AIBU?

AIBU to think that Tesco should still stock Easter eggs on Easter Saturday.....

......rather than clear it all for Passover stuff which isn't for another 3 weeks?

It seems to be getting worse each year. Middle of January was when they first started stocking Easter stuff. I'd only just got the house clear after the mess of Christmas, why would I want to buy Easter stuff then and have to find somewhere to store it all for 2 months.

It boils my piss. There are not even any mini eggs or Lindt bunnies left. All cleared for Passover stuff which is still a few weeks off.

Tesco do know that people want to shop for Easter during Easter bank holiday weekend because they've got the usual traditional food in like lamb and hot cross buns. but their Easter display which they've had for weeks and weeks has been switched to Passover.

Aldi seem to get it right- stock the seasonal stuff a few weeks before and there are usually a few bits left a day or two before the seasonal event. Dunno about the others cos I haven't been anywhere else today.

But tesco......grrrrrr......

Truffle: It's Liverpool. There were more than matzo boxes. It included all sorts of kosher stuff and drinks too. I thought this was just normal and that all supermarkets in big cities with Jewish populations would do this? I wish I had paid attention to exactly what sort of food stuff it was as I had no idea of the excitement it would cause! Grin

I hope our Waitrose has some left later, I won't be having an easter egg unless they are in stock and reduced near to closing time.

Tesco had very limited selection on Wednesday so went to Waitrose where the selection was much better. Was at my local Morrison's on Thursday and the selection was again poor. Heard so many people complaining to themselves.

They've sold it, it's gone. I didn't get the particular chocolate bunnies I had counted on one year by waiting too long... haven't made that mistake again!

We also have a section of Asian, Caribbean, Polish and now American food and drink too. I don't recognise half of it. The American stuff looks FULL of sugar and additives. And it's got grits. I wouldn't even know what to do with that!

I popped into poundland this morning. They still had lots of Easter stuff as well as chocolate Santas - might be your best bet!

We have loads of different sections but no passover not that i was looking we must not have a big jewish population here , grits is like porridge so id imagine you would use it like polenta

But they haven't cleared it to make room for something else. They have predicted demand, sourced accordingly to make sure that they sell it all at the price they want to rather than having mountains leftover tomorrow that they have to discount. X

I've just had to pop to our local Tesco express as forgot to buy butter yesterday and there were still loads of eggs there.

I know I am completely missing the point here but Easter Saturday is next week, today is Holy Saturday.

There was an announcement on Thursday morning in our local Asda that they were selling the last of the Easter Eggs so I imagine they would be gone by the end of Thursday.

As I understand it, stuff like tea and coke is normally ok under a regular kosher diet, unlike pork or shellfish which never are.
During Passover all stuff should be kosher and I believe the only difference is that it's been blessed.

I am not very Jewish so I'm happy to be corrected.

Curlyhairedassassin Ooh, which Liverpool Tesco was this? Was it the big one on Mather Avenue? Big Jewish community in Allerton Smile

I bet the shops still have those rank looking Marmite eggs though, the dirty filthy Marmite chocolate bastards Grin

I was just about to say the Allerton road one thereal & curlyhairedassassin .

I did the same thing last year, went there late after work only to find boxes and boxes of jewish crackers. I was in the Old swan one this morning and the whole easter egg aisle was replaced with gardening stuff.

I had a brilliant idea this year to make one for ds - It went horribly wrong on thursday when I burnt 2 massive bars of galaxy and realised my chocolate mold was in fact an egg shaped cake tin. So queue me running around every shop nearby to find a decent easter egg. I gave up and got him a few kinder eggs and a pair of paw patrol sunglasses (fingers crossed he has no clue anyway as he's 3) Smile

It wasn't my opinion that eggs won't sell - I'd buy them too! But I consulted with Sainsburys once and got to see lots of retail paperwork. Best practice, from a profitability point of view, is to sell out before Easter and have none left over to reduce.

If anyone in south Liverpool is struggling to find Easter eggs, it might be worth checking out the M&S Simply Food in Speke? I was there at closing time on Thursday and they still had vast quantities of Easter eggs (just as well, as I was there to buy some!). Not sure if they will have taken them off the shop floor since then.

Buddah your story made me laugh - that's the kind of thing I'd do!

thereal yep they're gone now. I walked over at lunch yesterday and there was none left.

Oh how I laughed at my mum buying mine back in February Blush

Jew(ish atheist) here.

Passover stuff involves Matzah which is unleavened bread. Basically like water biscuits

Kosher for passover biscuits and cakes are made in a similar way

Kosher for passover coke and other products is just a rip off and means that it's got a ridiculous mark up and has been approved as 'Kosher for passover' by the relevant authorities

Passover isn't for another 3 weeks although as the last supper was the first night of Passover there is traditionally an overlap with Easter

I agree it's totally crap for them not to sell Easter eggs on Easter Saturday. Madness

As I kid I never got an easter egg because Easter always fell during passover and mum wouldn't let us have chocolate in the house. Gutted!!

(I was brought up Jewish and consider myself culturally Jewish but as an adult I decided I didn't believe in God and so don't personally observe the dietary laws of Passover.

I do however join my Jewish family for the first night of Passover and happily partake in the traditional Seder meal as in my somewhat irreligious it's basically 'they tried to kill us, let's eat!)

There were plenty available in my local Sainsburys yesterday, not been in today. But I remember going in Asda on the Saturday last year and virtually nothing left, had to get some dark chocolate mint ones. I don't understand their thinking, you can always get Christmas stuff on Christmas Eve. Why do they want to piss off customers?

OK they don't want to sell at a discount, but the profits on Easter eggs must be huge, considering the amount of chocolate you get per £. They all disappear from the shelves on or before Easter Sunday, so what do they actually do with any leftover then if they won't sell them at a slashed price?

YANBU OP. I'm vaguely organised this year, but I popped into Tesco on Xmas eve to pick up some milk etc at the last minute. Wanted a big roll of cheap wrapping paper as well because I didn't have a big enough bit to wrap up a doll's pram. The entire Christmas display had been reduced to one small corner, all the big mid-aisle baskets had gone. I managed to find some paper but it was a stretch. Glad I had bought everything I needed already!

The Kosher for passover coke and ketchup gets the mark up because the Beth Din (basically the Kosher police) have inspected the production and confirmed that there was no contamination with anything non-kosher for passover

Which of course there isn't the rest of the year either. But it's the official seal of approval

Yes it was the Mather Avenue tesco (am impressed at your detective skills Grin)

There is always a lot of grape juice in the Jewish section. Is that a particularly Jewish thing then? Confused

Princess, it's clearly nothing to do with demand (as there were others like me wandering round looking for them) and mostly to do with profit. But then, as Aldi seem to provide what customers want when they want it and don't have massively high prices, one wonders where Tesco are going wrong.

(I am an Aldi convert and while the location of our Tesco is very convenient and I do use it because of that I do my main shop at Aldi. And the more tesco does to piss me off, like this Easter egg fiasco each year, and selling tubs of Christmas chocolates in August, the less I'm inclined to go there unless absolutely necessary.

Grape juice is used in place of disgustingly sweet Kosher wine for kiddush - blessings over wine

Traditionally you would make kiddush before Friday night dinner (Shabbat ie Sabbath meal)

And there is LOTS of drinking of wine at the passover Seder. You have to get through at least four cups throughout - so lots of topping up your glases

Kosher wine is disgusting - think slightly alcoholic vimto but less nice - so I will happily take the grape juice
