put my finger on. Am I imagining it? Is it just re-entry shock?

My dh is from the UK and when we used to visit it compounded how glad he was to leave.

But then, he is from a pretty shit area that I wouldn't live in if you paid me.

I love London. And the Lake District is beautiful.

I'd happily live in Midsomer except it's fictitious Sad

FutureGadgetsLab · 06/05/2016 20:34

I like bits of it but other bits are shit. Like most places.

Brainnotbrawn · 06/05/2016 20:35

YAB totally unreasonable and I say that as a person from a country who has spent the last 800 years being oppressed by you Grin. The U.K. Is fantastic, I loved living there. Ironically I did find it still very traditional which coming from Ireland was saying a lot.

MiddleClassProblem · 06/05/2016 20:35

Surely midsomer is the last place anyone would want to live? How could you sleep at night?

FutureGadgetsLab · 06/05/2016 20:35

whats wrong with the weather??

You can't guarantee it. If you could guarantee an 80% chance of sun for the summer or something it'd be fine. But it's so tempremental.

SlinkyVagabond · 06/05/2016 20:36

Everywhere has got something shit about it, US has guns and gangs, Australia has big scary spiders and bush fires, etc, etc. But on a perfect day, on a hill in Yorkshire (for example) with butterflies fluttering and a sky lark overhead, no where in the world beats it. But the same can be said of a little harbour in France, a snow covered mountain in Austria, a fall forest in New England. The world is full of beauty (and some crappyness. )Hey ho, never look back op, that way lies unhappiness.

Ifiwasabadger · 06/05/2016 20:40

Vardy I never usually moan about the uk as the topic never comes up in my day to day life, but the OP did ask, and I do love AIBU!

readytorage · 06/05/2016 20:44

Pack your bags and head to Syria then Wink yab a bit u.

You could be living in countries that are far worse

Originalfoogirl · 06/05/2016 20:45

I love the UK.

But then, I live in Scotland, which we all know is the best bit 😂.

pratiaalba · 06/05/2016 20:47

Everything about Britain is tame- the weather, the landscape, the politics.
That's why lots of people thinks it's mediocre, when in fact it's just mild.
Things are a little overstretched at present, but I'm sure it will be fine in 10-15 years time.

MiddleClassProblem · 06/05/2016 20:48

Best bit of you like long johns Wink

Fratelli · 06/05/2016 20:49

As a woman there are not many other places I would want to live. I also feel like we do have a lot of options and opportunities that people in other countries may not get. The grass can seem greener at times though.

Madbengalmum · 06/05/2016 20:49

Why do these people come back to the uk if it is so crap?
Why not just get another job somewhere else and slag the uk off?

BeALert · 06/05/2016 20:50

I know what you mean OP. Whenever I go back to the UK - doesn't matter which bit - loads of things about it just seem a bit crap.

But then you've got M&S food halls, Waitrose, country pubs, sausages, black pudding, the BBC... there are definitely wonderful things about the UK.

Ankleswingers · 06/05/2016 20:51

Love where I am now. Moved away from London seven years ago ( was born and bread there) .

Fuck me am I glad, as is DH , that we moved away. Best thing we ever did.

BillBrysonsBeard · 06/05/2016 20:51

I loved living abroad, it was such an adventure and felt exciting... It was fantastic. But there's no place like home and coming back to the UK was the right decision. Yes it can sometimes be grey and rainy, tax is high and we have the daily fail but it's awesome. I lived somewhere where the warm weather is guaranteed so you'd think "great I can always make plans and not get rained off" Well even that gets annoying, endless heat! Sometimes you have to try living abroad to really appreciate where you're from. Now I love visiting different places but can't wait to get home.. to beautiful Yorkshire. 💜

moussakka · 06/05/2016 20:51

Of course there are countries that could be worse :) I love the UK! I moved from Germany, and I suppose I'm wondering more, does everyone just get re-entry shock..? Where I am just feels less.... ambitious and upbeat... less international / cosmopolitan... but then could just be that it's different when you're somewhere new in your own country. Feel I've been a bit controversial ;)

SlinkyVagabond Everywhere does have amazing bits and crap bits - except NZ 😊 NZ is paradise.

Skiptonlass · 06/05/2016 20:54

Well, wrong side of the Pennines, that's your problem 😁

But seriously... I live abroad and I miss the uk dreadfully. I miss my parents, I miss the humour, I miss halfway decent telly, the concept of queuing, decent tea, Yorkshire puddings, Proper Rain and so many other things. I don't miss single glazing, cold houses and massive ruddy house spiders though.

Munich is a great city. Did you want to move back? If you didn't, that can manifest in not liking where you are.

I miss home. If Brexit goes ahead I'll cry, because Dh won't be able to live in the uk so I can never come back (weep.)

Skiptonlass · 06/05/2016 20:55

hic draconis

Yes, NZ is wonderful. Lived there for a while and adored it.

PacificDogwod · 06/05/2016 20:55

I know what you mean to.

I've lived in the UK (well, Scotland) for 23 years, moved from Germany (not Munich - Munich is gorgeous and full of very well off people. I am not sure that it is representative of life in Germany in general).

I love the UK and consider myself 'at home' here - I go to visit my folks, rather 'going home'.

But I do know what you mean. I think it might be to do with a certain, I dunno, lack of care by some people? for themselves and for their immediate environment? Lots of littering, dog poo everywhere, people swearing or just being loud and crude to each other in public - that kind of thing?
Gawd, I sound like a right uptight prude, don't I?

I find going to Germany that everybody moans about everything all of the time Grin.
But the weather IS better in that it is more predictable and more likely to have some proper seasons!

BillBrysonsBeard · 06/05/2016 20:56

^^ I met loads of teachers from
NZ while I was in the Middle East, who wouldn't move back.. They felt safer than back home. They said it was beautiful but crime was terrible. I would love to go though.

Glittershoes22 · 06/05/2016 20:57

Its all about attitude you look for the crap, you see the crap, you look for the good, you see the good. Nothing a good attitude adjustment wouldn't sort!

PacificDogwod · 06/05/2016 20:57

And yes, the UK is insular, for obvious reasons.
Which is part of its charm and part of what makes it 'other' IMO.

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 06/05/2016 21:00

er no,i don't think you've been 'controversial' at all

just whingey
