To find my family a bit common and embarrassing

Or am I just pretentious?

They love the cakes at pat Valarie and go on about them. When I think these are vile made off site factory cakes that are frozen.

They played the sam smith album and went on about how good his voice is and all that. Sounds like music for people that dont like music IMO.

They are wolfing down cadburys chocolate saying how delicious it is. Over sweet waxy stuff - give me Mr Roth any day.

I just don't feel on the same level as them. Really average lives and I just have nothing in common with them.

I find people who write 'should of' instead of 'should have' a bit common OP. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2016 16:15

It does if you start a thread about it Lanark2.

UmbongoUnchained · 27/03/2016 16:17

Love a spoons mixed grill though.

BeaufortBelle · 27/03/2016 16:20

Wonders what a men's hostel is like. Wonders about the experiences of those able to compare. Does it depend on the hestel?

Ihangmyknickersontheline · 27/03/2016 16:50

Never heard of Pat Val but if it's a patisserie I'd love it whatever..and your nickname reminds me of a very annoying 80's song by Wilson Phillips which is now going round in my head!

KathrynL · 27/03/2016 16:52

You sound like such a snotty cow. I'm surprised that your family want anything to do with you if i'm being honest.

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2016 16:54

Patisserie Valerie looks nice

Buzzardbird · 27/03/2016 17:22

Oh, that's weird, where is the OP? I would 'of' thought they would be back to laugh at the common people?

ilovesooty · 27/03/2016 17:24

I doubt she'll be back. Like I said she'll be setting up her next name change for her edgy and controversial contributions.

Buzzardbird · 27/03/2016 17:28

You, of course, are right sooty. Would love to know what the e-mail was you got. I got sick of not being replied to.

hollyisalovelyname · 27/03/2016 18:46

Patisserie Valerie has some delicious cakes. I always pay a visit when in London.
I wish they'd open in Ireland.

Birdsgottafly · 27/03/2016 19:10

I'm off to Pat Val, when the kids are back in school, I've just got a deal in Groupon for their afternoon tea.

Depending on where I am will eat in Weatherspoons, because I know I can get Vegan food.

My ex used to think going to Weatherspoons was 'dining out', as well as other pubs, or he'd settle for a Chinese. Some people are happy as they are and don't want to expand themselves.

ijustwannadance · 27/03/2016 19:13

I don't drink coffee so wouldn't have a clue about different tasting coffee beans, but the machines in Wetherspoons are the same as other coffee shops and they put the fresh beans in machine which grinds for each cup.Confused

Imchangingmyname · 27/03/2016 19:19

Using 'should of' instead of 'should have' is vair common, OP.

HTH.

MelanieCheeks · 27/03/2016 19:21

Pat Val about to open in Belfast, Holly!

I'll be their first customer.

Teddy1970 · 27/03/2016 19:21

I thought when I opened this post that you were going to say your family had been on the Jeremy Kyle show or similar, give over, you've just got different tastes, if they like mainstream chocolate, so what?

hollyisalovelyname · 27/03/2016 20:15

Melanie you are kidding Shock
Where.
Pat Val only 100 miles up the road!!!

hollyisalovelyname · 27/03/2016 20:17

Melanie are Caffe Concerto and Patisserie Valerie run by the same company?

VelvetCushion · 27/03/2016 20:29

I agree with you OP. Ive been called a snob before not in a horrible way but a jokey way. I fully get where you are coming from. My friend thinks im posh buying food in M&S and the fact I will only carry a leather handbag and would NEVER wear plastic shoes.
She thinks Prezzo is posh. I think the Ritz is posh. We both on par financially by the way. She shops in Iceland for her chicken Confused I think thats fucking grim. Shes not poor.

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2016 20:34

OP is long gone....

Kennington · 27/03/2016 20:37

I think the term you are looking for is 'basic' as I was informed by a dodgy guardian article describing someone who likes mainstream stuff.....not entirely sure what it meant but something along the lines of liking sex and the city and pandora. The horror.
cakes are fat sugar and flour so I don't see how they differ and could be called common. Is there a difference between a Victoria sponge and a fruit cake.
My head hurts.

VelvetCushion · 27/03/2016 20:40

I think this is rather funny. Instead of people turning it around into what could have been quite a funny thread there are so many on here that are so serious it has all gone rather Pete Tong. People need to lighten up and have some fun

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2016 20:41

It's not a particularly funny thread. Confused

BeaufortBelle · 27/03/2016 20:45

velvetcushion if I were passing Iceland and it had cheap chicken thighs, Gold Blend, anything else I like on special offer I'd nip in and buy it. I'd call that smart, not grim.

I don't think the Ritz is particularly posh. Nice yes, Expensive yes. But it doesn't have quiet cachet that you only know about if you know about it IYSWIM. I'd no more have teat The Ritz than VP.

AugustaFinkNottle · 27/03/2016 20:48

There's a Wetherspoons in Wales I will positively go out of my way to visit, it does fantastic lamb sausages with mint gravy and mashed potatoes.
