Deranged runners in public spaces....

I am genuinely interested in other people's opinions following a really unpleasant experience when out with my two kids and DP yesterday.

So we have membership to a local, but national attraction. It is a very large outdoor type of space which people generally go to to walk, take kids, picnic, and walk dogs. The layout is in two halves so in one side nog dogs are allowed at all and hence the other half is where you find the dogs.

For info no bikes or scooters etc allowed.

We were about half way round the dog walking half and as we had gone late in the day it was very quiet and we could see in front and behind quite far. We have a 6 month old toy breed puppy ( eg very small) who has no aggressive or overtly bothersome behaviours, we are in the process of completing her off lead training, which is why we went late and only let her off in the parts of the attraction where we had good visibility, not wishing to be in any way a nuisance to others.

So all of a sudden a runner emerged AT HIGH SPEED from the trees, not from main path, as he hurtled towards us both DP and I tried to put her back on lead as well as get the kids out of this mans way as it was fairly obvious he was not going to be sensible and actually slow down/ alter his path so that we could all pass sensibly.

As he approached he the. Started shouting at us to put dog back on lead as by this point she had started trunking over to this fast moving object who was shouting and flapping his hand about. At no point did she jump up, bark, growl or do anything whatsoever other than trundle along next to him. The verbal abuse then escalated to the point she this man was swearing and literally screaming at us all the while still trying to run....please note he was not being impeded in his run in any way.....

Eventually my DP by this time rather peed off with all the shouting and swearing in front of our kids shouted back very firmly to him to STOP running so we could put dog back in lead if this is what he wanted.....man went ballistic carried in verbally abusing me/DP and at one point literally launched himself over out dog due to having distracted himself off his own path.....

Whole, episode was really upsetting and both kids by now in tears, dog shaking like a leaf etc.

Now my AIBU is really why do people undertaking timed/ serious sports use public places where to encounter even the possibility of a hold up is going to cause them immense rage/distress/or where they are so 'in the zone' they lose the ability to be a. Rational human being.

It seems to be happening more and more recently, with runners coming at us en masse. In addition to this last incident we have had a few near misses recently where groups of runners have literally forced my young DC off the road....

I appreciate that we all have the right to use the roads, pavements and public spaces but ultimately they are not sports arenas or running tracks, there are designated places for that which I for example wouldn't go to walk the dog or take the kids to play, realising that the two uses do not mix, and often the person coming at you at speed seems to feel that their right to peruse their sporting goals trumps everyone else's right to quiet enjoyment of the public and open spaces.

And just to make it clear the dog was at no point engaging in aggressive, or disruptive behaviour, she was just trundling along faulty bemused by the shouting flapping jumping man!!!!

I'm with Kawliga (and anyone with half a brain could see that her username is Kawliga not *Kayleigh)

Had a small off-lead dog run after me in a park recently, it nipped around my ankles and I thought I was going to trip over it so I shouted at the owner to get control of her dog and she was absolutely useless -- the dog should never have been off the lead to begin with as she had no control over it at all. But yet she had a go at me for shouting at her and her dog.

Dog-owners like this get on my tits with their entitled selfish behaviour. No, I don't really want to have to stop my run just because you can't get control of your dog. Keep it on the lead if it won't come when you call it.

Twats.

SoupDragon · 13/03/2016 21:41

The dog in this story is a red herring. The fact is that the runner was a rude, arrogant arse who was behaving as if he owned the space.

SoHereItIs2016 · 13/03/2016 21:42

Oyster what control did I fail,in, was my dog aggressive, no, was it jumping up, no, was it barking, no, was it growling, no, was it trying to wrestle the mans flapping sweater, no, was it within 5 metres of the man trying tio work out what there'll was going on yes!!!! And to be honest I resent greatly the implication that it ok for grown man to verbally aggressively abuse anyone in front of young kids, so totally over the top and uneccesary......no 50/50 about it im afraid!!

Totally agree.

purplepopple · 13/03/2016 21:42

If he hadn't behaved so poorly I'd be more sympathetic but he sounds from what you've written to have reacted aggressively rather than scared (given the swearing rather than shouting "help/no/down" which is my terrified response to a dog off lead) so yanbu, he needs to learn to share space or run in the dog free section.

Peaceandloveeveryone · 13/03/2016 21:42

It's the aggression and shouting. Twats

MrsMook · 13/03/2016 21:43

Some people are twats. Some of them run, walk dogs, walk in groups blocking paths etc etc.

I've never had a serious incident with a dog while running, but there's been many occasions of small dogs offering their mobile trip hazard services around my ankles making it hard to avoid them safely. I'm happier with a larger dog as their movements are easier to dodge. I've also had plenty of incidents with a toddler who became temporarily terrified of dogs due to frequent sniffing and licking in his face from dogs "just being friendly". Sadly many of these owners failed to understand the body language of a distressed human child, and see to think that the best cure is to allow their pet to keep overwhelming the child.

The runner was unreasonable to be ranting and swearing. The earlier part of the incident is somewhat ambiguous.

I have learned as a runner to shout "excuse me" loudly to obstructive groups who look unlikely to move aside. I'd do that when walking anyway. I will acknowledge people that move aside. If I'm struggling to use my voice, then a smile/friendly grimace or nod is acknowledgement.

Hamishandthefoxes · 13/03/2016 21:44

Perhaps it was a loop? Or he was a tourist and didn't know that dogs were allowed there, other thought it was part of a marked out course eg at chats worth this weekend.

Could have been plenty of reasons not just bring a twat.

SoHereItIs2016 · 13/03/2016 21:44

Yeah but not my problem my dog didn't nip anyone.....and wouldn't be off lead of she was likely to....so not really the same....

OP posts:
Peaceandloveeveryone · 13/03/2016 21:44

Why do people have to move aside for runners? Is there a hierarchy of importance and runners are extra important?

Oysterbabe · 13/03/2016 21:44

You couldn't get it on the lead so you were not in control of the dog.

Hamishandthefoxes · 13/03/2016 21:45

He might not have known that your dog wouldn't bite, especially as he didn't seem to have much experience if dogs.

I've certainly been much more nervous since I saw someone bitten by a yappy little rat dog.

lurked101 · 13/03/2016 21:46

"Dog-owners like this get on my tits with their entitled selfish behaviour. No, I don't really want to have to stop my run just because you can't get control of your dog. Keep it on the lead if it won't come when you call it."

Runners like you get on everyones tits because you run in places where there are a larger chance of being dogs/buggies.

You can stop your run, your run is not a world record attempt, it is not vital to the good of the nation, it has something you have chosen to do and to do it in a public place so you must have some kind of public minded spirit about you to do so, not think that the space is just for you. Twat.

SoHereItIs2016 · 13/03/2016 21:46

It didn't need to be on the lead, as it was not causing any type of nuisance or threat. He had an obvious predicting problem with dogs which quite frankly is not my problem.

Hamishandthefoxes · 13/03/2016 21:48

I completely agree peace and love.

ImportantSpanielBusiness · 13/03/2016 21:48

He should do his wee hobby on a running machine if he can't behave himself. And maybe use his brain and avoid areas that welcome dogs if he becomes aggressive around them. Fuckin humans.

Hamishandthefoxes · 13/03/2016 21:49

Or dogs should be on leads in public places if they've got no recall. See how easy it is?

SoHereItIs2016 · 13/03/2016 21:51

So banish should I have to put her back on lead each and every time a sprinter comes along, even tho if they ignored her she would ignore them, or should I put her back on just in case they are a starring flapping dementor, because if the latter is the case it's still the human who is the problem not the dog.....
