AIBU?

To be utterly brassed off to open new Aways to find they are SCENTED!

I seem to recall another thread about this not long ago - maybe it's still going, I don't know. Anyway - opened a new pack of Always an hour ago, my only pack, only to find they were SCENTED. There was NOTHING on the pack to indicate this and I am SO pissed off! Due to period pain I'm not up to going out again to buy more and will have to do the old fashioned thing tonight and use cloths. I have ONE unscented one left to see me through tomorrow morning.

I am so annoyed about this. I have a Twitter account that I've never used - am even thinking of utilising that to rant about this. Not sure how to go about it as not sure about Twitter.....

There's no way on earth I'm whacking that next to my fanjo.

Bastards.

It wouldn't be such a problem if they put that they were scented on the packet. What do they expect to gain by being so sneaky about it? I can see from this thread alone and I and many others have stopped buying their product as a result. Hopefully enough woman do this for them to notice a drop in their sales and stop this nonsense.

This lady puts it well. Bonus points for the photo:

They really stink. I bought a packet a couple of months ago, used one and the rest are still in my bathroom. You could smell them from the bathroom door for weeks. I'll never buy them again

A few months ago, i emailed the manufacturers of Always, and informed that the smell from their product was so strong that I could literally smell it 3 feet away from the supermarket shelf. I made all the points detailed on here, but to no avail.
Received a voucher for a free pack of Always, plus an email extolling the virtues of actipearls etc etc.
Maybe we should just bombard them with e mails, but the do not appear to be listening.

They aren't scented. They have actipearls. that's what the manufacturer said. Any scent is simply a side effect of the actipearls or some such nonsense.

Report
imwithspud · 27/03/2016 12:27

Well either way, they should do more to explain what these 'actipearls' are and that they may cause a smell to emit from the product which may irritate delicate feminine areas. At least give people the chance to make an informed decision, not have people resort to standing in the sanpro isle of a supermarket sniffing packets.

Always Infinity are not scented and very good.

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 27/03/2016 12:39

The only Always that don't seem to stink of cheap car air freshener and make me want to rip my labia off are the 'sensitive' ones (although tbh I'd have never described myself as sensitive, my bits just don't like being smothered in cheap itchy scent). Picked up a couple of packs in £land before and they're fine. Otherwise its Body Form all the way. Shame, as Always do some great night time towels, especially the ones with 60% extra width at the back.

Ah yes I've used the infinity ones, they are good and definitely no actipearls/scented shite in them. I just resent paying more to avoid an irritated and itchy foof.

I like the ones from Home Bargains, they're called Silk&satin and cost about 79p.

I use either Bodyform or Tesco own brand, neither of which are scented. In fact, I have just stocked up on both, because I was having difficulty finding the Tesco own brand ones, and was afraid they were either stopping making the ones I use, or were going to change over to scented ones - so when I found the Bodyform ones, I bought a load of them - and then found the Tesco ones online, so bought a few packets of those too.

I cannot imagine why anyone would think that women want their fanjos to smell of cheap airfreshener - or to itch like a bitch. I have seen some people on threads like these saying it's nicer than the smell of period or whatever - but surely if you change your towel often enough, and keep yourself clean, there won't be an offensive smell - and if there is, adding airfreshener scent will just mean you have offensive smell plus cheap airfreshener smell - I can't see that would be much of an improvement, frankly.

YANBU what.

I hate the smell of the sanitary aisle now.

I find Tesco's own good and Bodyform.

Report
mogloveseggs · 27/03/2016 12:50

I've changed to bodyform over the past year because always stink and seem to have gone very plasticky. Some of the bodyform are scented though so I end up spending what feels like an hour reading the packets! Interestingly in our asda there are always piles of always and hardly any bodyform, so lots of women must feel the same.

I haven't used towel in years, so thankfully have avoided the itching, smell, thrush etc you guys have, BUT I am not here to gloat but to share your outrage... I completely agree with all the points above and the companies should be lobbied. Not sure the best way to do it, maybe a Facebook page or group? I'd join up. Or what about a change.org petition - don't they have to discuss if it gets so many signatures? I know it might sound a bit extreme but if everyone is getting sore 'bits' and that linked article highlights how against scented products doctors are something needs to change, even if it's 'just' mandatory to change packaging to highlight if there is ANYTHING scented included in them.

I suffer from thrush and cystitis and can't imagine getting it every month just because always (or boots, body form, tampac etc) have decided to perfume their products.

'Research says this is what women want' - bollocks

I bought some Carefree "fresh" pantyliners by mistake. Two hours of using one, ended up with the worst thrush I've ever had. What chemicals are they using that can cause that kind of reaction?

Now I'm old I just went to the overnight pharmacy and bought some canesten. But as a 16 year old I would have been so embarrassed and would have struggled on for weeks before sorting it out.

The only ones that don't make me itch are lidls own or always infinity. Most supermarket own brand ones are too plasticky and make a noise when you walk!

I just wish that they didn't scent everything.

I hope they don't scent the maxi pads. The own brand ones aren't that great.

I can't stand the smell. It's a revolting smell. Apparently they introduced the scent following customer research that said something along the lines that women were concerned about 'odour control'. Confused.

There have been lots of threads about this and Im not suprised as its such a rank and strong smell.

I'm just off out to buy some new pads now. Had to use cloths over night! Perfectly serviceable, though, if a bit bulky. This has helped me finally make a decision though, I'm going to buy some cloth sanitary pads this week. Someone up thread mentioned Silk and Satin from Home Bargains - I use those too and they're good.

Right, off to do some serious sniffing....I may be some time....

Bought them by accident as post IVF pantliners are necessary when using progesterone pessaries (aka messaries aka fanjo bullets) to avoid white oily stains all over your undies. My knickers smell like a glade plug in. Or possibly that 'new car' smell with the crappy air freshener thing dangling from the rear view mirror.

What really boils my piss is that they Always don't even make it clear on the packaging that their products are scented. They just have some bollocks about "odour neutralising something or other" in tiny writing with all the blurb on the back.

I agree with this, it's not just the advertised scent, it's the odour neutralising stuff as well.

I recently used some panty liners from Sainsbury, and although they were unscented, they had this in them. Cue some bad itching until I wised up.

I've now used the Wilkinson basic pack (plastic bag packaging, not boxed) and no itching. Even Wilko are guilty of using the odour neutralising stuff in some of their packs.

I'm looking with interest at which towels are mentioned as being good, as I've had a mild prolapse and want to avoid using my mooncup for a while until all is well again.

The manufacturers really do seem to play on women's fear that they might smell. I've never noticed someone being on a period, but can certainly smell when they're using the scented crap.

I'm a big fan of the scented products, the y must be fairly popular outside of Mumsnet as they seem to be everywhere now.

I bet all the "research" showing women were concerned about "odour control" was obtained by asking leading questions....

Report

Just because the scented products are everywhere, it doesn't mean they are popular, just that it's all that sits on the shelf.

Although until my miscarriage last week I hadn't experienced the horrors delights of using sanitary towels in over 20 years. Don't care how much the absorbency technology has come on over the years, it's still like wearing a nappy. Urgh. Thankfully I bought Bodyform pads which don't whiff of air freshener.

If a miscarriage isn't horrible enough, having to use pads is just the icing on the cake of shite tbh.
