Off on a tangent here, but....

I love THESE hair pins.
My hair is stupidly long, thick & heavy and I can hold it ALL in place just using these.

I get mine in Claire's Accessories for a couple of quid a pair and they last for YEARS.

They seriously do the same job as it would take a whole pack of regular hairpins.

YYY to hair screws! (not real name possibly...) They keep my mane under control, more than any kirby grip or bobble can...

OvO · 15/04/2016 16:20

I'm wearing two plaits right now. I'm 35 and don't give two hoots what anyone else says.

I'm also 4'11" so look about 12. Might see if I can still get on the bus for a half. Grin

TheNaze73 · 15/04/2016 16:37

Never too old for two plaits

specialsubject · 15/04/2016 17:35

it is entirely up to you and I would say nothing; but they look silly on anyone past the little girl stage, same as bunches. And babygros.

if your hair is too long and heavy for a ponytail, french plait it down both sides and then into one tail. That's the adult version.

These are my adventure time boots, I love them!

Teacaddy · 15/04/2016 17:43

Fly, the people who would object on the grounds of your age are the type who, a few years back, would have bosom-hoiked about any woman over fifty having anything other than a nice blue rinse and set.

SistersOfPercy · 15/04/2016 17:59

By 30, though, it's time to start cultivating a more grown-up style

I have just put my hair in two plaits. Love it, and I'm nearly 40. I'm going out for dinner tomorrow and now I'm planning my outfit around two plaited pigtails. Grin

IAmALeafOnTheWindWatchHowISoar · 15/04/2016 18:19

So true TeaCaddy, my DM has been on at me since I was about 35 to have all my hair cut off and have a more grown up style and I know I embarrass her when I have it coloured. Looking at pictures of her at my age now and she looks old.

Go for the plaits.

My hair has all fallen out recently so I am bereft of my plaits It was arse length, purple, very thick and I used to plait it and coil/pin them on top of my head. I had a suit type job too, and much nearer 40 to 30.

I think people look so much more "stylish" when they wear what suits them rather than what is either in fashion, or deemed by other people to be suitable.

MewlingQuim · 15/04/2016 18:34

2 plaits is definitely the best way to wear hair for sports at any age. No bobble or clips to get in the way of helmets or get squashed into your head (ouch) and I find hair stays in place much better than a ponytail.

I cut my hair short a couple of years ago and I'm growing it back long because too short to plait hair is a pain in the arse.

Plaits are practical Grin

I always click on pictures wondering if I will turn out to know the people. I don't know you Derek but I wish I did. Your hair is fabulous.

And you madameginger. Those boots rock.

ILovePies · 15/04/2016 19:16

Derek have you tried leaving in plaits overnight then straightening them before you take them out in the morning?

Fly definitely not too old! Hope not anyway, as I'm 25 and wear my hair like that a lot! Please post a pic of it finished :)

My hair is ridiculously thick so doesn't usually work on my hair, but my cousin who used to have your gorgeous colour hair used to do it & it looked fab :)

icanteven · 15/04/2016 20:15

I'd love to be able to do these (Dutch/Kardashian Braids/Plaits):

cosmouk.cdnds.net/16/07/980x490/landscape-1455817814-kim-k.jpg

Obv. not the colour.

But I'm not sure I could do them straight on my own. I'm 37, btw. I think there are more options for "smart" plaits in style these days than there were a few years ago.

So many gorgeous styles here

AlpacaPicnic · 15/04/2016 21:49

I'm going to double-plait tomorrow in solidarity.

Up the plaits!

Oooh the Dutch plait - this is DH's nemesis! He has been doing our DDs and mine when I had hair plaits for years and learnt French plaiting from a combination of You Tube videos and his younger sister's guidance. It was nice and neat for when they were little and now they're teens they like the complicated trendy styles. He does some amazing creations!

The Dutch seem to be defeating him though - there are endless cries of "but how does it go under" and "just one more minute, if you miss the bus I'll drop you off" WinkGrin

It makes for a somewhat stressful morning but their friends are very admiring of their fancy hair.

MiffleTheIntrovert · 16/04/2016 09:38

Derek, and anyone else who likes the left over waviness, I remember my mother sitting patiently before bedtimes plaiting my hair into the smallest multiple plaits (sometimes 40 of them) and securing them with rubber bands so I could take them out in the morning and have wavy/curly hair.

Oh my god I've married my mother

We need a photo when you're ready Derek

Isn't it funny, I spent years moaning about my huge hair and either ignoring it or trying to flatten it into submission and the minute it disappears I am googling elaborate hairstyles on a bloody kardashian ffs and begging people for photos of their hair...Hmm
