Re Ice Cream?

I'm after some advice from you all. I went for an ice cream today and ordered a cornet with a flake.

The woman behind the counter took payment from me and then after handling the money grabbed the cornet, filled it with ice cream and then stuck a flake in the cornet with her bare hands. The only part she didn't touch with her unwashed hands was the ice cream!

This is in a place with a 5* hygiene rating. Surely this can't be normal?

I have severe germ phobic tendencies (OCD) so this may be clouding my judgement. I didn't say anything in case I was being unreasonable but next time I think I might try another ice cream place!

I was in one of those cafeteria places once with a friend and we ere getting our lunch served by a lady who was asked a question by her colleague as she was serving. We sat down to eat and as I scoffed away I noticed my friend hadn't touch hers, as the lady who served us, had "spoken all over it" !

Yes, that's horrible, anyone handling money should not then handle food.

So if you were ordering an ice cream you would wash your hands between handing the money over and taking the ice cream?

squoosh · 04/04/2016 12:22

This wouldn't have even registered with me to be honest.

MackerelOfFact · 04/04/2016 13:21

I wouldn't be bothered by this at all. You do realise that the factories the cones and flakes are manufactured in aren't vacuums? Everything you buy will have been touched at some stage in the production process by human hands and/or been exposed to dust and debris, regardless how stringent hygiene practises are - because humans are biological organisms and air isn't sterile.

If you're genuinely and dangerously immunocompromised it's probably safer just not to buy food of indeterminate origin from vans.

I think you're making a mountain out of a flake-topped molehill.

In one well known garden centre I ordered a hot chocolate with cream and a flake. The woman serving me put the flake on top of the cloth she had been cleaning the counter with.......she was just about to put it on the hot chocolate when she saw my face. She looked at the flake atop of the warm damp cloth and quickly got another, she was full of apologies.
I dread to think what happens behind the scenes, it doesn't bear thinking about.

I reckon we just need to try not to think about these things too much, or never eat out or buy an ice cream or do anything really.

Having said that, I did boak a bit privately to myself when the teenager serving us at a kiosk on a recent outing kept touching her nose, then touching the dc's waffles etc. Disposable gloves probably wouldn't have helped much though.
