To not let my DM call her dog a name I wanted for my non-existent baby?

So if I ever have another girl I'd like to call her Isla- we are ttc. My DM also loves the name and has always wanted to call her dog that if she got one. She is now getting a dog. AIBU to tell her she can't use the name when I'm not even pregnant? Can you think of any similar alternative pretty names for DM's dog?

My DM did the same thing to me - she named her dog Holly 20 years ago, at which time Holly was 'my' name for my future DD.

Despite getting pregnant later that year & having DS1 (who really wouldn't have thanked me for calling him Holly), it was actually another 14 years before I had a DD. By which time, Holly the dog had died and I had a very close friend with a DD named Holly - so it was ruled out for a totally different reason!

Moral of the story - don't worry about something that may never ever matter.

Edie?

memyselfandaye · 14/04/2016 12:18

By the time you have a child, if its a girl, Isla could be the same as Lily-Mae or Jayden is now, or Demi-Leigh was 15yrs ago, and by that I mean common and a bit naff.

There are four Islas in my son's class and I know of two others, all under 7.

BestZebbie · 14/04/2016 12:18

If you have a DD and name her Isla are you going to be upset by the 100 Elsas in the year above?

SilverBirchWithout · 14/04/2016 12:20

We had a cat named x. Niece, a couple of years later, then called DS the same name. This pissed me off a bit as there are so many other lovely other names she could have chosen.

HTH

Ps. Actually it's not a bit issue really. Our dear cat is now dead and in a few years time it will be even less important

whois · 14/04/2016 12:21

Rhona

that is lovely

Notonthestairs · 14/04/2016 12:22

I wanted to call my DS the same name that my parents had called their puppy. My DM freaked out and we changed our minds so it became a non problem - but I was thinking maybe you could say IF we have a baby girl she WILL be called Isla and therefore you (MiL) may feel odd that your dog has the same name and put the onus on her to decide that would it be wrong.

You'd then have to stick to the name BTW or you would be unreasonable!

MTPurse · 14/04/2016 12:22

My DM's cat has the same name as my DD

[shrugs]

MyLocal · 14/04/2016 12:22

Call the dog Bonnie.

I chose my DD's name when I was 22, 8 years before I had my first child and 11 before I got a daughter so I don't blame you for putting a reserved stick on it!

Isla is lovely name, for a child, not a dog.

Notonthestairs · 14/04/2016 12:24

Sorry, I meant DM not MiL!

MyLocal · 14/04/2016 12:24

oh, and my animals all have human names, but ugly human names no present day human would want, they are really quirky for the animals though.

MsMims · 14/04/2016 12:24

I think YABU. You might never have a daughter, and if you did you might not even still like the name/ think it suits her.

spiderlight · 14/04/2016 12:25

Skye?

SqueegyBeckinheim · 14/04/2016 12:26

Isla has become v v popular recently, it's a nice name but I know so many baby and toddler Islas that I wouldn't use it. There are some great suggestions on here of similar but much less well used names.

PestilentialCat · 14/04/2016 12:27

if she herself wants you to call a daughter Isla then why on earth is she going to give her dog the same name?

Confused
QuimReaper · 14/04/2016 12:32

I don't really see the problem with the dog and the baby having the same name. A shade eccentric, but the child will outlive the dog many times over.

pigsDOfly · 14/04/2016 12:32

Actually Skye is a lovely name for a dog Spiderlight. Would be great for something like a beautiful rough collie.

You don't specify, but I suspect you're suggesting it for a child though.

Budgetbust · 14/04/2016 12:33

Grin one of my cousins was actually named after the family dog. . . and to make it worse the dog was still alive!

So (as an example) until the dog died it was Bob and then Bob the baby. . .

It wasn't as if they'd tried for years got a dog gave it a much loved name and then the baby came along.

He (my cousin not the dog) asked his parents once and they said they had no idea why, it seemed like a good idea at the time and in fairness my cousin meant they had 4 under 4. . .a 3 year old and twins 16 month old a new born and a dog.

Now that he has DC of his own he acknowledges it could have been a whole lot worse.

Queenie73 · 14/04/2016 12:34

My youngest son was named after my father (although my dad only uses his middle name) and my grandfather. I forgot until after he was born that my dad's dog has the same name too. It isn't likely to be a long term problem since the dog is 10 and I don't really care anyway.
I wouldn't worry about it. Baby names can change once the baby is born. One of mine had a name chosen as soon as the pregnancy test turned blue, and the name stayed the same all the way until I saw the baby and said "Oh no, the name isn't X, it's Y".

UterusUterusGhali · 14/04/2016 12:35

My DS has a prize bull named after him. .

(Farmer's daughter is in DS's class.Smile)

Mouseinahole · 14/04/2016 12:35

Jinty
Jessy
Flora
Iona
Annie
Skye
Maggie

PedantPending · 14/04/2016 12:37

One of my cousins' children was called after my aunt's dog (second name).
The name was Kate. Nobody batted an eyelid.

needastrongone · 14/04/2016 12:44

To be fair OP, I think it's unfair to stop anyone using a name that they like for a pet or a baby or whatever! There are far too many ifs and buts and maybes anyway. The dog can be called whatever your DM likes, it's not your call.

Even if it is annoying Smile
