To pronounce it as "ket-chp" not "ketch-up"

My DH thinks that I pronounce it incorrectly.

Do you say "ket-chp" all one word, the end syllable pronounced quickly and sounding a bit like a Northern "up" (oop), or do you say "ketch-up", with the end syllable almost separate and sounding like a Southern "up" and the whole word sounding a bit like "catch up"??

Ketchup

eeyorestails · 29/04/2016 18:12

Which just thinking about it is an odd word, it doesn't roll off the tongue and is spelt strangely I wonder how it became to be

isseywithcats · 29/04/2016 18:13

red sauce here but if i say the proper word its ketchup one word but no northern oop

FruStefanOla · 29/04/2016 18:18

DP and I are both Londoners - but we don't have Laandaan accents, just neutral RP.

I say ketch-up (as in 'southern' pronunciation of 'up')
DP says catch-up (he was brought up in Canada)

HTH Grin

Tomato sauce is what you make to have with pasta, with basil or chilli etc....

Never heard ketchup being called that?

treaclesoda · 29/04/2016 18:21

I call it red sauce, never use the word ketchup.

But I'm saying it in my head and if I was saying it I would say it with two syllables, ketch-up. Smile

greybead · 29/04/2016 18:22

Ketch - up
Like the spelling Confused

treaclesoda · 29/04/2016 18:23

Mrsmugoo round where I live, what you're describing would probably be known as 'pasta sauce' Grin Tomato sauce or red sauce would be ketchup, but I've never heard anyone call it ketchup in real life (apart from on TV). Smile

SwedishEdith · 29/04/2016 18:24

ketch-up - but northern up, definitely not oop.

DaisyAdair · 29/04/2016 18:25

Exactly what treaclesoda said.

Shinyshoes2 · 29/04/2016 18:25

Ketch up

MeanwhileHighAboveTheField · 29/04/2016 18:26

We say cat poo

A leftover from dc's toddlerhoood...

Eveninties · 29/04/2016 18:27

If I was to say it though I'd say ketchip.

eeyorestails · 29/04/2016 18:27

Makes me think my grandad used to say red sauce so presumably that's what my mum used to say, I wonder if she stopped saying it like myself as when it's even close to called red sauce, my dad always goes on about it and makes a joke about passing the blood...which gets a bit annoying if you hear it more than once

YesterdayOnceMore · 29/04/2016 18:30

I think I might have to start saying tomato sauce instead!!

I also have problems with the word Latte having read about it on MN. I had to change my coffee order since I read that and became unsure about the pronoucination!

OP posts:
GoofyIsACow · 29/04/2016 18:34

Lattay easy... No 'R'

Eveninties · 29/04/2016 18:36

Surely latte is just pronounced latty??

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/04/2016 18:36

Ket-chup

Although my ketchup is brown sauce.

Eveninties · 29/04/2016 18:38

It's a frappe that I never order because I don't know how you say it..

FruStefanOla · 29/04/2016 18:43

"Surely latte is just pronounced latty??" What, like 'fatty', 'natty' or 'tatty', Even?

No, it is lattay.

Frappé = frappay

Oysterbabe · 29/04/2016 18:44
