My DD who is 3 has been having stomach/bowel problems for the last year. Diagnose as constipation. She can not pass a stool for weeks despite fantastic diet and laxatives and weeks is in severe pain most days. She is very petite and skinny but her stomach has swollen to look 9 months pregnant. Getting no where with doctors/hospital etc.
Aibu to think this is not how a heathy child's stomach should look.

Well done Mae, just keep going now. AS PP said, if nothing moves tonight you may need to consider A&E but well done for getting her going on it

fraggle84 · 30/03/2016 19:14

Get her to a&e

cakeycakeface · 30/03/2016 19:15

I just can't believe what I'm reading. Really. It's so frightening parents get this. She's a tiny wee thing. I had to take iron supplements during both my pregnancies. I could manage labour without drugs but I found it very hard to deal with the discomfort those iron tablets have me. And she's so small. SadThanks

Wafflenose · 30/03/2016 19:18

I have read the whole thread, and am shocked. You have been badly let down by your GP, and I can't believe the nurse was prepared to watch and wait. Your poor dd :( This can't go on, and her usual treatment hasn't worked - I'd get your partner to take her to A & E if he is able to be really assertive. She could get a lot sicker if left like this.

Sallystyle · 30/03/2016 19:20

Will you take her to A&E if she is no better tomorrow?

I understand that you want to give this a chance to work, but please take her tomorrow if nothing is better. Impacted to the ribs really can not be left much longer.

littlemaemae · 30/03/2016 19:23

If she gets worse at any point, fever, sickness, a bout of pain I will take her to a&e

Have now done 4
She's starting to feel small cramps and is needing to sit on toilet but nothing is coming out. Well the skin of a pea has found its way out somehow.
Should that have been digested?

This has really upset me, she has been let down and needs urgent care. op you are a fantastic mum trying so hard for your dd x

Pizdets · 30/03/2016 19:24

OP I'm so sorry to hear your daughter is suffering. I don't have any advice but wanted to lend some support. Our DS was ill with a 'mystery illness' for a year. He was sick every day and we bounced between the GP, hv and hospital trying all kinds of meds etc.

The feeling of being lost in the system is just awful and so stressful, wanting to advocate for your child and desperately wanting to do the right thing but not knowing how best to do it is the most soul destroying thing that happened to me. We did eventually get a diagnosis at the beginning of the year. He had an op and is now back to full health, the relief is incredible and his quality of life has improved no end. I had the same worries as you with regards to him being 'not as ill as the other kids' on the children's ward - I just wanted to say that your DD deserves a quality of life and she deserves to live without pain, to enjoy food and to have energy. Please don't feel she doesn't deserve those things because she's not totally incapacitated - now DS is better it seems horrific that we lived with him being so ill for so long. I hope for all of you that you can get her some help soon.

IwillrunIwillfly · 30/03/2016 19:24

Glad the nurse (eventually) came round to understanding what you've been through and is going to help. Sounds like you're doing great with the movicol, and warm baths can help them relax to let the poo out! You're doing great for your dd, and you've done so well speaking out on her behalf.

Goingtobeawesome · 30/03/2016 19:25

Different circumstances but my DD was left without proper care because I had PND and they said I was an over anxious mummy Angry. I didn't know what was wrong but I knew something was.

Please go very soon.

Imnotaslimjim · 30/03/2016 19:26

No, vegetable skins can't be digested, they provide roughage. Hopefully you'll see some results soon. Have you any vaseline? I'm wondering if dabbing a little on her anus will help it pass? I know the first bit will be quite wet but the impaction will be quite solid

Headofthehive55 · 30/03/2016 19:26

I feel for you. Getting movicol into a child can be difficult. And of course it can't work if it's not in her.

Bungleboggs · 30/03/2016 19:26

This may sound disgusting but when my ds was constipated Vaseline round his bum did help when it started to shift

Auntieclimax · 30/03/2016 19:27

OP I've lurked until now, and was really hoping I would come back this afternoon and find the continence nurse was an angel in disguise and things would have been quickly moving forward for you and your DD.

