AIBU?

To think that shops and pubs are no place for dogs?

We went to the pub for dinner last night. It is a naice pub with a good menu. When we walked in at about 7.30pm there was a cacophony of barking because at least four dogs, owned by different people, had decided to "play," with each other.

This afternoon we were shopping at a little retail park. Lots of little handbag type dogs were being paraded round. One woman even let her two dogs walk all over the rugs on display.

Aibu to think that they shouldn't be there? Why can't the dogs be left at home. Obviously these weren't guide dogs, just pets.

Twowrongs we had the same issue with dh being grassed up on a pub route, she refused to go past the door as that's where they always stopped off.

Depends on the type of pub I think. Our local pub is set on fields, heading towards country side and lots of walkers as well as locals go to the pub. They are dog friendly and dogs can be inside. It's a pub which serves food as well as going there for drinks.

However the dogs are never noisy or roaming. The owners of the dogs have them sat or laid under their tables and I can t remember hearing any of them barking or being noisy.

The pub owners have a tiny old dog who does wander around but he is tiny and doesn't get in anyone's way or cause any issues at all.

And I speak as someone who doesn't rally 'do' dogs st all but I am happy with the way things are it our local.

However some types of pubs would not be the right kind of place for dogs. And in bit sure dogs should really ever be in shops either unless they're working dogs. But then I don't think over ever seen dogs in shops; round here they get tied up outside and owners go inside on their own.

As an asthmatic who is very allergic to dogs I appreciate having places where they are not welcome due to wanting to breath.

I am glad they are generally not allowed in shops. Never seen one on a plane - worries me that I could end up sat next to one.

I don't think that my long term chronic illness should prevent me going out to restaurants because others want dogs with them though.

It would be commercial suicide for a pub or independent shop around me to not make dogs very welcome!
Even most of the restaurants have at least a few tables where you can sit with a dog, if not a whole section.

I'm very fortunate to live in an area known for having lots of independent shops, and I guess they know their customers better than the chains do.
My local butcher not only allows dogs in, but gives me free bones for them. My local toy shop has a resident sausage dog who all children seem to adore, my local hairdresser has a resident lab who sleeps most of the time but is also used to distract wriggly children who won't sit still for their hair cut.

Ddogs love their pub visits and are catnip to drunk people with bar snacks Wink

Also, there is a great app called Doggity, which tells you were your nearest dog-friendly pub is, and how good the food is.
Useful for dog haters as well...
And Pets Pyjamas lists all the dog friendly hotels and b&bs

Of all the mammals on the planet why are humans so convinced that they have the most right to it? I've never understood it.

This!

Assuming you don't live in the west country op? Most village pubs allow dogs where we are.

Dont live rurally at all but where we are there are tons of dog friendly shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs.. even hairdressers Smile

We live rurally and all the local pubs welcome dogs.

Of course they need to sit quietly but a country pub wouldn't be the same without a few dogs lounging around.

Urgh, no to dogs in pubs or shops. But then, I'm really not a dog person, they just piss me off and they are just all slobbery and smelly! Don't get it at all.

They aren't all slobbery and smelly.
That's just a silly thing to say.

I feel sad for people that don't know a dogs love. You are missing out on so much.

Happy i dont live in some of these areas mentioned as couldnt go out for a meal or browse the shops, i am allergic to dogs and like another poster said floating dog hair is a problem, i sneeze on the bus and can tell dog owners as no matter how hard you try, dog hair can get everywhere.
Sure they should be some pet friendly places but wanting all pubs and shops is ridiculous and unfair.

flirty
No one is demanding all shops and pubs must allow dogs, but it is a commercial decision for businesses to make.
My local pubs have decided that they gain far more custom by allowing dogs than they lose from dog allergy sufferers or clean freaks
And as long as the business is obeying the relevant laws, anything it does after that, including having a resident dog, is their commercial decision to make.
On the other side of it, Eurostar has decided that it gains more by being dog-free so doesn't allow dogs on their trains.
It's a commercial decision
