To actually be happy that I was right about a troll

Reported my first thread which was becoming more unbelievable, and was indeed a troll. Usually these things go over my head completely!

pigeonpoo · 17/03/2016 18:46

Sorry for my million typos

Stratter5 · 17/03/2016 19:42

Childbirth one has gone, but a lovely MNer PM'd me earlier. Just sick paedo style stuff. Well, not just, but you know what I mean :(

Stratter5 · 17/03/2016 19:43

Oh and regarding reporting trolls, do it as soon as you are suspicious. Let MNHQ decide, but the earlier you alert them, the less damage is done.

MummaB123 · 17/03/2016 19:50

Ohtinky and ginslinger, I was watching that one too! Where has it gone?! I didn't get to the end!

Empress3 · 18/03/2016 02:07

Amazing news Op, you can now proceed to the next level. Wink

WellWhoKnew · 18/03/2016 02:13

Problem is: what happens if TSSDNCOP relies on procedures that are inadequate.

And 20 MNetters say please let us inform you...

Just means this thread will be detonated...

The childbirth one was beyond the normal troll type stuff. I agree with the poster up thread who said it should be reported... Somewhere. It was grim.

AnnaForbes · 18/03/2016 04:04

Bloody dog waking me up Sad

If the childbirth one was the one that had an alarming title (being deliberately vague)I'm glad it's gone. The title stayed with me but I didn't click on it and I don't want to dwell on what might have been the content of the thread. I do agree, some threads warrant reporting higher than mnhq.

MadSprocker · 18/03/2016 08:20

What's the next level empress?

OP posts:
bumbleymummy · 18/03/2016 08:53

I wonder that too WellWhoKnew. What if there isn't necessarily anything strange from their end - it's just that the story doesn't add up. Is it just based on the number of people who report their suspicious then?

liberatedwine · 18/03/2016 08:59

I wonder how trolls feel, when their threads are deleted? Outraged that they were revealed to be lying? Sad that their creative writing career has juddered to a halt? Relieved that it's over and normal life can resume?

wonkylampshade · 18/03/2016 09:17

Anything that's plainly been started by a paedophile should be reported to CEOP imo. You could argue that it sets a precedent where posters can't be anonymous by definition, but to me there is a line and that is well over it.

There have been quite a few threads lately which look like they've been started by trolls wishing to get a kick out of discussing child abuse with other posters.

I honesty think the site admin has a responsibility to act in those circumstances.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 18/03/2016 11:58

Given that a few of us have asked and no one has answered I assume that childbirth was too grim to share

What gets me is the too bad to be true ones when you are half received its not true

NotNob · 18/03/2016 12:35

Regarding the childbirth one, it got hidden after a few posts - I was one of the ones awake and reported it. Go to the night watch board and see the thread link is still there, although thankfully thread content is gone. It will give you an idea of it's sick nature. It was horrible and I wish I'd not opened it at the time.

ouryve · 18/03/2016 12:41

There seems to be a trend of trolls building up an MN bingo score sheet with their storylines. I've had my Spidey sense triggered by a few. One, yesterday, started posting filth just a few hours after I twigged and reported.

It does get rather tedious.

NewYearNewToads · 18/03/2016 12:43

I hardly ever spot trolls so I'm always very proud of myself when I do.

NotNob · 18/03/2016 12:45

Assume you mean the drink driving one, ouryve, in fact you were the lucky recipient if I remember correctly.

Trollicking · 18/03/2016 12:48

I was the first to post on a really dodgy one last night that has since been deleted. It's was a peado type one but phrased innocently - I posted immediately to say something like 'oh dear, you are going to get lots of people thinking you are a troll'. So I wasn't exactly troll hunting but It's just too awful if anyone replies .

I get really ConfusedHmm when posters start replying to some sex threads with details of their own sex lives etc. I think they all get a bit of a kick out of it and whisky there is nothing wrong or shameful with discussing threads I think it encourages the weirdos - it's tricky I've got the sex threads hidden.

I would have thought MNHQ are making enough money to employ night staff and not rely on volunteers. That's a bit cheapy of them Blush The really nasty trolling is putting me off the site.

Dolly80 · 18/03/2016 13:05

What happens if the suspected troll has other threads going at the same time one is deleted/they're banned?

Only ask as there was a troll thread deleted last night/ OP banned but they are still getting responses to another thread they started a while back (I never realised they were a troll on that one Blush)

I've reported to MNHQ to let them know...hoping that was the right thing to do.

Dolly80 · 18/03/2016 13:05

In addition, I am generally useless at spotting trolls and really should have a better sense for it!

firesidechat · 18/03/2016 13:20

Yes you did the right thing Dolly80, although whether the thread will stay or go is anyone's guess.

What threads get deleted seems to be largely a lottery. There is a regular poster who name changes constantly and who has been deleted many, many times. I'm not sure whether they are a troll as such, but there are definitely issues there. I reported another thread by her recently and yet it's still there. Why delete some threads and not others?

I suspect that different admin staff pick up different reports and act differently with no joined up thinking.

liz70 · 18/03/2016 13:49

"there was a troll thread deleted last night/ OP banned but they are still getting responses to another thread they started a while back (I never realised they were a troll on that one blush)"

Yes, that poster has lots of other "normal" posts running as well as that wtf one that was deleted yesterday. Can a genuine member's username be appropriated by a troll?

firesidechat · 18/03/2016 13:58

It's a common pattern with trolls. Post a few completely innocent posts on a few threads over hours/days and then in with the troll thread. They seem to think it gives them some kind of history, but all it does is delay the troll hunters by seconds.

Dolly80 · 18/03/2016 14:12

As others have said, the concept of trolling is just baffling to me. They obviously get a kick from it but it seems absurd to me.

I agree there is a line and some cross this (like the thread in
childbirth others have referred to) I think those cross into 'needing reporting somewhere else' territory. People shouldn't always be protected by the anonymity of the Internet.

firesidechat · 18/03/2016 14:16

For all we know admin may have taken it further. They have contacted the relevant authorities before apparently and they can't exactly tell us what they are doing about individuals. We can only hope.
