In thinking about bariatric surgery?

cheekymonk · 16/04/2016 16:36

I am 37. Weigh 28 stone with a BMI of 58. My Mum describes me as greedy as a baby. I was noticeably overweight from age 7. I was bullied for my size in secondary school. I was size 20 at 12. I was an 18 in year 11 then got bigger, at Uni being a 26. I have tried most diets and been most successful with WEight watchers when I lost 8 stone and was my lowest weight for years at 17 stone. However we moved house, found out both DS and DD had Autism and I lost it from there so am now 28 stone. I have been going to the priory for weekly cbt sessions and whilst me eating is better I am not losing weight. I struggle to walk and am forever scared of breaking furniture. I am scared for my health. DD is 5 and DS is 11. AIBU in considering surgery? I do have a lovely DH btw.

user1469928875 you don't seem to have the capacity to understand that compulsive overeating is a mental health problem.

Would you tell someone who is feeling suicidal 'just don't kill yourself'

Would you tell someone with schizophrenia 'just stop having hallucinations'
Would you tell someone with anorexia 'just eat something'.

SpeakNoWords · 12/11/2016 20:55

You know, I think she probably would...!

cheekymonk · 12/11/2016 21:02

It will always fascinate and sadden me how fat people are fair game to so many people. I didn't realise how similar anorexia and binge eating disorder were until having therapy for an ED. As long as I am granted funding, I am definitely having op. Best of luck to all of you out there also finding the misery that is obesity x

AntiHop But not all compulsive overeating is a mental health problem, otherwise all those successfully on organised diet plans (WW, SW etc) who have lost a huge amount of weight must have been mentally ill and are now mentally healthy even though they are the same person but with a different diet? Or the mental health problems resolved themselves simultaneously to being on a diet without any MH interventions/support?

Guess what I'm trying to say is that overeating is very personal, there's probably hundreds of reasons and combinations of them why people overeat. Some of them will be strongly linked to MH (abuse victims/traumatic event sufferers) but some are nothing to do with MH. There are circumstantial (accident, change of jobs, life changes like hormonal issues, having children so less time for healthy eating, etc...)

I do agree some overeating is down to MH. But to label everyone who overeats as mentally ill is incorrect and possibly patronising.

I have lost 7 stone, but I will always have a battle with food and I know that. It's hard to put it into words (so I apologise if I end up waffling) - it has taken me a very long time but I have learnt to control my eating the vast majority of the time but that demon is still very much part of me and always will be and when things get tough it wins. That happens less as time goes on but I don't think there will ever be a time where that demon won't be a part of me.

I am lucky that along the road to weight loss I discovered running so in a lot of ways that has replaced the over eating for me. When I am stressed now I tend to reach for my running shoes rather than the food. Both are an emotional crutch for me though.

Brilliant update, well done. I really wish you well.

I have a little update too from my post on here. I started Slimming World in May, and have lost 3.5 stone. Still a long way to go, but really going to try and get there this time.

Please keep updating us, and I hope you get selected for surgery and it goes well for you.

MadameJosephine · 12/11/2016 23:40

Glad to hear you aren't letting ignorant and rude comments get to you and I hope you find a solution to your weight problem, surgical or otherwise.

Why you are waiting for referral have you thought about hypnosis? I've been using the easyloss virtual gastric band app, it only cost me £4.99 from the App Store and I've loss 23 pounds so far. Might be worth a try, you never know you might end up not needing the real thing

MadameJosephine · 12/11/2016 23:41

*while you are waiting

AntiHop · 13/11/2016 01:08

JennyPocket there is a difference between overeating and compulsive overeating/binge eating disorder.

Matchingbluesocks · 13/11/2016 01:19

I'm amazed it hasn't already been recommended to you. Do it

FoggyMorn · 14/11/2016 22:11

Jennypocket, I don't think all binge eating disorders are caused by mental health problems.

I do think that that the reverse might be true for a lot of people- certain types of foods (and I'm meaning highly processed, nutrient poor, calorie dense manufactured "food"), can cause or trigger binge eating, depression and other mental health problems.
