To not let my DM call her dog a name I wanted for my non-existent baby?

So if I ever have another girl I'd like to call her Isla- we are ttc. My DM also loves the name and has always wanted to call her dog that if she got one. She is now getting a dog. AIBU to tell her she can't use the name when I'm not even pregnant? Can you think of any similar alternative pretty names for DM's dog?

If you really want her not to have the name yanbu. I was trying to change a letter to see if it could work but ended up amusing myself with names like Itla, Imla (hitler, himmler). I know a dog called Lola. That's cute.

deste · 14/04/2016 12:48

There is always Ailsa or Iona or Skye.

sparechange · 14/04/2016 12:49

We accidentally named our dog after my MIL
She goes by her middle name, and DH had 'forgotten' that she has an actual first name.

I only found out when we were staying at PILs, and I picked the post up from the doormat. There was a letter addressed to [dog's name] [usual name] [surname]

She's never mentioned it to me, so either doesn't mind, or is incandescent about it

HellonHeels · 14/04/2016 12:49

Mhairi?

SuperFlyHigh · 14/04/2016 12:50

I know a dog called Ruby and it's 'sibling' was called Bertie the DD in the family was named after a flower...

Worse things to worry about in my opinion.

Bogeyface · 14/04/2016 12:51

We have a cat and a child with the same name. The cat had the name when she came to us, we already had the child. We considered changing it, but we though that it would confuse things at school. :o :o

My parents friends named their dog the girls name that they wanted to use for a DD, but they had had three sons. Just happened to be my name, which did feel odd for a while but we soon got used to it.

DementedUnicorn · 14/04/2016 12:55

My DF has called every male dog he's ever named before and after I came along a derivative of my name. My maternal GF has a dog with the same name as well. Some people are just really, really unimaginative .

ThereIsIron · 14/04/2016 13:02

I always liked Eilidh

VeganCow · 14/04/2016 13:05

chemenger We considered changing it, but we though that it would confuse things at school haha love that

MaynJune · 14/04/2016 13:28

Near Glenisla is Glen Clova. How about Clova - for dog or baby?

dippywhentired · 14/04/2016 13:28

Call the dog Flora

HackerFucker22 · 14/04/2016 13:48

When I was pregnant with DD I posted a thread about naming my child the same as my cat.

Consensus was it is fine - very few people outside of immediate family know cats name.

Same applies here.

Both use it.

HackerFucker22 · 14/04/2016 13:49

PS I didn't use the cats name in the end as I found something I much preferred!

Delacroix · 14/04/2016 13:59

Advise her that dogs do better with a hard sound/syllable in the name. A dog might not even hear 'Isla'; there's no solid sound to hang on to.

heron98 · 14/04/2016 14:26

YABVU. Who cares if your kid has the same name as her dog? DOes it really matter in the grand scheme of things? No one "owns" a name.

Rockinghorse123 · 14/04/2016 14:32

I stupidly named my mums dog my favourite boys name, I now have 2 boys and I didn't use the name because it's the dogs name now.

Definitely ask your mum to use another name. As a pp suggested I really like Morag that meets your mums requirements!

Islaskye · 14/04/2016 15:43

Most of these lovely Scottish suggestions are already in use in our family! Hence why we're looking for another Scottish name. Tbf my mum actually wants me to use the name if I do have a girl, she just can't think of anything else she likes for the dog. I'm not actually going to tell her she can't use it...

I would tell your mum that if you ever have another baby you love the name Isla and would probably choose it and see if she backs down about choosing it for the dog.

If, indeed, you end up with Isla and dog and a baby girl then I would probably still call the baby Isla. The dog might fall off the mortal coil after a year... plus how often do you really see her? When you see your mum with the dog maybe the dog could then have a nickname - Lala or something so that your baby doesn't get confused. It will be fine!

diddl · 14/04/2016 16:39

"she just can't think of anything else she likes for the dog."

I would have thought that it's much easier to name a dog tbh.

I like Bonnie as someone else suggested.

Elsa?

Jessie?

JocastaFarquhar · 14/04/2016 16:44

DD is in a class with 17 other children. 10 are boys. Of the remaining 7 girls, 3 are called Isla. Just saying.

Poikjhvcx · 14/04/2016 17:07

Two of my DC are named after family pets. As long as you don't live in the same house then I don't think it matters. At least it was never a problem for us.
One pet was a dog and one was a cat.

glueandstick · 14/04/2016 17:10

Everyone ends up being called by pet's names anyhow, at least this way it'll be correct.

Clare1971 · 14/04/2016 17:15

How about Eileen? That way you get to hear DM call 'Come on Eileen' every now and then and you can laugh. but only if you're as old as I am

Almostfifty · 14/04/2016 17:17

Call the dog Thistle.

CrystalMcPistol · 14/04/2016 17:18

Isla is pretty old hat as a name anyway. Let the hound have Isla and call your kid Eigg.
