Why would someone say this about vaccines? Is it odd?

Was in a health food shop today and mentioned an ongoing issue I'm having with one of my do.

The man mentioned he thought the biggest thing going wrong with our children was all the vaccines they receive. He said they full of nasties, designed to make people ill.

It could be put down to a man having a pointless rant but why would he say this? Is there any sort of truth in it?

Not the first time I've heard negative things about vaccines.

Now I'm worried about it.

Don't worry about it. It was just something a man in a shop said, and it's cobblers.

Griphook · 09/03/2016 21:09

First I need to say my children are vaccinated.

But I don't agree they are 100 % safe. A vaccine given to millions of people, surely there's a chance that 1 child might adversely be affected.

But I think you have to go with the best likely outcome, ie the likely hood of it going wrong is minuscule. So your odds are in favour of having the vaccine.

ghostyslovesheep · 09/03/2016 21:15

but Grip the NHS themselves advertise the risks of vaccination - all vaccinations carry risk - it's well documented

the things is if the risk of say death from the vaccine is 1:10000 and the risk from the illness is 1:400 which would you pick?

No one disagrees that vaccine damage is a thing - just as they wouldn't disagree that meningitis is a killer

BigQueenBee · 09/03/2016 21:17

I am so anti health food shops I want to scream.
This is the most corrupt sector of the food industry.
I think that a lot of people are ignorant to their bollocks marketing.
I'm vegan ( for health reasons, not for ever) .
Why do people believe the hype ( shit?)
So they really think they know more than the medical profession?
I went to a vegan convention, one and only, and was told breast cancer is caused by consuming milk products.
I wanted to sock the little shite in the gob.

pickledparsnip · 09/03/2016 21:24

Why have people got such a problem with health food shops? Oh yeah they must be terrible, giving a shit about people's health and selling healthy products. Fuckers.

OP just take it with a pinch of salt. If it's not something you agree with then ignore it, if it's made you think then do some research. It's certainly not a weird point of view, and it's held by many.

In all honesty it makes more sense to me to do some damn good research before allowing my kid to be injected with something just because the NHS says it's a good idea.

Vaccinate or don't vaccinate, both choices carry risks.

peggyundercrackers · 09/03/2016 21:27

vaccines do cause issues in some people just like illness causes issues for some people. do whatever you feel is right for you and what you want to do.

JanetOfTheApes · 09/03/2016 21:27

He said it because he's a dickhead.

But more disturbing is you listened even for a minute, and are worried about what some random weirdo said to you. Are you always so easily persuadable? Thats really not good at all.

pickledparsnip · 09/03/2016 21:31

Why is he a dickhead? If he told the OP she was a twat for having her kid vaccinated, then yes he'd be a dickhead. He expressed an opinion.

Alisvolatpropiis · 09/03/2016 21:34

Anti-vaxxers are living proof the brain dead walk amongst us.

I do not include those who cannot vaccinate their children due to allergies or other health issues in that statement. Can't isn't the same as won't.

Whatdoidohelp · 09/03/2016 21:38

Unless he is a medical and scientific genius with papers and research to back it up I would ignore him.

Why would you even give a shop assistant the time of day in letting this preoccupy your mind? If your cleaner told you that bleach made her aunts feet turn purple and fall off would you consider stopping using bleach Hmm

PurpleDaisies · 09/03/2016 21:39

Ignore him and his Star Trek alternative medical degree.

Oi! Don't you tar us Trekkies with that anti vax brush. I think you'll find most Star Trek fans are into proper science too so would be highly likely to vaccinate their children (note:Ris is based on no evidence at all apart from my other trek fan friends).

Alisvolatpropiis · 09/03/2016 21:42

And me, Purple!

JanetOfTheApes · 09/03/2016 21:43

Of course he's a dickhead, he's telling complete strangers that doctors are purposefully poisoning children with vaccines. He's the very definition of a dickhead.
And if you agree with him.....

Me too, purple and Alis

"Why have people got such a problem with health food shops? Oh yeah they must be terrible, giving a shit about people's health and selling healthy products. Fuckers."

Why have people got such a problem with big pharma? Oh yeah, they must be terrible, giving a shit about people's health and selling medicines. Fuckers Grin

I'm a big pharma stooge. My dcs are fully vaccinated. Every year they have a certain number of flu vaccines for staff and the queue goes around the building to get it. We all know exactly what's in it too.

Perhaps he should also read the above

CountessOfStrathearn · 09/03/2016 21:53

I am like purple, a qualified doctor, pretty senior, have vaccinated my children with everything going (including Men B and chicken pox privately), and don't know any doctors who have not done the same.

CountessOfStrathearn · 09/03/2016 21:54

Just realise that I am not like purple in that I am not a Trekkie. Don't want people getting the wrong idea! Wink Grin

ollieplimsoles · 09/03/2016 21:59

Did someone say trekkies??

But seriously though, I hate anti vaxxers with a fucking passion. I know loads of them. They are so up their own arses its untrue, calling us sheeple for having vaccines. They are the biggest flock of sheep in existence, thats the irony

I read and researched thoroughly before giving dd her vaccines. I'm so glad I did.

My favourite thing is when they go on and on about big pharma being this massive corporate machine thats just out to make money, and they do it by... wait for it....making people ill! So you buy more medicine! Ahahahaha.

But alternative medicine like crystals, homeopathy and all the other shit they love, oh there's no way they are only in it for the money... Pft.

Live long and prosper...by getting vaccinated

PurpleDaisies · 09/03/2016 21:59

I very much approve of the live long and proper emoticon! That's a new one on me.
