Would you be offended by this - alcohol / chainstore related

JustAnotherOP · 23/03/2016 16:40

Most mornings I do a shop for the day / week. I always pick up a bottle of wine or a few beers along the way.

This morning I went to the chainstore (my local), to buy wine. Later today I went back to pick up a few more bottles. The cashier that served me in the morning was standing next to the cashier that was serving me later today. She told her that I was most likely drunk and they called their manager to decide what to do. I was eventually served and left but I asked the manager why her colleague had deemed me drunk. She didn't have an answer. I do look very young so being ID'd is not my concern but whispering among themselves that I'm drunk has really put my hackles up.

lavenderdoilly In fact we've just spoken over the phone and he's apologised.

If you only have a glass of wine every now and then...why did you say upthread you need to cut down on your drinking Confused

JustAnotherOP · 23/03/2016 17:37

SaucyJack I am okay in myself. I didn't do dry Jan as it's not really worth it imo. I don't tend to drink most days anyway because of the dc.

One minute we rave about "getting on the gin" on MN, the next we tell an OP that they're an alcoholic when all they've asked is for their feelings to be validated regarding a trip to the supermarket.

Nice responses to the judgement brigade though, just

JustAnotherOP · 23/03/2016 17:40

Alisvolatpropiis Because we do drink regularly when we can. We need to cut down on this. I don't count a glass of wine whilst making dinner, for example, but I do count a couple of bottles on a weekend.

Orwellschild I do think that's the way with MN all the time, unfortunately. I could have written all these responses myself.

Ah I see! Fair enough.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 23/03/2016 17:45

Bloody hell! Quite the little brigade of doctors here! Don't know why people would bother their GP, just come to mumsnet and be diagnosed by people over the internet!

ElderlyKoreanLady · 23/03/2016 17:45

And as I've said Just, I agree their customer service needs work.

But your question is whether we'd be offended. And if I were buying alcohol daily, sometimes repeatedly, then no, I wouldn't be offended when someone inevitably let slip that they were judging.

Nataleejah · 23/03/2016 17:56

Thats cashiers for you. Their job is shitty, so causing inconvenience to people is the way of saying "just because i can"

ExitPursuedByABear · 23/03/2016 18:00

Yay. It's wine o' clock.

VinceNoirLovesHowardMoon · 23/03/2016 18:01

Your posts aren't consistent
You pop in to the supermarket most days and always buy some alcohol, but you don't drink often
You need to cut down on your drinking, but you don't drink when you have the kids. Except that you do, but you don't count it.

Floggingmolly · 23/03/2016 18:04

The manager's just called you to apologise???

Floggingmolly · 23/03/2016 18:05

Probably because you're single handedly keeping the shop afloat...

GooseberryRoolz · 23/03/2016 18:06

It's only when you stop drinking that you realise there's something really not quite right about buying alcohol every day, going home and drinking it it all, and then walking round the next morning hungover and stinking of stale booze

This.

And vince is correct about the inconsistencies.

HermioneJeanGranger · 23/03/2016 18:07

I think you're offended because there might be some truth in what the cashier is saying - you obviously do buy a lot of alcohol (and regularly) or she wouldn't notice/remember.

I work in retail. While I would never comment on a customers shopping habits to their face, I do notice when we get regular customers buying the same/similar things every week. There's a woman who buys 200 cigarettes a WEEK. Every week. We notice it because it's so unusual.

MySordidCakeSecret · 23/03/2016 18:09

it does sound very strange... your behaviour that is Hmm

andypandy55 · 23/03/2016 18:10

How rude and how judgemental. You could be sharing the alcohol with others. It's nobody's business but your own and they are there to serve you not pass comment, unless of course you are acting irrationally or being abusive.

bigbuttons · 23/03/2016 18:13

you said you bought alcohol most days. if you don't drink much why are you buying alcohol most days ?
You say you don't often drink but in another post say you often have wine with dinner.

if you don't drink often why do you ay you need to cut own on your drinking?

Are you aware that you have been contradicting yourself?

bigbuttons · 23/03/2016 18:17

Because we do drink regularly when we can. We need to cut down on this. I don't count a glass of wine whilst making dinner, for example, but I do count a couple of bottles on a weekend

Drinking regularly when you can makes no sense, drinking regularly means drinking regularly, not when you can.
Unless of course you can always drink then you are drinking regularly.

Op I don't care how much you drink but from what YOU have posted, you are buying and drinking much more than you will admit to yoursel.

ElderlyKoreanLady · 23/03/2016 18:23

That's because drinking while cooking doesn't count by the looks of it big. Not sure why.

GooseberryRoolz · 23/03/2016 18:24

It wasn't a gossipy remark, was it? The cashiers called their manager for help/guidance re. whether they could legally serve OP.

Cashiers don't call a manager over to make catty passing remarks about a customer. So something made them question whether she was sober.

TheCrumpettyTree · 23/03/2016 18:25

Buying alcohol most days has nothing to do with having a dinner party.

GooseberryRoolz · 23/03/2016 18:25

(And I doubt 'she bought a bottle already today' would be enough on its own.)

bigbuttons · 23/03/2016 18:26

Indeed drink is drink whatever time of day you drink it.

Op it is clear from everything you have said that you drink way more than you will admit and are a bit pissed off that the people in the hop have noticed this.
