To find my family a bit common and embarrassing

Or am I just pretentious?

They love the cakes at pat Valarie and go on about them. When I think these are vile made off site factory cakes that are frozen.

They played the sam smith album and went on about how good his voice is and all that. Sounds like music for people that dont like music IMO.

They are wolfing down cadburys chocolate saying how delicious it is. Over sweet waxy stuff - give me Mr Roth any day.

I just don't feel on the same level as them. Really average lives and I just have nothing in common with them.

There has been a common denominator on here recently with posters that use 'of' instead of 'have'.

Orda1 · 27/03/2016 12:12

I'm agog that Cadbury is considered embarrassing, who the fuck doesn't like Cadbury?

AppleSetsSail · 27/03/2016 12:14

I have special fondness for PV, having breakfasted there many times in the noughties when my kids were babies it was one of only a handful of options in my Knightsbridge neighbourhood.

Times have moved on, there are many more interesting restaurants along Brompton road these days.

If PV/Sam Smith represent the range of their interests, then I understand your point (although you've made it clumsily). I have the opposite 'problem', my family tends to be relentlessly culture-seeking and that can prove tedious - try visiting Rome or Cairo with frustrated archaeologists.

ilovesooty · 27/03/2016 12:17

Of course Buzzard Smile

I've given up reporting this particular GF after I received my most recent email about it from MNHQ.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 27/03/2016 12:26

Eh? What's wrong with popular stuff? Surely by definition most people like it?

Personally I'd rather see people enjoying themselves instead of moaning. The default setting in my family is to sneer and belittle at others choices and it doesn't make you feel better about yourself but it's hard to resist the social conditioning.

I make a conscious effort to find the positive in things. It makes me a happier person Smile

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 27/03/2016 12:29

I agree about Cadbury's chocolate though. That is nasty since they changed the recipe but I can't get het up about other people enjoying stuff.

You only live once so stop being a miserable fucker... you'll live longer Easter Wink

SooBee61 · 27/03/2016 12:37

I think this is a wind-up.

I like Cadbury's (Dairy Milk only though), not keen on Sam Smith and wish we had a Patisserie Valerie branch in our market town so I could try it. No idea where the nearest one is!

It's easy to sneer at others' tastes. My friend used to have an Elvis mirror and a picture print of a village church with a real working clock. Used to chuckle inwardly but would never comment!

greenbloom · 27/03/2016 12:38

I agree with posters who say that being relentlessly tasteful is much more tiring. My most favourite relatives are ones who happily tuck into quality street at Christmas and meet up for lunch at a Harvester. But that is because they are laid back and great fun to chat with. Other relatives are somewhat obsessed by the labels on what they will and will not eat/wear. It's just not as relaxed with them.

ijustwannadance · 27/03/2016 12:40

I've just had to google Pat Valerie as I have never heard of it. There is one about 3 miles from my house in town centre. I never knew. Although it is in the posh bit of town so I would have no reason whatsoever to venture there. Being so common an all.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 27/03/2016 12:45

I like naice chocolate too OP, and interesting music!
Happy Easter Easter Smile

Queenie73 · 27/03/2016 12:48

I don't actually know who Sam Smith is, does that mean that for once in my life I can consider myself sophisticated? Or am I just tired to the point of being oblivious? The second one seems more likely!

SurferJet · 27/03/2016 12:51

I really like Sam Smith < wipes nose on sleeve >

228agreenend · 27/03/2016 12:54

I guess i'm common as muck, then!

Please can OP. Enlighten me as to what music if should be listening to, and what brand of Easster egg imshould be consuming? I obviously need educating.

RichardHead · 27/03/2016 12:54

DH has a t shirt with "I listen to bands that don't even exist yet" slogan on. I think it was from threadless if you're interested op?

He does still listen to some very obscure bands, I gave up though on the arrival of kids. I even watched The Voice last night while chomping on some Cadbury's.

My 15 year old Sylvia Plath reading, Manics listening self would hate me so much these days, but, meh.

AyeAmarok · 27/03/2016 12:55

You're obviously very insecure.

I suspect they have more money than you so you're desperate to be the 'classy' one by putting them done.

findingmyfeet12 · 27/03/2016 12:58

I'm considered common by my family. My dh and I don't have the money that my siblings have and they also have more "cerebral" tastes.

Having said that we have the kind of relationship where we discuss this openly and all have a laugh about it. They think no less of us (although we often envy their lives, homes, etc).

Feilin · 27/03/2016 13:00

I like hotel chocolat and I ordered a fancy smancy one off designed cake for hubs 40th almost two yrs ago but ordinarily he gets a tesco choc cake and I'm not adverse to lowering myself to a bit of cadburys or galaxy out of the local spar.. As for music I like Sam smith but also walk the moon and dare I say it sometimes "posh" music as I've a friend in the Copenhagen orchestra . Am I pretentious ? Likely, do I care? No. Do I care what my family like? No.

ghostyslovesheep · 27/03/2016 13:04

I am partial to a Sayer's veggie sausage roll - but then I am as common as muck

findingmyfeet12 · 27/03/2016 13:09

I've never heard of Sam Smith Blush

I don't live in the uk but I always have a greggs pasty when I visit (for old times sake).

My family visit obscure galleries and museums and listen to opera while I like a day out at a theme park and love a good car boot sale Blush

BillSykesDog · 27/03/2016 13:15

Outed!!

To find my family a bit common and embarrassing
Lanark2 · 27/03/2016 13:18

I understand this, though she could of put it better. I have a fondness for PIV too, but I do know that there are other places you can go that are better.

ShatnersBassoon · 27/03/2016 13:21