I'm disgusted to read how you've been treated, yet again. And you probably don't have the energy right now, but at some point you need to be making a complaint against your GP. What is the issue with referring? What has he got to lose? I really don't understand! My DD had a medical issue, not the same as your DD, and even though my GP didn't think it was anything to worry about, she said she would rather refer to someone more specialised in the area just for them to cast their eyes over her to be sure. Surely that's what a good GP does?

I think if and when you are ready to make a complaint then there are plenty of people on here who can help you formulate a letter to the practice to start the ball rolling. Not saying you can't do it yourself, but sometimes when we are upset it's great to have someone there supporting us and help put what we want say onto paper.

In the mean time, I'm just going to echo what pretty much everyone else is saying which is get her to A and E.

Headofthehive55 · 30/03/2016 19:31

Perhaps you could ring the continence nurse again tomorrow if no result?

Headofthehive55 · 30/03/2016 19:34

You are doing really well with four sachets! How many is your target tonight?

littlemaemae · 30/03/2016 19:35

Continence nurse's manager is calling me tomorrow to check up. So I will stress to her again that things need moving along if nothing has happened.

Gp is giving me Senna in the morning, instead of the pico-- medicine. Is that a fob off too, or just a different name for same product?
I can use that to speed the disimpaction along.

OOH gp gave me some lubricant so will get that on her bum when she is out the bath.

OP posts:
littlemaemae · 30/03/2016 19:40

I'm going to keep it at 4 then as soon as she wakes up tomorrow I can get onto giving her 6, then 8 Friday and daily until she poos water.
I think she will need to go to more than 8 but will see how it goes.
She is usually in bed at 6 because she gets very exhausted but she fell asleep as the nurse was leaving and was out like a light for an hour

blueskyinmarch · 30/03/2016 19:40

I do hope your DD gets some relief soon. It sounds very uncomfortable.

turdfairynomore · 30/03/2016 19:41

I've taught a little girl like this. She misses so much school. And when she was there....she was ashen and miserable. Her mum was fobbed off with more and more movicol until she saved the empty packets over a week and took them with her to a&e! She had over 120 sachets and no movement! A&E were horrified. She was admitted immediately as an emergency. It's been an ongoing issue for her, with multiple admissions but she is starting to improve, though its slow. Please don't leave this!!

Headofthehive55 · 30/03/2016 19:41

No they are different medicines and work in a different way to the movicol.
Neither nice tasting though. So the idea maybe is to try different things to see which works for you and your DD. Glad the nurse is ringing you back in the morning. It can seem a lonely road at times. What works for one might not work for another.

VagueIdeas · 30/03/2016 19:45

You know, I'm also going to contradict what the nurse said about Movicol needing tone mixed with 60mls of water otherwise it isn't as effective.

A consultant told me that you could mix a sachet into a really small amount of water - like an egg cup full - and leave until it's dissolved and "syrupy". This can then be mixed into whatever foodstuff you can think of - jelly, home made ice pops, yoghurt, etc.

Also, from extensive personal experience Wink I can tell you that I never accurately measure out my DD's Movicol. Sometimes it goes into less water (squash) than required, but usually it's more. It's never been a problem.

So do bear that in mind when you're trying to get large quantities into your DD.

MissBeaHaving · 30/03/2016 19:47

VagueIdeas that's what we were also told, I mixed Ds up with a small amount then blitzed it in with his milkshake, it worked for him.

pupsiecola · 30/03/2016 19:49

I still maintain that all these different medicines are just going to turn her insides to slush and leave her even more bloated, aren't they? Surely they need to look at what's going on at the other end?

So sorry you are going through this. If it were my child I'd be at A&E now.

Badders123 · 30/03/2016 19:49

If this was my child I would be going to a and e and not moving until they sorted her out.
They would NEVER leave an adult impacted up to their rib cage!
Why should children who are non verbal and powerless have to suffer!
I also think you have been given some very dangerous advice by a hcp who doesn't know her job!
I'm so sorry op, you must be beside yourself!
Where are you?
I'll bloody go with you if you are near me!
