That people shouldn't bring dogs to the school gates

I try to teach my children not to touch strange dogs and on the school run there seems to be a constant influx of parents with dogs in particular jumpy dogs around the school gates. These can sometimes be excitable and the owner often says they are ok. Abiu to think the school should stop dogs around the school gates. I always have a fear after witnessing my primary school friend get viciously attacked by a dog she stroked at the school gates.

I agree. As a dog owner. I think it is a recipes for disaster.

YANBU. I think it's just so unnecessary to bring dogs along at such a busy time like the school run! Loads of people around, yeah let's all bring our dogs along. Surely there are other times in the day to walk the dog?

As a dog owner, I agree as well. In our school they tend to be people with smaller breeds. Not sure how they would like it if I tied up my two giants to the school gate

Not only due to the risk of them biting a child, but we all know dog shit can cause blindness.

There is not much the schools can do if the dogs are outside the school gates. We also have dogs left outside school gate at our school and I don't see it as a problem personally but I see your point. What can the school do about it?

Unless the dogs are uncontrollably lunging at your children, YABU.

Just tell your children not to approach strange dogs, even if the owner says it's okay.

Yabu to think that the school has any right to tell parents what to do outside of their grounds.

If the dogs are on leads and the owners are considerate, then it's fine. If owners are being inconsiderate then that's a separate problem, but if it's outside the school gates then it's for parents to deal with, not the school.

We always liked seeing other dogs in the school run, and my dc used to be delighted on the occasions when I brought their dog to pick them up. Peoples (irrational but understandable) fears should not dictate what harmless things other people can do.

I often take the dog to school-it's a good hours walk. However dd is in year 6 so I don't often take him to the school gate.

I just think it's not a place for a dog to be around small children at busy time. As can't wait said there's other times of the dog to walk the dog. Plus why stand there at the gates. I've witnessed dogs been tied to the fence and left unattended when they go and pick up their child. It was pretty horrific as a primary school child to witness a dog brutally attack a little girls face. She had scars all over her face where she was attacked. I had a dog myself but I would never bring it on a school run.

There's a daily lineup of dogs at my kids' school, we love it. They're tied up so easily avoided.

I don't know really. At DS's school there's usually a parent there with her dog outside the gates. DD (3) looks forward to seeing this doggy every morning. I've taught both of my children to never approach a dog without asking it's owner first. So each morning DD goes up to the same woman and asks if she can stroke the doggy. The answer is always yes and it really makes her morning! On the other hand, there's also a parent that leaves their dog tied up on the railings and that makes me uncomfortable. Dog seems very friendly but I don't like seeing children crowding round an unsupervised dog.

Yanbu. I'm a dog owner and frequently walk my retriever straight after the school run but luckily we have a car park next to school so I can leave her in the car and go and get her afterwards. A few other people leave their dogs tied up while they take their children in and the poor animals go crazy, barking and straining at the leash. Not nice for the dogs or the small children having to walk past them.

At our school parents leave the dogs tied up to the railings inside the school gates.

I agree completely, dogs do not belong outside a school gate, regardless of size,breed,temperament.

Following the incident at my primary school dogs were banned from the gates due to health and safety of the children obviously given the incident that occurred the children's welfare was paramount over the dog being exercised.

I'm thinking of my DC school where the entrance is a single person path into the playground. If you meet a buggy on it you have to reverse back up because there is just no room to pass. People do tie up their dogs at the end and tbh its a nightmare because there is no avoiding them. They walk across to the other side of the path and their leads block the path so you have to climb over it. Again, nightmare with a gaggle of kids or a pram.

For a lot of people, though, there are not 'plenty of other times in the day to walk a dog'. What a weird assumption.

People are probably trying to do the right thing by walking their children to school, rather than jumping in the car and adding to traffic congestion. Of course they want to maximise their time by exercising the dog too.

If individual owners aren't controlling they'd dogs, it's a different matter.

Yabu! I take my German Shepard on the school run most mornings, on his lead, not tied up, with me all the time.
He wouldn't mess in concrete, wouldn't hurt a fly, and the 15 min walk to and 15 min back from school is the only time j have to walk him b4 work, all the kids love to fuss him

YANBU. Our school now has restricted access due to building works and the dog walkers now congregate around a small alleyway entry - that we all have to squeeze through - it boils my piss. Move your dogs out of the way so that we can access the school.

How is it a weird assumption?

Our Head Teacher has asked and asked and asked people to stop bringing their dogs to the gates but they won't. It's very frustrating as the gates are quite small and so you end up avoiding the dogs and all jumbling in together.
