To think DPD make up driver names?

Today I have Fabian delivering to me and he's 15 mins away. I do so love the DPD tracker. I think Waitrose should have it on their delivery vans too.

DPD are coming out again on Wednesday. I'm hoping for Attila. I expect it will be Martyn with a Y.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 26/03/2016 22:26

Barnoush DPD came last time...

Adarajames · 27/03/2016 03:42

I had to check it really was his name after a few times of same guy delivering, he assured me it is, although I didn't check any ID, maybe I'll ask him for some next time to be sure Grin he's called Eric

ClearEyesFullHeartsCantLose · 27/03/2016 04:05

Goodness most of the dpd drivers are male - perhaps we are really pretty unusual with June and her wee dog which does the rounds with her. If it's not June, it's usually Steve, and if neither of them then it'll be some random whose name I have never remembered because they are not June or Steve!

TippyTappyLappyToppy · 27/03/2016 04:19

What's really interesting about this thread is there is a roughly 50:50 split between names that are probably British born drivers and names that probably aren't.

It doesn't bode well for people who argue that foreigners don't take jobs that British people can and would do. It's a good avert for the Out campaigners of Brexit though.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 27/03/2016 06:43

Only if you think it's a bad thing that there are foreign drivers.

TippyTappyLappyToppy · 27/03/2016 09:21

Well I would imagine that most people intending to vote to leave the EU would say it's a bad thing in those kinds of proportions, yes. I think the immigration levels in recent years and how that will impact on the UK going forward if nothing is done to slow it down is THE big issue for people intending to vote to leave.

Anyway, that's a derail of this thread, but it did just strike me as interesting that approximately 50% of those drivers have non-British sounding names.

TippyTappyLappyToppy · 27/03/2016 09:24

If they were working in chicken processing factories or doing backbreaking agricultural work that no-one else wants when they can be as well off on benefits then I can understand it, but I imagine driving for Ocado is a pretty cushy number and I can't see many unemployed Brits turning it down. So it does play into the hands of people who would say 'immigrants steal our jobs.'

Gabilan · 27/03/2016 09:37

It's a thread about names that might be made up so people are more likely to mention names which sound odd to them. Many of the DPD drivers I encounter are called John, Pete and Steve but there's no particular need to mention them here as they're unlikely to be made up (unless Pete is really Petrus and gets fed up with people immigrant bashing).

I assume DPD have a free and fair interview process. If you want the job that Attila has then make sure your CV is better than his and you'll get the job. Otherwise I'd rather Attila delivered my parcels since he's polite and efficient and on the occasions I've seen him driving around, a considerate driver as well.

So stuff your 50:50 ratio and concern that this thread might fuel the EDL's flames. It's a self-selecting survey in which foreign names are more likely to be cited. And there's very little evidence that all those names will be from non-British citizens. Frankly my English friends give their children odd enough names. Domitian could very well be British.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 27/03/2016 09:41

Yeah, let's deport any delivery drivers with foreign sounding names.....Hmm

.....and then complain when we are sat at home waiting for a delivery that never arrives.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 27/03/2016 09:46

Also worth noting that a lot of delivery drivers are self employed having to either hire or buy their own van, pay for it to be branded and then get a pittance per parcel delivered. That includes companies such as parcel force. If you want to be able to tell the difference. The ones where your parcel is returned to the depot usually indicates a salaried driver as the one being paid by delivery won't get his 50p if he has to take it back.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 27/03/2016 09:55

I think the sort of people who would use this thread as evidence for Brexit probably already hold those sorts of xenophobic views anyway.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 27/03/2016 09:58

Personally I can't imagine reading the thread and suddenly thinking "wow lots of DPD drivers have foreign names, better vote for Brexit after all".

OneMagnumisneverenough · 27/03/2016 10:05

Me either, but then I happen to live in an area where immigration has not had a significant impact other than an enlarged foreign food bit in the supermarket. I guess there are people who are dealing with the impact of a lot of immigrants on their small community and are finding that very tough.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 27/03/2016 10:08

From this thread it doesn't seem like it..people being surprised by foreign names and thinking they are made up!

OneMagnumisneverenough · 27/03/2016 10:12

True Grin

gamerchick · 27/03/2016 10:14

Well I can say the names are not made up, the drivers don't input their own names.

You laugh because someone has a Welsh name?

OneMagnumisneverenough · 27/03/2016 10:26

I'm also a bit confused. I thought that the immigrants were all here living of our benefits, but it appears that actually they are here stealing our jobs and paying their taxes.....ConfusedHmm

acatcalledjohn · 27/03/2016 10:42

We have Salim too, and occasionally Jatinder. Recently the tracker didn't work so I tweeted DPD with the tracker number. 20min later I got a call with an update. They are the best delivery service around.

I can safely say that Salim really is a Salim, and Jatinder most definitely looks like he could well be a Jatinder. Fabian is quite a common name on the continent, so no idea why you'd think that name is made up.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 27/03/2016 10:45

We usually get DPD Lee. He's very good.

I have asked Ocado drivers if they use their real names or just pick a badge, but they assure me they're real Grin

MrsJohnLuther · 27/03/2016 10:54

No of course not, I'm half welsh! But all the DPD drivers round here (very far away from Wales incidentally) have unusual names, I've always wondered if they make them up too. This thread seems to confirm they might.

MrsJohnLuther · 27/03/2016 10:57

Anyway, DPD is the best delivery company by miles, and I love the fact I can track the driver. I think they get a bit scared when I tell them I've been watching them drive around the town on my computer......

gamerchick · 27/03/2016 11:07

Seriously they don't make up their own names. Well not unless all their i.d is made up as well.
