AIBU to say no to holidaying in Turkey?

He found a weeks all inclusive holiday for the 5 of us at the end of May in a hotel with awesome water slides and great reviews...

..its just me who feels anxious and I cannot explain why. I guess i am nervous about Isis and how unsafe the world feels at the moment.

I think I might be being utterly ridiculous. Would you book a family holiday abroad at the moment? Is there anywhere you just wouldn't want to go to?

Yes I'd book a family holiday. Depends on which part of Turkey though tbh. I'd travel to most places as long as it wasn't advised not to travel there.

No I wouldn't go to Turkey in the current political climate. Even if it was free. Why take to risk when you can go elsewhere?

We are visiting lykia world in September in turkey (olu deniz) it is over 7 hours from ankara and we fly to a military airport and it's a gated complex . My thoughts are, terrorism is everywhere now . On our doorstep , I am actually more concerned about flying from Birmingham airport.

I absolutely would not be holidaying anywhere on that side of Europe at the moment, still would probably get some good deals if you are happy to take the risk, it's personal choice and you would probably be absolutely fine but I would still not be comfortable.

I'm going to Turkey in May, close to Olu Deniz which is hours away from the Syrian border and 300/400 miles from Ankara and Istanbul where the recent suicide bombing happened.

I would be more scared on a day trip to London tbh. If there had been suicide bombings in London would it stop you from holidaying in Cornwall or Scotland? The Turkish holiday resorts haven't had any attacks.

I personally wouldn't travel to Turkey, Egypt, Morocco etc at the moment. I have visited and loved all of these countries in the past (especially Turkey where I have probably spent sbout 12 weeks travelling around in total). We have just booke a holiday in Europe and I expect I will feel a bit nervous at the airport in the uk.

yanbu I know and agree with all the arguments for not letting the atrocities cloud views and actions but when DH did a similar thing finding great deal hols one going up the Nile and one in Turkey I was a bit 'hmm not sure I fancy it' ..... we are going to greece.

I live in London. Despite what Donald Trump and Katie Hopkins would have us believe we are not some terrified, ghettoised city, I feel safe here, while remaining realistic that of course there will be some attacks being planned, most of which will be foiled. I'd feel slightly more worried about Turkey but that's probably silly and yes on balance I would go. But yanbu if you don't want to go. Your choice.

I think the tourist resorts would be absolutely fine. My sister has to travel into Istanbul most days to work.

Whilst I don't envy her. She doesn't live in fear.

I wouldn't go to Turkey personally, but that's because of Cyprus not terrorism.

Fair enough that several PP would and are going. I agree that our assessment of risk is often poor, and that we can generally overreact to these kinds of things.

But if you're not comfortable, you're not exactly going to enjoy the holiday. And there are loads of other options to choose from.

My DH and I are seasoned travellers and were thinking of going to Morocco in May, but had similar reservations. Ultimately, I think the risk of a terrorist attack happening while we're there is probably similar to the risk in London, other places in Western Europe, etc. But we felt on balance we'd probably be a bit nervous while there - especially when you consider combining the risk with the relative unfamiliarity of the country, culture and support systems if something were to happen. Think we will opt for Greece instead. Silly? Probably, but I feel more comfortable about it.

We went last summer to a remote place on the south coast. I did feel a bit anxious when we went to Bodrum for the day.
The holiday company, a Turkish specialist, has gone out of business as so many tourists are giving Turkey a wide birth. Must be awful for the people who rely on tourism.
On reflection I probably would go again but have good travel insurance and keep an eye on the FCO website

We are going to Side in Turkey in july, and to put it into perspective the terror Alert status for the UK is currently classed as 'Severe' whilst Turkey is classed as 'High'.
TBH I know where I'd rather hedge my bets.

I returned from Turkey 2 weeks ago. It was fine no hint of trouble only in Ankara the capital. Then its Kurdish n Turkey . Although plane held 181 only 80 pax on board. Turkish tourism is really suffering no Russians,very few Europeans

I wouldn't travel to Turkey or Egypt at the moment. It's a personal choice but the world is a big place and I think there are safer places to go. I've also refused to go anywhere with Zika this year which has given us a right headache in terms of where to go. We've settled on Dubai, in August, where I suspect we will be sunburnt to death.

I wouldn't spend my money in a country where women are treated so abominably and where the government is actively seeking to worsen their plight.

SImon Calder was on BBC breakfast the other day talking about what fantastic deals you can get on holidays in Turkey at the moment. He said South Africa was the most dangerous place to go to for a holiday at the moment.

Thanks everyone else. I know my feeling that places such as Spain are more secure is probably completely batshit but I still feel it.

Awful news this morning about the hijacking

Not sure if you thought of this but last time i went on holiday which was last year (so some time before recent events) my insurance said i wasnt covered for turkey (i wasnt going, no plans too but guy on phone bought it up several times that the insurance didnt cover turkey) so something to look into prior to booking.

DD is on a school trip to France - I am more concerned by the London airport - that said I'm sure the security has been beefed up - not that it wasn't secure before!

These people are striking a random places - so could be anywhere.

I think the Turkish did themselves proud in protecting the British and it shouldn't be forgotten

We just moved a family holiday from a similar resort in turkey to Spain. Not rational, but if you aren't going to relax, why go? I feel v sorry for the Turkish people whose livelihoods are being decimated - apparently 1500 Turkish hotels are up for sale - and angry that the terrorists have got to me. But they have.

For the record, I would go with friends/DP. It's taking a 6 month old that made me nervous. We will also have a 7 and a 10 year old with us - those sick isis fuckers think that's marriageable age. It just made me too nervous
