Just heard the news about Princes death is true and not a hoax as originally thought.

Is there a hex on people, even in my world, people are dying around us left, right and centre Sad

noeffingidea · 21/04/2016 21:04

I think more deaths occur during the winter months as well, so that might be a factor. They may ease off now, at least in the northern hemisphere.

MsJamieFraser · 21/04/2016 21:08

noeffingidea please dont apologise you have no need to, there will be someone people who do think there is some celebrity cull conspiracy according to some on my FB anyway

I see the post you were also referring to also.

So sad. He was still young.

CommonBurdock · 21/04/2016 21:12

2016 is a number 9 year. Highly karmic, a year of endings and conclusions.

And statistical clustering thingys, obviously.

RudeElf · 21/04/2016 21:13

oh dear...

Rinoachicken · 21/04/2016 21:13

I think also that many are of an era where they lived and played 'hard'

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 21/04/2016 21:13

I remember the night I heard about Michael Jackson. I was so shocked it felt like I'd been winded. He was my musical hero.

originalmavis · 22/04/2016 07:16

And Freddie Mercury, David Bowie. Absolute shockers.

originalmavis · 22/04/2016 07:20

There was a bit on the radio yesterday after this news hit announcing a 'mega fest' in the States next year and they were talking about Bob Dylan, The Who... (I suspect its a 'get to see them now before its too late).

All big names. I was only half listening and though 'whaaa? Whose snuffed it now?'

They are playing Prince songs all over the place. My god, it's my teen years. Absolutely genius. No comment from Sheena Easton.

Buckinbronco · 22/04/2016 07:31

I remember saying a few years ago it seems like loads of famous people are dying this year. It happens in cycles I think

ElizabethWindsorBirthdayGirl · 22/04/2016 07:46

Interesting to learn that he was vegan / vegetarian and also a JW since 2001 so he has probably been quite clean living for 15 years. He was photographed (although not nec 100% him) out riding his bike on Sunday. I bet he was of the true rock star proclivities before then so maybe the damage was done then. But then flu can do horrible things to your heart. I knew someone who had a fatal heart attack 3 weeks after a bad flu bug.

originalmavis · 22/04/2016 07:57

Did he have family? I seem to rember hearing that he had a child.

ElizabethWindsorBirthdayGirl · 22/04/2016 08:43

He had a son who died a week after he was born. I can't remember what was wrong with him but he had a condition that I think would have meant he would have been quite disabled had he survived. Very sad.

noeffingidea · 22/04/2016 09:10

Elizabeth it was pfeiffers syndrome, a condition where the bones of the skull are fused. Very very sad.
I believe the cause of death is now been given as overdose of opiates/opiate substitutes. Whether that is official I'm not certain.

originalmavis · 22/04/2016 09:12

What? I thought he was very anti drink and drugs.

Whathaveilost · 22/04/2016 09:38

Maybe this will halt the celebrity death curse of 2016

noeffingidea · 22/04/2016 09:48

originalmavis there's a lot of talk going around , about did he have aids, was he in denial about being gay/bi, his religion, etc. Things are getting a bit crazy.
I think because he died suddenly there has to be a proven cause of death on the death certificate.
He does seem to have been a private person in control of his public image, so the whole story might not come out.

Whathaveilost · 22/04/2016 10:03

In the case of Prince, maybe the death was only sudden to us. Who knows what was going on behind the scenes.
Same with Victoria Wood and David Bowie, how many of us knew they had cancer and how advanced it was?

timwonnacotsbowtie · 22/04/2016 10:19

I said to DH last night, it seems like it's building up to something big, like a senior Royal. And if I was Bruce Forsyth I'd be taking my vitamins...
RIP to all the people, famous or not who have died in this seemingly grim year.

ElizabethWindsorBirthdayGirl · 22/04/2016 10:45

More sad news.

What the effing hell is going on in 2016 with deaths, now Prince
FearOfFlying · 22/04/2016 10:58

I did a serious double take there Elizabeth Grin

I'm v scared for Brucie now Shock

FearOfFlying · 22/04/2016 11:01

The Daily Mash article is v funny - but Shock Sad that they mention David A. Shhh. Just no.

WannaBe · 22/04/2016 11:20

IMO the reality is that people are dying all over the world all the time. It just happens that the ones that are dying at the moment tend to be people who were more widely known than just the average iyswim. It is incredibly sad though, and a stark reminder that life is in fact short and we never know when our number's up.

All that being said, some of these people, David Bowie, Prince, led incredibly wrecless lives. Alcohol, drugs, bad routines e.g. No sleep/recording/composing etc late into the night, plus promiscuous (in Bowie's case anyway) lifestyles which could lead to being exposed to any number of STD's and the list goes on.

It's not a coincidence that so many of the greatest musicians and performers die young. They live hard, play hard, and at some point it catches up with them.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/04/2016 11:33

YANBU OP

Watching, reading, listening to the news feels a weird world right now. Brexit interspersed with celebrities dying.

OurBlanche · 22/04/2016 11:39

Noeffingidea who mentioned conspiracy? Weird comment to make when people are simply commenting in the current cluster of celeb deaths, a statistical anomaly, given the previous year's data, easily available in a wide variety of online pages!

That is UK, high profile/well known celebrities in a wide range of areas, not all well known people worldwide - which is porbably skewing perceptions, but that doesn't make them less valid!

All that added to an increased media coverage of other deaths, inclkuding refugees and terrorist attacks (not to mention some deaths in family and freinds, as OP and others have said) No conspiracy apart from those pesky terrorists and you. It's just something some MNers have noticed.

SoThatHappened I am happy for you that none of your childhood music/TV heroes/likes have died and that you have not noticed the current cluster of deaths. Some of us are a little older, maybe, or just more likely to have liked the work, and so feel some loss, of some of those names who have died.
