MsJamieFraser · 21/04/2016 18:19

Just heard the news about Princes death is true and not a hoax as originally thought.

Is there a hex on people, even in my world, people are dying around us left, right and centre Sad

TendonQueen · 21/04/2016 19:49

Yeahsure hope you actually meant Organon there and not me! I wasn't the one saying that.

NeedACleverNN · 21/04/2016 19:54

m.yorkpress.co.uk/news/14440272.35_famous_people_we_ve_said_goodbye_to_in_2016/

37 so far this year

BishopBrennansArse · 21/04/2016 19:54

That blind item is only down whilst it's updated.

Lucked · 21/04/2016 20:01

Yes people die every day but the number of people who are famous enough to have segments devoted to them on the news is small.

I find this strange because I had quite a long think about Prince yesterday morning which was completely random. I was thinking how infrequently we see photos of him and wondering what he looked like now. I wondered about his life and if he was social or a bit of a hermit.

Inkanta · 21/04/2016 20:07

That was my thought as well OP. Been so many celebrity deaths in 2016.

Cocolepew · 21/04/2016 20:11

Lucked I have a few Prince fan type things on fb and there has been lots of pictures lately because of his solo tour.
He did look frail in some of the ones I've seen lately.

MsJamieFraser · 21/04/2016 20:12

I do wonder why people feel the need to point out and state the obvious, do you think by saying it out loud makes it even more obvious Confused

Everything lately,ia about death, personally and in the media is just all about death, teens killers, parents killing their children, famous deaths, mass deaths... its all so bloody bleak and we are only a third way through the year.

Huge condolences to those who have lost loved ones and those who are mourning their idols/celebrity losses Flowers

Prince was a Jehovah's Witness. It could be that he declined medical treatment in preference for others because of his beliefs, a bit like Jim Henson. Or maybe it was something else.

But then this is all hearsay and conjecture. It's of no consequence. He had a huge, fabulous talent and that has suddenly gone. I for one am dismayed and shocked by it because he was part of the soundtrack of my youth. RIP

ElizabethWindsorBirthdayGirl · 21/04/2016 20:14

Shocking. I know flu can kill but I can't help but feel the AIDS theory holds a bit of water. Regardless tho it's a gutting. RIP Purple One.

SoThatHappened · 21/04/2016 20:22

There is NOTHING going on.

All the vintage movie stars popped their clogs at reatively similar ages I would imagine.

In 30 years time, it will be OMG Brad Pitt, OMG Madonna, etc etc etc then hand wringing asking who is next.

It is just life.

No one has any control who lives or dies.

noeffingidea · 21/04/2016 20:28

There's quite a few reasons. One, as someone mentioned, there are more celebrities. Secondly, celebrities in the 70's and 80's were more likely to engage in risky behaviour (drugs, unprotected sex, etc) which can lead to long term damage which was unknown then. Thirdly, many of these people were baby boomers, born into a world of rationing, crappy diets, exposed to passive smoking as children, underage drinking, etc.So not given such a good start in life as we give our children. This is pretty much true of the general population.
All in all it's very sad but I'm expecting a lot of deaths to come up soon.

OurBlanche · 21/04/2016 20:33

Yeah, Prince 57, Victoria Wood 62, Bowie 69, Lemmy 70, Ronnie Corbett 85 and others - almost a 30 year span there, really similar ages!

Why is it hard to accept that the number of celebs dying recently is higher than usual?

It happens every now and then and has much the same effect: some feel saddened that so much talent has gone others want to know why they feel anything for a complete stranger! Weird, hey ho!

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 21/04/2016 20:35

I wouldn't believe the AIDS rumours tbh...hardly anyone dies of AIDS in this day and age especially those with access to good health care which Prince would presumably have had.
Its a bloody wounder though however he died, he was an utterly unique, nutty but irreplaceable artist

SisterMoonshine · 21/04/2016 20:37

We're getting to that age now, where the people we look up to die.

SoThatHappened · 21/04/2016 20:38

Why is it hard to accept that the number of celebs dying recently is higher than usual?

It isnt.

But what isnt hard to grasp is that it is coincidence.

noeffingidea · 21/04/2016 20:41

sharon they do if they stop taking their medication.

MsJamieFraser · 21/04/2016 20:41

I dont find it hard to accept, I do find it unusual however, many well known people have died in such a small time frame. I just think 2016 so far has been about death.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 21/04/2016 20:47

Yes it's coincidence. Routine statistical clustering.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't mention it Confused

noeffingidea · 21/04/2016 20:49

ourblanche why is it hard to accept that an 85 year old (Ronnie Corbett) would die of normal causes, 2 people who used drugs, drank excessively and smoked might die at 69/70 (David Bowie, Lemmy), another person died of cancer at 62 (Victoria Wood). There's nothing strange about any of these deaths. There's no conspiracy.
There will also be a rational explanation for Prince's death, we can only speculate at this point though.

RudeElf · 21/04/2016 20:50

I have noticed a higher than normal number of tragic deaths locally this year tbh. Particularly amongst the homeless which sadly isnt surprising. But also lots of missing people being discovered dead and several murders. Maybe there is just more reporting this year than in previous years.

StealthPolarBear · 21/04/2016 20:51

I don't think people are suggesting a conspiracy. The thread title is sad exasperation.
In thirty years time won't Madonna be 90ish?

MsJamieFraser · 21/04/2016 20:54

Why would celebrity deaths be a conspiracy, I dont think anyone has even thought along those lines at all.

OP posts:
noeffingidea · 21/04/2016 20:58

Sorry, MrsJamieFraser. I was just getting that impression from another post.

ZenNudist · 21/04/2016 20:58

Yeah it's odd. I have definitely had to listen to more radio tributes and extended newspaper articles than I usually do.

Compared to last year we are 1/3 of the way into the year but close to 2/3 (60%) of last years total celebrity deaths. Not that it tells you owt.

My thoughts on Prince were it was probably drugs, prescription or otherwise, like
Michael Jackson (now that was a shock!)

The 500 refugee story made me cry. Sad

Sallystyle · 21/04/2016 21:00

We all know that there is no one sitting in the sky choosing to kill the celebs.

No conspiracy, we are all aware of that.

It's still quite shocking to see so many famous people dying in such a short period. It has been a very high amount which is unusual.

I am sorry OP for your losses Thanks When my children's dad died of cancer his step dad and father in law died a few months later of cancer as well. Of course it was just a coincidence but at the time I had thoughts of why the fuck was the world punishing us.
