DH wants to buy a Discovery Sport 7 seater so we can fit 3 DCs plus others.

We live in a relatively affluent area. Discovery Sports around here are driven by perfectly pleasant women, but women who tend not to work, to spend a lot of time and energy on appearance, and who definitely don't ever drive off road.

I come from a working class family. We currently are not affluent. I have worked since I could. I like working. I like to look nice, but for me style is less important than substance.

I do NOT want to drive a Discovery Sport. We have talked about this. He has just bought a friend who works for LR home with one for us to test drive. I work in marketing. I understand very clearly why people chose the brands they chose.

AIBU to insist that we do not buy the Discovery Sport on brand/looks/target market grounds only and the fact it has a fucking tiny rear window which might be why they're always parked over two bays round these parts

Private transport is a pretty high contributor worldwide

Who gives a shit? Certainly not me. Sadly Lance, I can't post on here what I think about tree-hugging fuckwits without getting told off so you'll just have to use your imagination.

MerryMarigold · 11/04/2016 13:27

Your name is quite appropriate Simon!

Lancelottie · 11/04/2016 13:38

Oooh. Splendid use of Next-Strongest Possible Terms there, Simple.

SimpleSimonThePieMan · 11/04/2016 13:39

Your name is quite appropriate Simon!

It's ironic! I'm usually the most intelligent person in the room.

Lancelottie · 11/04/2016 13:41

I bet. Do you often work alone?

MerryMarigold · 11/04/2016 13:43

Grin. I bet you've never been in a room with Donald Trump...he'd trump you.

Nanny2016 · 11/04/2016 17:32

Wonky - I completely agree with you, my 4wd is the same!!

NaiceVillageOfTheDammed · 11/04/2016 21:22

I am a lifetime member of the smallest car I need tribe.

First car was a Smart.
Current car, Toyota IQ - fits me, Naice Husband, Naice Boy and Naice Dog and a toothbrush (just).

SquidgeyMidgey · 11/04/2016 21:22

Our bigger new 4wd is much more fuel efficient than the 8yo smaller car we traded in for it, but on the surface it looks like be got a bigger gas guzzler, in reality engines have got better in that time. I was quite surprised when we got it as I was sure it was going to be worse
Oh wonkylegs dear please don't start muddying the waters with common sense. Anyone would think the poor engineers working silly hours at reducing engine emissions while maintaining and improving performance might actually be achieving something...

I bet your 4x4 does more to the gallon than my knackered old petrol Series III. Add that to my chavtastic souped up Golf and I think I need locking away.

nooka · 12/04/2016 01:17

My old 1996 truck was much more inefficient than the 2002 replacement, and a new truck would be better yet. All of them are far less efficient than the equivalent small car. At the very least because small cars are a great deal lighter and so have less weight for the engine to pull. I can fill my jetta for $60 and it lasts about three weeks. Same daily trips in my truck and I'd have to refill two maybe three times, at twice the cost (much bigger tank). If I use the 4 wheel drive (which I do if I go on unpaved roads in the winter) then it eats gas at twice the rate.

anklebitersmum · 12/04/2016 01:32

I'm in the 'Must be well under 5K, have at least seven seats, room for a large dog and the biter's seats are not an integral part of the crumple zone' tribe.

Otherwise known as the 'Aspires to a posh mini-bus posse' Grin

shadowfax07 · 12/04/2016 01:48

Theoretically, I drive an 03 plate diesel Seat Leon, and DP drives a Ford Focus ST3. Both are great cars to drive, so I'm wondering which tribe we belong to?

I've always wanted a Landy though, maybe when the current one becomes BER

rockabella · 12/04/2016 03:07

I drive a W reg Clio and my grandfather drives a T-Reg Discovery and also has one on J plate! Wonder what people think of us going by our cars! We could both afford something newer but have no need!

The new discos have nothing on the old shape ones anyway! Love a big, boxy landy over these new fangled ones!

FlyRussianUnicorn · 12/04/2016 03:12

Sorry but I cant fucking stand women who drive 4x4s when there is no necessity. Mostly because they cant drive and park them. Theres one 4x4 who shops at our local Waitrose and insists on parking in the middle of two bays. She says it so her car doesnt get scratched- but once when watching her reverse, if that skill was anything to go by it was more like because she couldnt park the bloody thing.

FlyRussianUnicorn · 12/04/2016 03:14

A Mini cooper is typically driven by a wealthy woman.

Well shit. I wonder where MY millions are hiding.

MagentaSpunkTrumpet · 12/04/2016 04:18

I drive a Discovery
neglects to mention it is 20 years old and has approximately 20 years worth of mud and dog hair accumulated inside

On the plus side I fit in a treat in my naice, country sport loving village. On the down side it is too tall for the Waitrose car park, costs a small fortune in fuel and needs driving into parking spaces in order to be able to put things in the boot- then you have to manoeuvre the fecker back out Hmm

MissTurnstiles · 12/04/2016 08:07

Sorry but I cant fucking stand women who drive 4x4s when there is no necessity

What about men who drive 4x4 when there is no need?

BeaufortBelle · 12/04/2016 08:21

This was quite a reasonable thread a few pages back.

Nanny2016 · 12/04/2016 09:27

FlyRussianUnicorn - I agree but at the same time disagree!
I drive a 4x4, I am a woman and I can drive and park it perfectly fine! I also drive a campervan which again I can park and drive perfectly fine! And I don't shop at waitrose lol.
But..I also know a few people (not just women) who can't seem to park straight and it does frustrate me, it's not always in big cars either!

A big car works for me although I generally have no need for it, I have kids in it daily because of my job, I have a Labrador that I like to take places for long walks but I also suffer from a bad back and having a higher car makes things so much easier on my back!

dizzytomato · 12/04/2016 10:01

I drive a 4x4 but we have a farm, many of the roads where we live are dirt roads like something from a Top Gear challenge. We have used the 4 wheel drive option a handful of times when the rain has cut deep gauges in the road, but on normal dirt roads it's not necessary.

I admit, when I see shiny 4x4 in cities my judgy pants do go on and are hoiked right up to my neck

Aworldofmyown · 12/04/2016 11:40

Plenty of shite drivers don't have 4x4's. In fact I think someone pointed out the percentage of 4x4's on the road further up thread.

I can't stand any fucking useless driver, man or woman, 4x4 or Toyota Aygo.

Last year a small car driver reversed out of a space next to my car and scraped her car all the way down the side of mine - damaged every panel and caused over £1000 worth of damage to a car that was only worth £2000. Luckily she was a nice shite driver and left her details. Given the amount of people who scrape cars and don't leave details I can understand why you would park in two spaces with an expensive car.

MerdeAlor · 12/04/2016 19:21

I have a 4x4 and drive and park perfectly well.
Peculiar thought process that leads someone to loathe women who drive a certain type of car with the assumption that they can't drive or park.

FlyRussianUnicorn · 12/04/2016 19:29

Couldnt care less how expensive someones car is if im honest. Parking like a prick boils my blood. And thats what insurance is for.

I have a "expensive" car but if anything happened to it I couldnt even afford the excess on my insurance to get it repaired. Does that mean I go around parking like a pillock? No. Because im considerate.

Hilbo10 · 12/04/2016 19:39

Do you care a lot what people do think of your choices, hence the post?

Seems an odd way to live life, if you're not careful you'll end living someone else's life.
