DH wants to buy a Discovery Sport 7 seater so we can fit 3 DCs plus others.

We live in a relatively affluent area. Discovery Sports around here are driven by perfectly pleasant women, but women who tend not to work, to spend a lot of time and energy on appearance, and who definitely don't ever drive off road.

I come from a working class family. We currently are not affluent. I have worked since I could. I like working. I like to look nice, but for me style is less important than substance.

I do NOT want to drive a Discovery Sport. We have talked about this. He has just bought a friend who works for LR home with one for us to test drive. I work in marketing. I understand very clearly why people chose the brands they chose.

AIBU to insist that we do not buy the Discovery Sport on brand/looks/target market grounds only and the fact it has a fucking tiny rear window which might be why they're always parked over two bays round these parts

If I were teaching my car to talk, its first words would be 'you stupid cunt' they would probably be the first words of my husband's car, too!

He drives a large 4x4, doesn't offroad in it, he has it because the height and general size mean he can get his broken spine in and out without hideous pain. Pisses me right off when the anti-4x4 lobby start getting all judgey about non-farmers driving them. Who asked for your ill-informed opinion? If they can afford to buy and run them then what business is it of anyone else's?

SquidgeyMidgey · 08/04/2016 16:56

Sorry, my angry pants screwed up my grammar there. Just naff off having an opinion on other people's fast/expensive/big/old/squeaky cars. If you're happy with your own choice that's all you need to worry about.

bingisthebest · 08/04/2016 17:07

You are right.
It's inverted snobbery but there we are. I would also not buy a discovery or a bmw or Mercedes. Says knob to me!!

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 08/04/2016 17:11

Squidgey but nobody would have any fun here, if they didn't get all offended and judgey about other people's choices!

I find it all hilarious. Luckily mumsnet is my secret vice. In real life I actually have genuine problems to worry about

Claraoswald36 · 08/04/2016 17:12

The most tribey vehicle around here is a transporter with personalised plates. There are dozens of them.
Where does mn stand on the plates? Grin

SquidgeyMidgey · 08/04/2016 17:22

FrankUnderwoodsWife Grin sorry it's a sore point, if you hadn't noticed! I shall slip out of my angry pants and into something more comfortable!

Nanny2016 · 08/04/2016 17:31

Haha, wonder what 'tribe' OH and myself fall into?!

We own a new Nissan Xtrail 4wd, which for me is ideal for work and also have a view of buying a caravan soon! (That's a whole different tribe!) but also because I liked it and we can afford one, I was quite happy with my seat Leon!
We also own a Volkswagen T4 2000 reg converted campervan, would love a split screen or bay window camper but they go for around £30,00-£40,000!!

NewLife4Me · 08/04/2016 17:34

Nanny

You can get a split screen for a few k if you are handy with a needle and thread and don't mind a dooer upper.
Me and ds1 are going to do this, hopefully during summer, got my eyes well open for one atm. Grin

Lancelottie · 08/04/2016 17:45

This one suit either of you?

Nanny2016 · 08/04/2016 18:13

Amazing, you are definitely right NewLife - we did this with the t4, it was a builders van when we got it! We had so much fun and I hope you and DS will too, love the VW way of life, in fact we are off to Cornwall tomorrow for our first camp out of the year!

Lancelottie - if only I had the money right not, it's Only up the road from me too!!

Lauslaw · 08/04/2016 18:21

Can we have a new thread that is simply car makes and other posters guessing their 'tribes' Grin could be messy but sounds like fun!
I drive a bmw estate btw! Would love to know which tribe I belong to and what I do (if I work?)

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 08/04/2016 18:23

what your car says about your social class

Lauslaw · 08/04/2016 18:33

Daily fail? Ouch, not totally accurate! Quite far out on age and I'm not sure about class Wink

SquidgeyMidgey · 08/04/2016 19:15

Those who own Evoques often act as if they have ‘made it’. Frankly, it’s an entry-level Range Rover, so get back in your box - and you probably bought it on finance.
PMSL at this in Simon's link. I think that sums up the feelings on this thread!

witsender · 08/04/2016 20:02

I would rather love a defender though.

FankEweVeryMuch · 08/04/2016 20:11

Claraoswald36 you're not in Wales by any chance?

Sighing · 08/04/2016 20:12

We have my ford focus (had it from new in 06, still goes, stuff replacing it for now) and my dh has his pet exarmy 1980's landrover (it is for off road and tinkering) there's also the work's vehicle. 3 DC's. We own them outright, never buy a car on credit. So any marketi g generally aimed at selling us finance means we're still in the market for a family car, but none seem to be tempting us!

WhatTheActualFugg · 08/04/2016 20:37

a Mini Cooper is driven typically by wealthy women

Ooh check me out!! Smile

nothing to do with the fact it's the only car I can park in John Lewis

Sleepingonthebus · 09/04/2016 10:11

Kia Rio. Big enough for me and the kids, and being a single mum, I really wanted the 7 year warranty.

Claraoswald36 · 09/04/2016 10:15

Fank - no Devon!

Hulababy · 09/04/2016 10:33

Ha ha - just changed my Mini. Changed it for an Abarth 500.

I don't like the Evoque - it looks squashed at the back, and inside the back felt very dark and cramped.

Justontherightsideofnormal · 09/04/2016 10:34

I drive a Zafira , holds 6 children and me 😫 My husband drives a 10 year old Clio. I can only imagine people must think we belong to the " spend all their money on wine" club so have shit cars. We used to be a golf/vw camper van family and used to be in the cool club

lljkk · 09/04/2016 11:17

DH just dissed my car!!! That's it, shall I LTB? Wink

Mrsleighdelamare · 09/04/2016 12:30

Renault here, second-hand. Nothing too nice because it doesn't stay nice in my hands.

I live in Surrey and it's wall-to-wall Evoques and other poncy 4x4s in some parts near here, mostly driven by high-maintenance women who can't drive, let alone park. Or drug dealers probably. I'm sure that's the reason the roads round here are trashed. In fact, you probably do need a four wheel drive to negotiate the pot holes caused by all the 4X4s....

I think lots of the 4x4s are a bit naff. Or as my DM would say, common.

If you don't need off-road capability then you shouldn't buy one IMHO.

UmbongoUnchained · 09/04/2016 12:37

I have a Vauxhall insignia estate which I absolutely love. Drives lovely and looks sexy. If I win the lottery though I shall have a monster truck.
