To actually be happy that I was right about a troll

Reported my first thread which was becoming more unbelievable, and was indeed a troll. Usually these things go over my head completely!

OP posts:
bumbleymummy · 18/03/2016 14:18

"I suspect that different admin staff pick up different reports and act differently with no joined up thinking."

Yes, that does seem to be the case. I was told that someone's posts were being thoroughly investigated but when I reported another dodgy post it was a different person from MNHQ that replied and she didn't seem to be aware of the previous report.

Bogeyface · 18/03/2016 16:08

Be fair though, a site the size of MN must get hundreds of reports a day from people who have made mistakes, posted identifying info, suspect trolls, personal attacks, been outed etc. so it must be hard to keep track.

bumbleymummy · 18/03/2016 16:37

Oh I know. I've said before that I don't envy them their job at all. It must be very hard to make the call sometimes. I just thought that people's names would be 'tagged' with the various reports so that all staff can see the history and whether or not someone is being investigated.

The drink driving troll had lots of wwyd type threads running - all from this week. All rather extreme and dramarific. They revealed a recent history in which they'd done a degree but didn't really know what to do with it, while at the same time were a "nutritionist" (probably just as qualified as many other nutritionists, IMO) who ate at Nandos and loved marshmallows. All the while they were getting their degree, they were a single parent to a very small child, who had ASD with severe behavioural problems and were considering donor insemination for another child, on account of being Rh- and nearly dying last time. They also did volunteer work with vulnerable children - drama potential again.

So, to people who had seen just one or two of their threads, they might have been plausible and thus recognised, but the plot as a whole is simultaneously far too complex (with, as mentioned before, as many MN hot buttons thrown in as possible, exactly the same as the motorbike accident thread) and absolutely full of holes.

firesidechat · 18/03/2016 17:49

Oh was the drink driving one the same as the rhesus negative one? Didn't spot that.

firesidechat · 18/03/2016 17:52

Your right ouryve people rarely have lives worthy of so many dramatic posts in such a short time or perhaps I live a very boring life.

firesidechat · 18/03/2016 17:53

You're not your.

RupertPupkin · 18/03/2016 19:03

I just don't get why you'd invest time and energy into trolling a parenting forum. I always read articles about trolling because the psychology is kind of fascinating. I remember a couple of articles where the journo tracked down their trolls. And if they hadn't caused so much damage you'd feel sorry for them as they were so pathetic sounding. Lindy West was one journo who confronted a rather dedicated troll who started a Twitter account masquerading as her dead father. That is fucked up.

If we could somehow start naming and shaming these people they'd run a mile because they're total cowards.

Lweji · 18/03/2016 20:30

Wasn't there a theory about trolldom having contests about who could get the most responses?

liberatedwine · 18/03/2016 21:20

I find this website fascinating, featuring the exposure of dedicated and determined trolls. One spent more than a decade pretending to be someone else!

WellWhoKnew · 18/03/2016 22:54

I have met a troll in real life.

I'd love to be able to tell you the stereotype of a troll is a myth.

Sadly, I can't.

bumbleymummy · 18/03/2016 22:58

Hairy handed trucker named Dave?

WellWhoKnew · 18/03/2016 23:02

Not far off. Wrong name though.

bumbleymummy · 18/03/2016 23:04
Grin
MyMarchMN · 18/03/2016 23:16

Why would anyone troll about child birth?! Some trolls really do need help.

PurpleDaisies · 18/03/2016 23:17

It was child abuse related mymarch. Really grim.

WellWhoKnew · 18/03/2016 23:41

Little point in asking why.

Why would anyone troll about a marriage break-up?

And then try and get themselves kudos with women who are dealing with that very issue.

And the children of that reality.

I don't know why. I just know one who did.

As I say, there's a stereotype. And it's not far removed from reality.

novemberchild · 19/03/2016 04:25

If I ever decide to form a band, I'm calling it 'Motorbike Wife Troll'.

Hackedabove · 19/03/2016 06:09

I'm just finding I believe nothing these days, which is a shame.

Also I never get the fact people see the 'posting style', I just read words Confused

ColdTeaAgain · 19/03/2016 06:31

Update on childbirth thread says MNHQ are satisfied the OP is genuine SadConfused

bumbleymummy · 19/03/2016 07:18

Which one is the childbirth thread?

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 19/03/2016 07:20

I'm so naive, I never guess which are the troll threads so stick to posting on the lighthearted ones mainly.
I was definitely sucked in by the cancer one, I actually cried reading the OPs opening post.

pigeonpoo · 19/03/2016 08:13

I was looking for it too, which one is it?

ColdTeaAgain · 19/03/2016 08:17

Check Night Watch topic in site stuff.

bumbleymummy · 19/03/2016 08:22

The 'This needs hiding' thread? :( The thread had a horrible title if that was it. I can see why people would be suspicious. I wonder how MNHQ are convinced that someone is genuine?
