To not let my DM call her dog a name I wanted for my non-existent baby?

So if I ever have another girl I'd like to call her Isla- we are ttc. My DM also loves the name and has always wanted to call her dog that if she got one. She is now getting a dog. AIBU to tell her she can't use the name when I'm not even pregnant? Can you think of any similar alternative pretty names for DM's dog?

I don't know really. Has she always liked the name?

Actually, Isla isn't a great name for a dog. How about Tilly or Milly?

Yes obviously I may have a boy or might not even get pregnant at all. But if I did the name I couldn't use the name. We have both always liked the name.

I'm sitting with her discussing it now, trying to think of alternative names but not getting very far. She would like a pretty girls name, preferably Scottish, not too doggy.

We have a cat and a child with the same name. The cat had the name when she came to us, we already had the child. We considered changing it, but we though that it would confuse things at school.

You can still use the name even if the dog is called that. It's not like it's your dog! What if you ask her not to and then have a boy or a girl but change your mind on the name?

You can't tell someone what names they can't use for their pet.

Thing is she still wants me to call my daughter, should I have one, Isla. She's hesitating calling the dog Isla in case it puts me of if I have a girl. if if if. Lots of ifs!

I wouldn't name my child after a dog.

She can call the dog what she wants in all fairness. You can still use it. I have a goat named after me, everyone thought it was cute. I think all this is a little precious tbh. There are thousands of kids and probably hundreds of dogs called Isla. Its a pretty common name. We had 4 Isla's at the nursery where I used to volunteer over the course of 2 years. Various spellings though. Don't even get me started on the Lily's, that was some major confusion. Besides not wanting to sound cruel but what breed of dog is this? Because not all breeds live that long and it may have passed away by the time she hits her teens and I can't see a young child being bothered.

Why don't you choose another name? Isla can't be the only name you like?

That's always something that puts me and people I know off names, as soon as someone says "oh so and so has a dog called that" it's crossed off the list.

More to the point, as DM is getting the dog soon and you aren't even pregnant, I think you should be asking her if she minds you naming your child after her dog.
