To find my family a bit common and embarrassing

Or am I just pretentious?

They love the cakes at pat Valarie and go on about them. When I think these are vile made off site factory cakes that are frozen.

They played the sam smith album and went on about how good his voice is and all that. Sounds like music for people that dont like music IMO.

They are wolfing down cadburys chocolate saying how delicious it is. Over sweet waxy stuff - give me Mr Roth any day.

I just don't feel on the same level as them. Really average lives and I just have nothing in common with them.

Anyone with any sense would go to Wetherspoons for coffee if the alternative is paying nearly three times as much in Costa.

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2016 15:01

Is this the same OP that thinks Chloe Madeley has an amazing body? Grin

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 27/03/2016 15:04

There is nothing wrong with Wetherspoons. But it's not a gourmet eating establishment. What Lanark is trying to say is the depressing thing is when people believe it IS a gourmet eating experience. Because it really isn't, but that doesn't mean you can't like it, or you shouldn't go there. Just accept it for what it is.

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2016 15:06

Wetherspoons are horrible, I steer well clear. But I don't think they are meant for me. Grin

SurferJet · 27/03/2016 15:09

I doubt there's a single person in the country who'd think wetherspoons is a gourmet eating experience.

MLGs · 27/03/2016 15:11

Sorry not RTFT. These are very superficial things about your family that you have picked on, OP. Choices about cakes, music and chocolate don't really define someone one way or the other. I could say I had masses in common with someone, like two peas in a pod, and still disagree about these sort of minor things.

That's aside from it not being very nice to call someone common.

ilovesooty · 27/03/2016 15:11

Surfer absolutely.

Lanark2 · 27/03/2016 15:14

Weird, you are using a class hammer to attack someone for snobbery.

That is messed up

MrsJayy · 27/03/2016 15:15

Who thinks weatherspoons is gourmet nobody i know its cheap pub grub we all understand what a weatherspoons is

Lanark2 · 27/03/2016 15:16

Why is is 'always more sensible ' to buy the cheapest option regardless of the quality/price relationship (not to mention intangibles and behavioural gains) if the were really true, anyone with any sense would have soda water, or nothing.

lavenderhoney · 27/03/2016 15:17

Im sure they love you popping round to turn up your nose at them, op. And they must all draw straws to have your company at Christmas.

ilovesooty · 27/03/2016 15:19

I don't accept that Costa is worth paying nearly three times as much for. I might be persuaded to spend that money in an independent shop but not at Costa when Wetherspoons is an alternative.

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2016 15:19

OP has flounced apparently. Maybe gone to Wetherspoons?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 27/03/2016 15:21

Why do people assume that, just because THEY don't know anyone who does XYZ, in this case, think Wetherspoons is a gourmet treat, that NO ONE could possibly know anyone who thinks that? Lanark has said he knows people who think that, is he therefore lying?

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2016 15:26

Someone somewhere must think Wetherspoons is a gourmet treat. i don't know them though. Grin

ouryve · 27/03/2016 15:27

Wetherspoons is cheap, predictable, ergo "safe" food. The sort of food you eat because you are out, rather than go out to eat.

I had no idea PV existed until one opened opposite bhs, a few months ago. I probably won't sample it, mainly because almost all of the many indie cafes in town are much, much cheaper.

Chinesealan · 27/03/2016 15:32

Funny Wetherspoons is getting a bashing here. If you were to say Harvester or any number of pubs and chains I would agree wholeheartedly but I have to stand up for Wetherspoons.
.
Traditionally they were for drunks etc and certain of them still attract them because drinks are cheap. That said to my mind there are many reasons to go to a Wetherspoons than other similar chains.

Often newer ones are based in beautiful and beautifully renovated old buildings.

The wine lists are shortish and very good; reliable big brands e.g. villa Maria and in some branches Chapel down English wine. In many pubs it's Stowells on tap or bottles with names like Moonflight or Wolf Mist.

Very good choice of beers bottled and on tap.

Food is much better than you imagine it might be. I've had perfectly done Eggs Royale at the Traff Centre one. Good quality sausages, bacon etc for fry up. Buns for hot dogs are a nice brioche. There's always Heinz Ketchup, good quality mustard and other sauces.

Prices are kept low whilst quality isn't compromised.

Staff I've been served by are always had working, friendly and efficient.

To me, Wetherspoons is like Aldi, it's a boon if you know what you're looking for and if you're trapped in a shopping centre full of dull chains you could do a lot worse.

Lanark2 · 27/03/2016 15:34

Wetherspoons becomes gourmet in the sense of ales and guest ciders. Tis true

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 27/03/2016 15:35

I wouldn't say anyone is actively bashing Wetherspoons, just saying it's not gourmet. It's fine for what it is.

whois · 27/03/2016 15:38

Weather spoons isn't gourmet, but their food is reliable and much of it is actually really nice as well as being good value.

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2016 15:50

Lanark started a thread not long ago saying Wetherspoons reminded him of a mens' hostel or something. Doesn't sound gourmet.

Chinesealan · 27/03/2016 15:56

It really depends on the branch sparlingbrook. The new one in Solihull is lovely.

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2016 16:03

I was born in Solihull. Smile Not a huge fan though, haven't been in years and it's a bit far just to look at a Wetherspoons. Grin

MrsJayy · 27/03/2016 16:04

There is a "spoons" in glasgow thats in an old bank building its lovely does ok pub food and cheap drink

Lanark2 · 27/03/2016 16:12

I call Lanark's Law. Any discussion about snobbery or benefits, will inevitably end up being a discussion about wetherspoons
