To be disappointed that Kate Middleton has posed for Vogue cover

I'm ambivalent to the Royal Family but like the way Kate has taken a relatively low key approach since marrying William. I think it's a shame she's decided to pose for Vogue. Liz Jones writes:

'But here is my important problem. You only grace the cover of Vogue when you want to become an icon and have your ego massaged. You are joining the fashion elite.

Like Diana, who wanted to be a mother, a Princess, a charity worker, an everywoman, a pin-up, Kate has sold her soul to the devil that is vanity and elitism, and those fashionistas who judge others only by their BMI.

Kate, who up to now has protected her privacy and that of her children ferociously, has opened the floodgates to the sort of forensic scrutiny her late mother-in-law endured'.

But the Royal Family only survive because of the sycophancy (which is exactly the word that sprung to mind when I saw that she was on the Vogue cover). You can't really blame her for the fact that other people still fawn over a family that is only there by birth.

Ultimately she and William are probably a nice, bland Sloaney couple. Not a patch on the Obamas for intelligence and inspiration though - and the difference was brought into stark contrast for me today when the very bland pictures of Kate were juxtaposed with stories of Malia Obama getting into Harvard!

Sproutieboolaa · 02/05/2016 01:25

KM is all over the press in photos the whole time and everyone bangs on about what she's got on. So 'Vogue' seems perfect to me. I don't care much about royals but I met her recently and she was exceptionally nice, though it wasn't particularly required. I was quite impressed.

EverySongbirdSays · 02/05/2016 01:29

Harvard is an institution which accepts only 5% of its applicants yearly. If you think Malia's surname wasn't a huge assist in receiving her acceptance letter you're quite wrong.

Kate also got into one of the best universities in the world and her Dad wasn't the Prime Minister at the time. Not like for like scenarios at all.

Agree the pictures are rather bland. In many ways we haven't the first idea of how intelligent the woman is so it's a bit bizarre to criticize that.

andintothefire · 02/05/2016 01:36

You can't really compare the St Andrews history of art course to Harvard.. and if names are such an assistance then why didn't William get into a better university? Wink

Not really the point of this thread so don't want to derail it, but I don't think even the most fervent royalists are going to claim they are a particularly intellectual family. I was just making the point that the achievements of the first family of the US do make our lot look a little bit underachieving..

No doubt. But Papa Obama got to legitimately put Harvard on the CV. The royals can't compare.

not just any course at harvard. it was harvard law school, which is one of their most competitive programs.

chilipepper20 · 02/05/2016 01:41

why shouldn't she be on the cover?

Vogue wins. She wins.

there is this idea she above all this worldly stuff. that's just comical.

EverySongbirdSays · 02/05/2016 01:44

Given that Prince Charles got in to fucking Cambridge with 2 E's to his name, I don't doubt that William could've gone wherever he chose.

"History of Art Course" like it's a City and Guilds at the local higher ed where people resit GCSE's. Hmm

She has an MA from a respected institution from a place she earned there

andintothefire · 02/05/2016 01:47

Fortunately we are now a bit more meritocratic (at least in terms of higher education) than we were in the 70s! Williams would have been eaten alive had he gone to Oxford or Cambridge with his A levels.

BoogieTime · 02/05/2016 01:48

Yes, she's a smoker EverySongbird. There are quite a few pap photos of her smoking, but the British press chose not to publish them. You can usually find them online with a bit of clever searching.

EverySongbirdSays · 02/05/2016 01:53

I just tried looking Boogie got nowhere - just references to it. I think it humanises her massively. As an ex smoker who smoked for 14 years I feel like I understand her in new ways Grin

Totally agree with this actually - a bit more personality would be a very good thing!

notonyurjellybellynelly · 02/05/2016 03:04

Boogie how about you show us the pictures that indicwte she's a smoker.

Or are they difficult to find because they don't exist.

notonyurjellybellynelly · 02/05/2016 03:12

I did not recognise her in the hat

Neither did I.

As for her being a doors to manual type commoner. WTAF?

EverySongbirdSays · 02/05/2016 03:16

"doors to manual type commoner"

is a crass reference to her mothers career as a air stewardess

The DM wrote several articles at one time claiming that Williams posher friends called Kate "doors to manual" behind her back. I have always thought this was a load of old shit they invented themselves. Truly UC people wouldn't have given a fuck to even enquire what her mother may have done prior to marriage.

I mean Diana was a nursery nurse for crying out loud.

Sproutieboolaa · 02/05/2016 03:58

There's no reason to believe that anything in the DM is true.

Givemecoffeeplease · 02/05/2016 06:52

The outfit on the cover is Burberry - a v British brand. Hat is vintage from Beyond Retro. Eyebrows are heavier as the makeup artist wanted to emphasise them - very Cara.

It's all a bit "yawn" to me, but it will sell hugely overseas as well as at home. Vogue is in the business of making money after all, and they need this centenary issue to be their biggest ever seller as its such a big deal to them.

Sproutieboolaa · 02/05/2016 07:39

I will buy it for my coffee table. I don't live in the UK and I know everyone who comes round will rush to leaf through. KM is good PR abroad, but I haven't done the maths regarding whether it's all worth the cost. Still, I'd rather they lived in Ken Pal than some billionaire from China tbh. Dunno why really.

Julia2016 · 02/05/2016 07:42

I don't understand the criticism of her mother. The woman is self made and worked hard. This is the reason I find it difficult to admire km in any way, she's the complete opposite.

Julia2016 · 02/05/2016 07:44

Someone said Kensington palace is open to the public, what do the public see?

cakeycakeface · 02/05/2016 08:00

Who is Liz Jones?

GoblinLittleOwl · 02/05/2016 08:01

It is a special edition, I believe, to celebrate 100 years of Vogue.
Liz Jones, on the other hand, is a waste of space as she rarely has anything intelligent to say.

SamanthaBrique · 02/05/2016 08:09

cakey, Liz Jones is a Daily Mail rentagob, although she was once editor of Marie Claire so she does know fashion. Kate's cover seems more suited to Tatler than Vogue, if I'm honest. It's very Girls in Pearls.

daisychain01 · 02/05/2016 08:18

Kate, who up to now has protected her privacy and that of her children ferociously, has opened the floodgates to the sort of forensic scrutiny her late mother-in-law endured'.

Everyone knows that Diana played the press like a cat plays with a mouse, it's rewriting history to say she "endured the scrutiny". She used them to her own advantage and got her fingers burned.

DoesFlossfloss · 02/05/2016 08:36

But in the beginning, when Diana was a young mum, she was hounded mercilessly by the Press.. It was only as she got older and started playing mind games with cheating Charles that she sought out the Press. That's why I've been sympathetic to William & Kate's wish for a quiet family life in Norfolk whilst their children are young. And why it seems so odd that Kate would chose the exposure of a Vogue cover.

OP posts:
Cerseirys · 02/05/2016 08:46

I think Diana had no choice but to be manipulative with the press after a while. It was a case of either kill or be killed.
