To find my family a bit common and embarrassing

Or am I just pretentious?

They love the cakes at pat Valarie and go on about them. When I think these are vile made off site factory cakes that are frozen.

They played the sam smith album and went on about how good his voice is and all that. Sounds like music for people that dont like music IMO.

They are wolfing down cadburys chocolate saying how delicious it is. Over sweet waxy stuff - give me Mr Roth any day.

I just don't feel on the same level as them. Really average lives and I just have nothing in common with them.

Patisserie Valerie is a constant disappointment. But then I grew up eating petit gateaux for special occasions from an award winning chocolaterie/patisserie in Bordeaux and believing that the only proper macaroon comes from st emillion. I still stand by those beliefs Grin.

Life is too short to get hung up on things. We are all different and we all have different tastes. The world would be pretty boring otherwise. Never forget your roots. Those people you disparage are those who brought you up and gave you the opportunities to discover the things you enjoy today.

findingmyfeet12 · 27/03/2016 13:27

What is PIV?

findingmyfeet12 · 27/03/2016 13:28

Oh I just understood Blush

Magicpaintbrush · 27/03/2016 13:29

OP - I would be less concerned about whether your family members are 'common' and much more concerned about how judgemental and unpleasant you sound. Nobody is perfect, and by the sounds of it that includes you.

MissusWrex · 27/03/2016 13:29

You're Percy from the Barry Potter books aren't you?

USERNAME213 · 27/03/2016 13:29

I don't understand why those likes make them "common". Are you royalty and therefore liking patisserie Valerie isn't your usual cake stop? Is this a fake wind up thread?

MissusWrex · 27/03/2016 13:29

*Harry 😂

Lanark2 · 27/03/2016 13:41

Actually though my heart sinks when I realise that as a nation we are starting to believe that utter shit is premium because we are being told it is. Its constantly embarrassing to me that we see powdered hot chocolate from Costa as premium, when it's just crappy packet stuff, that we think PV stuff is artisan cakes because the brand name machines have pushed real craft cake makers out, and then out of laziness, we buy them just because they are there, so these brands think that people want them. Its everywhere, people being spoon fed crap, so much that they can't see possibilities outside it. When people are going to nightclubs and feeling excited because an 80s Abba track cones on that hasn't been played in the last few weeks in the same shit 80s mix that they think is popular because of heart FM without realising that the only reason heart FM play it is because they want listeners of a certain age, and don't give a shit. People aren't choosing. They are just passive.

It is depressing when someone you know says 'for a treat, let's go to wetherspoons'. For me it's like remind ING yourself that you are already dead, and helping with that process. It IS cringy.

dadwithadaughter · 27/03/2016 13:41

I think you are playing with us.

Lanark2 · 27/03/2016 13:42

So ner.

findingmyfeet12 · 27/03/2016 13:49

Lanark - I fear you are overthinking.

People like popular things because often they are tried and tested. There are people out there who don't have the time or inclination to seek out the obscure because they are satisfied with what they know and have other priorities in life.

Sophia1984 · 27/03/2016 13:51

Does it matter? They're family, and if they provide you with love and support that's all that matters and it's a damn sight more than a lot of people on here have

-wolfs down the Cadbury's egg my mum bought me at age 32-

kali110 · 27/03/2016 13:57

I hate sam smith and Cadbury ( except for a creme egg) but i certainly wouldn't think i am better or that others are common if they do Confused

Lanark2 although i don't like how costa make their hot chocolate, i'd still take theirs anyday than some fancy ones i have had.
Chocolate syrup does not make a good hot chocolate, which is is all the fancier resturants and cafes seem to use, and don't get me started on what they think are exceptable standards of milk froth.
( i will admit to being a coffee and milk snob after making them for a decade Easter Grin )

ilovesooty · 27/03/2016 14:04

Going to Wetherspoons is like reminding yourself you're already dead?

Confused
BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 27/03/2016 14:08

None of the things you describe make someone "common". But being critical of them makes you rather common and very unsympathetic.

Now, sitting in the living-room in your pants, and to not bother getting properly dressed when family members visit because "it's my home": that's common. Hello my brother-in-law

Lanark2 · 27/03/2016 14:22

No..thinking going to wetherspoons for a gourmet eating experience is depressing not just going because you can't be arsed(mind you I find that very similar)

Its true that once you kind of realise how much crap is sholveled around by brand names and how poor and dull the quality is, it is depressing when people treat it as if it's craft made by artisans. Don't get me wrong, I can eat a vienetta, but I'm not mistaken that it's delicious in a master chocolatier way.

scalliondays · 27/03/2016 14:23

Laughing at you brother in law bitter - does he not even put a string vest on?

MissusWrex · 27/03/2016 14:27

Wetherspoons isn't for gourmet eating at all in my town?

It's just generally associated with the alcoholics in there early in the morning.

BobbyGentry · 27/03/2016 14:29

let go; it's a reflection on them; disengage.

To find my family a bit common and embarrassing
Lanark2 · 27/03/2016 14:37

You do know these hippy avoidance quotes aren't fact, don't you!?

BeaufortBelle · 27/03/2016 14:38

I've googled Sam Smith and am none the wiser as to whether he's good or bad. There's nothing wrong with a filter coffee for £1 in Weatherspoons in my local town. We could pay £2.70 in Costa or Starbucks for something no better. DH and I had coffee there on Saturday.

ouryve · 27/03/2016 14:40

Nothing more embarrassing than a family member who is so above it all.

Unless you are willing to treat said family to naice cake and so on, you need to stfu whinging and eye rolling.

Lanark2 · 27/03/2016 14:42

Sigh.. That's so depressing on so many levels. Wetherspoons coffee is made with a low concentration mix by machine, and is much worse than Costa etc, but you are still comparing brand name with brand name and limiting your understand withing the same world.

TheDevilMadeMeDoIt · 27/03/2016 14:46

As another poster said on the pudding thread, I read too much Jilly Cooper at an impressionable age. I therefore declare myself an expert.
OP, you do realise that the fact you care makes you terribly lower middle class don't you? The upper classes wouldn't give a stuff, you are allowed to do whatever you want.
I find you terribly common, embarrassing and pretentious. However I like your family.

Lanark2 · 27/03/2016 14:47

Or... you like Wetherspoons haha
