DH wants to buy a Discovery Sport 7 seater so we can fit 3 DCs plus others.

We live in a relatively affluent area. Discovery Sports around here are driven by perfectly pleasant women, but women who tend not to work, to spend a lot of time and energy on appearance, and who definitely don't ever drive off road.

I come from a working class family. We currently are not affluent. I have worked since I could. I like working. I like to look nice, but for me style is less important than substance.

I do NOT want to drive a Discovery Sport. We have talked about this. He has just bought a friend who works for LR home with one for us to test drive. I work in marketing. I understand very clearly why people chose the brands they chose.

AIBU to insist that we do not buy the Discovery Sport on brand/looks/target market grounds only and the fact it has a fucking tiny rear window which might be why they're always parked over two bays round these parts

Now see I would lump a Q7 and a landrover discovery sport together. grin

+1

Oh dear Whothefuckissimon! Looks like I've made a boob!

BusyCee · 06/04/2016 21:01

LaurieFairyCake. That's part of the issue. We can't afford it. I think DH wants it for prestige. I want functional. Because the kids will cover it with shit anyway.

I refuse to believe this as otherwise I will be in the boring as mince tribe going by my car. Sob.

You are correct in that a car is a status symbol for many. Would a 4wd be useful for the snow? (This would be my reason to get one if I could afford one.) I would be more put off by the rear window though.

I do get what you mean about associating a car with a certain type of person, but I suppose it shows how effective marketing is and how engrained our prejudices are (self included).

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 06/04/2016 21:04

I can tell your area is only relatively affluent. If it was really affluent you'd be talking about the Porsche Cayenne, the only way a woman of a certain status can drive around.
Actually, it's for women. You dh needs to get himself a smaller sports car. Grin

timemaychangeme · 06/04/2016 21:05

I'm a member of the AygoBlue tribe. We are small, innocuous looking and appear harmless. However, drive close enough to one and you will witness our uncannily poor spacial awareness, our inability to reverse into a large parking space and fearsome pranging skills. It's not for no reason that we are feared and revered in equal measure by other tribes. We punch above our weight, whilst giving ambiguous signals and changing lanes at the last moment. Watch and weep.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 06/04/2016 21:06

Your car should cost no more than 10% of your annual income.

FarelyKnuts · 06/04/2016 21:06

If you can afford to choose your car by brand rather than "what can I get for fuck all because my last one just died?" then I'm afraid you are affluent!

GabiSolis · 06/04/2016 21:07

I really want to know what tribe I am! I drive a Ford Fusion and DP drives an Audi A3. What are we?

Bohemond · 06/04/2016 21:07

The DS is not prestige, it is the replacement for the freelander. They have just rebadged so numpties think they are getting an Evoque.
I have a freelander but round here you need at least one of these to get around.
I will not buy a DS on principle - the freelander is staying for now.

NewLife4Me · 06/04/2016 21:08

Pippi

The Porsche Cayenne has been recalled hasn't it.
My ds1 bought one, not new obviously.
it goes like stink though Grin

We have an old Passat, not sure what tribe that makes us. We have never had a new car, usually at least 4 years old.

HighwayDragon1 · 06/04/2016 21:10

I drive a ford fiesta, DH drives a volvo xc90. Figure that out

Sagethyme · 06/04/2016 21:11

worra that made me chuckle!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 06/04/2016 21:11

Yanbu op, I completely agree with you. I think choice of car says a huge amount about a person. More than almost anything else I can think of.

I live in an increasingly expensive suburb of London and there are more and more 4 x 4s in my area, with - no snow and no muddy country lanes! can you believe it??

Those of us unpretentious types with lots of kids and equipment tend to drive Ford Galaxies, Citroen Berlingos or any other run of the mill people carrier.

wasabipeanut · 06/04/2016 21:12

I have an ancient 3 series estate which has seen significantly better days. I'm aiming to create a Jilly Cooperesque sort of vibe from being both too lazy to clean my car & shit at parking.

Loads of my friends like blingier card though - lots of Evoques & Discos at pick up. We live in a smallish market town Grin

Fairylea · 06/04/2016 21:12

I belong to the tribe of "whatever car is the best value for what it is secondhand" ... If you have any more choice than that then you are affluent.

Salmotrutta · 06/04/2016 21:13

If you drive a 4x4 when you never drive off-road/live in a place where the roads are single tracks and you rarely have snow of more than one inch then you belong to the tribe of Really Stupid.

Even I don't drive a 4x4 and I drive on narrow rural roads where we get lots of snow in Winter etc. But I don't drive on tracks or off road, see, so I don't need a 4x4.

wasabipeanut · 06/04/2016 21:13

Blingier cars not card. Shit at typing as well as parking it seems.

AnneElliott · 06/04/2016 21:13

Round where I live, people that drive range rovers or Discoverys are called "Gangsters Wives" Grin

HoneyDragon · 06/04/2016 21:15

I've got a chopper style trike and a bus pass.

Claraoswald36 · 06/04/2016 21:15

I e just bought a vw touran. Dp has a transputer with the long wheel base. When he bought it, it came with the obligatory surf brand sticker.
Several friends have transporters and at least 2 others have tourans. I'm in a right Tribe arnt I Grin
I'm sure transporters are a south west thing my Midlands friends are always marvelling at the plethora of them here Grin

thisismeusernameything · 06/04/2016 21:15

We have a discovery 4. We live in the country and often tow. It is essential for us getting around. If you need it buy it, if you don't then get the car you can afford and feel comfortable with.

I do see what you mean though. Around here everybody rolls their eyes at the Evoque crew and if you don't own an executive brand (Porsche, BMW, Audi, Land Rover etc) you are most certainly not part of the crew.

I have a volvo for my daily get around. When we have been looking at property the reception from the receiving agent is always more positive if we turn up in the 50K car rather than the 20k car. Its a status thing. People treat you differently and I can kind of see why your husband wants it.

They are lovely cars. Once you've had a Discovery, you'll never want anything else.

Lancelottie · 06/04/2016 21:15

We belong to the 'maximum adjustability' tribe. If it'll accommodate an 18-inch height difference between drivers, we're good to go.

Flisspaps · 06/04/2016 21:15

I've got a Suzuki Alto. I wonder what tribe I'm in Grin
