My DD who is 3 has been having stomach/bowel problems for the last year. Diagnose as constipation. She can not pass a stool for weeks despite fantastic diet and laxatives and weeks is in severe pain most days. She is very petite and skinny but her stomach has swollen to look 9 months pregnant. Getting no where with doctors/hospital etc.
Aibu to think this is not how a heathy child's stomach should look.

This is not a priority but in time and if your initial complaint letter gets you nowhere please consider a complaint to the GMC www.gmc-uk.org/mobile/9471 (general medical council).

If nothing else the doctor may start treating you with more seriousness.

I wouldn't generally advocate such a step but i work for a different regulator and sometimes a complaint to us gets the professional moving (even through gritted teeth).

op was this the same consultant your dd can't see again until August?
Did you write and ask that he correct his error in stating her age etc?

"When we saw consultant he kept saying to me 'she turns 2 soon...' But she was going to turn 3 but he had 2 in his head. Then when I got letter from him he had her down as 11kg 92cm and 22 months old. So it was plotted incorrectly and warning sign missed.
She was 34 months at the time."

WellErrr · 31/03/2016 10:53

Hope your app went well.

Ratbagcatbag · 31/03/2016 11:06

How did the appointment go? Hopefully better than some of the previous ones you've had there.

Sukistjames · 31/03/2016 11:21

I've been following the thread but haven't posted before now. Just wanted to say I hope you get some answers today and things move forward for you. Thanks

MEgirl · 31/03/2016 11:23

Are you anywhere near North London. I can recommend a brilliant paediatric gastroenterologist. Tried to PM you but it doesn't work.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 31/03/2016 11:34

Oh OP you're poor little girl.

I start feeling horrible if I miss a daily poo, I can't imagine how she is feeling.

I think now is the time for A&E. Flowers

How embarrassing Blush

This has been such a worrying thread, I really hope the OP gets some satisfactory treatment for her DD.

I just want to add that there has been some brilliant advice & support given on here from some of you, I do feel that you have given her the confidence to face up the medical professionals.

Sorry haven't updated sooner.
Gp examined her and said her tummy feels nice and soft and she feels she doesn't need to be in hospital as she will be more comfortable at home and her temp is normal and she is not vomiting.
Said to continue with the movicol adding the Senna at bedtimes.

As for the referral, she doesn't think they can refer directly to the specialist and that consultant has to do that.
But she is speaking to a colleague and if it can be done it will be done and will call me and are going to speak to continence nurse and get her do refer for whatever is in her power.

Has sent through a note that she needs to be seen as an urgent case for investigation due to all the symptoms and growth dropping off.

Have spoken to dp and Sheffield would be the best place for us to see a specialist.

On sachet 4 now. She's passing a fair bit of wind. Hope this is a sign that things are getting going.
Thinking of giving the Senna now?

Unfortunately lack of update isn't due to her getting treatment it's due to being knee deep in washing and dirty dishes, I've been a bit lapse because of what's been going on in the last few days.
Makes everything feel much worse, I'm a messy house, messy head kind of person.
Can't think straight until everything is in order

Headofthehive55 · 31/03/2016 11:58

It's a good sign if her tummy is nice and soft and she's passing wind! Let's hope something is imminent!

I found a referral to the dietitians were very helpful with a child who didn't grow very well.

Well done this morning, however I'd be booking the private appointment now

Imnotaslimjim · 31/03/2016 12:03

I'd advise leaving the Senna until tonight as it take a few hours to get through the system, and usually if you take it at bedtime, you see results the following morning

Her passing wind is a great sign, it does mean things are moving in the right direction. Once she feels the urge to go, get her to put her feet on the seat of the toilet if she can, it straightens the bowel out and she'll move more with each go

BumbleNova · 31/03/2016 12:09

littlemaemae - I had similar symptoms to your DD as a child and I also got a negative for coeliac. I have now been successfully diagnosed as a coeliac an adult - the blood test can be unreliable. i was also tiny and failed to thrive (2st 10 aged 7!) and also got rubbish care... until I could finally afford private health care in my 30s. you are doing the right thing, stick at it.

Verbena37 · 31/03/2016 12:16

I agree with Vague. The v shape doesn't appear normal and my DD chronic constipation for about ten years and was on one Movicol sachet a day.

With Movicol, you can give more sachets for two or three days until the impact ion has gone then reduce until you're one a day but if they have had it for a while, they need to stay on one a day to make sure their poos stay soft. Then they can gradually wean off that one a day slowly.

However, it does sound like a blockage and your DD, I think, should be taken to A and E....especially if she is in pain and screaming. Something doesn't seem normal. Don't worry about taking her. And yes, take the photos as well.

SirVixofVixHall · 31/03/2016 12:23

I agree with pps that the blood test for coeliac is unreliable. I have a coeliac friend with two coeliac dds and one of them tested neg on the blood test, it was established once she had a biopsy.

ImNotThatGirl · 31/03/2016 12:25

Poor little one. I agree with Senna right before bed. It works best that way. I found it causes cramps otherwise.

Twinkie1 · 31/03/2016 12:42

Bloody hell, I've read all your posts and understand where your head is. You must be in pieces watching your little one in so much pain.

Going private will be the best option. They will run the whole gamut of tests and then you can be treated for whatever they find on the NHS.

If it helps write a timeline for when you see the consultant with what treatment you have had so far, who you have seen and how her growth has dropped off. I found with DS who had dreadful throat issues that going in prepared and not having to sit there thinking if answers to questions really helped.

Good luck, you're a great mum doing your upmost.

Headofthehive55 · 31/03/2016 12:48

You are doing really well getting so much movicol into her!

QuimReaper · 31/03/2016 13:19

Just caught up on this and wanted to say well done to you for powering on when you find it so hard, OP. You'll get there in the end, you're doing brilliantly!

HairyWorm · 31/03/2016 13:27

I've been following this thread since yesterday and I just wanted to say you're doing amazingly OP. You've held it together and made rational decisions regarding your daughter's care despite not feeling like you can cope. I take my hat off to you.
I hope the poo fairy makes a grand entrance very soon .
