Babies and piercings

I saw someone today who had an 8 month old little girl with her ears pierced. Am I alone in thinking that it's wrong to do that to a baby?

I know it's only a quick procedure but I'm a bit shocked that people still do this. AIBU?

I do hate seeing babies with pierced ears

My mum had my ears pierced before I was two, no lasting physical or psychological damage here ( well not caused by the ear piercing anyway )

It is a bit council, having your babies ears pierced.

It's definitely cultural. I lived in Spain and it's very much the done thing there to pierce a baby girl's ears. To be honest, I can't be bothered getting my judgey pants on when I know that your background and culture plays a massive part in your decision to put tiny holes in your daughters ears.

When I took my dd to have her ears pierced when she was 10, to claire's accssories I had my baby ds in the pram with me. The woman in the shop said I needed the red book. I said 'really? She's ten, I don't know where it is' and she said 'oh, I thought you meant the baby'. After dd's ears had been done, I was incredulous and asked the women if that meant they would have actually done both my clearly a boy, looked like the 3rd Mitchell brother sons ears, and they, apparently would have, provided he's had all his jabs.

I live in a council flat - don't get my words twisted.

It's judgy to say babies piercing are council - I am certain it's not just babies living in council estates that get their ears done

I do understand the culture point of view, this instance it was just to look "pretty".

I suppose I'm just a bit shocked that places pierce babies ears purely for cosmetic purposes.

But each to their own I suppose- I was just wondering if I WBU for it to make me cringe a bit!!

I personally do not see anything wrong with it for baby girls.
It is simply cultural and parents choice.

Speaking as someone who waited 30+ years and has only just had their ears pierced, (see my thread about the infection in one ear) I think it is wrong to pierce a baby's ears.

I knew what I was getting into, ie there was a chance of infection.

A baby does not have this say.

There was no cultural reason for my mum to do. She did it for the same reason she curled my hair every day... she thought it looked nice. I don't see an issue with it.
