Am I being unreasonable not to wear a bra?

Nomorebras · 06/03/2016 21:17

Reasons being that:

  1. I find them uncomfortable
  2. They make my boobs look weird
  3. I don't think I need one.

Why do we see them as such a vital piece of clothing?

I usually wear a 34A bra but lately have been going without. Don't know my size and can't seem to figure it out

dementedpixie · 07/03/2016 13:56

thebetterbracampaign.blogspot.co.uk/p/fitting-advice.html?m=1 Measure according to this guide to get an idea of size

dementedpixie · 07/03/2016 13:57

I used to wear 40C and 40D bras buy now wear 36GG which fit much better

SleepyBoBo · 07/03/2016 14:02

I haven't managed to go without a bra since I hit 36DD at 13 (and they've only got bigger since). There are days I wish I didn't have to bother, but they would be knocking my knees if I went without (or leaking onto them as is the case at the moment). I'm getting a boob-job in about 10 years - having them hoisted up to my chin Grin.

Bun, that's what I am saying (not sure if you read my post further upthread: I mentioned the nipple shaming that is so prevalent in the UK, and there it is, alive and kicking in Blue's post). Either I am misunderstanding you or we are talking at crossed purposes. I'd love for CD's nipples to be a non issue. I don't see how that is naïve.

peacefuleasyfeeling · 07/03/2016 14:28

Just to clarify, Bun: Blue first mentioned "doing a Charlie Dimmock" (as something inappropriate), and I was commenting on her post.

Yanbu to not wear a bra. I don't wear one, not even for exercise. But I don't need too, I'm a AA!

Yabu to think that others don't though

Quiltylawningtons · 21/07/2016 23:16

I've never worn a bra - that's for 30 years - waaaay too uncomfortable - and there are a lot of health questions about binding your lymph system with a tight ( or any ) bra - I admit I' m v lucky not to have a comfort issue - only when I was breast feeding ...being pretty small..... In the summer if I feel a bit revealed I wear a waistcoat or something over my vest or t shirt....

ginghamstarfish · 22/07/2016 10:25

I'd love to not need to wear a bra, and often go without at home, or wear one of those stretchy pull-on types which are comfy. However those with larger/less than perky/downright saggy definitely do look better in a well-fitting bra. Yes, it's a personal choice, but I would feel that not wearing a bra when out in public would make me feel self-conscious. I don't really care much what others think, but it's human nature that we mostly want to look as good as we can in front of others.

UnderslungBowlingBall · 22/07/2016 11:04

I don't feel properly supported without my bra and I don't like the way my breasts look without my bra. They're not huge (36D) and relatively perky but they look like someone's split a bag of rice between two socks and then stuck a shot glass in the front. A bra pulls me up a bit and pushes me out so my chest looks smoother.

jodressy · 27/06/2017 10:31

When I was younger my boobs were a B cup, and I enjoyed going braless. Now I'm older, with larger boobs, I find that I need a bra to feel comfortable. As a senior manager at work, it also presents a smarter image with a business suit. When I come home from work, I tend to take off my bra and wear something more akin to a bralette. Hope this helps.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 27/06/2017 13:00

That's nice Jo - unfortunately you're a year late to the discussion!

Groupie123 · 27/06/2017 13:17

34C is too big in my opinion to go without. They'll be at your knees in a few years. Confused

HipsterHunter · 27/06/2017 13:23

I don't really like wearing a bra - love beech holidays when you can get away without wearing one all week :-)

I do need sports bra for sport tho

VestalVirgin · 27/06/2017 13:26

Wear a bra if you feel more comfortable with it, but not wearing a bra will not cause your breasts to sag.

There's even theories that not wearing a bra will keep the tissue firmer. Better lymph flow and all that.

I get why women with larger breasts like to wear bras, but for me, I don't really need one, and it does make the breasts look different - if you happen to have breasts that are generally pointy-shaped, the bra will make them look round.

Mymouthgetsmeintrouble · 27/06/2017 13:27

Wear or dont wear whatever you want , mine are big and i wear stretchy crop top bras a lot of the time they are still quite perky considering ive breastfed and have lost 6 stone i only wear proper bras if im wearing a clingy top or im dressing up to go somewhere nice

TakeThatFuckingDressOffNow · 27/06/2017 13:31

Whatever is comfiest for you is right! Anyone who says otherwise can do one.

I need to wear one for comfort and anyone who told me I couldn't / shouldn't can jog on!

Hope your boobs enjoy their freedom and comfort Smile

Aridane · 27/06/2017 14:07

I can but dream of going braless (32J)

Aridane · 27/06/2017 14:09

Actually - I think I would say that the top x3 inventions that have made my daily life more comfortable and liberating are i) bra, ii) contact lenses, and iii) tampons. Physical activity would be severely curtailed in the absence of a bra

grannytomine · 27/06/2017 14:12

I assume it depends on size. I've never been more than an A cup so for most of my adult life as a size 8 with an A cup I really didn't need one and in my 60s it hasn't done me any harm, no where near my knees yet and I can still pass the pencil test.

grannytomine · 27/06/2017 14:13

I did wear a bra when I was pregnant and when breastfeeding. When I was having my first I couldn't believe how uncomfortable big boobs were.

Aridane · 27/06/2017 14:21

(erm, I think I can keep a whole pencil case under my boobs... Sad)

Poorpearl · 27/06/2017 15:02

To those saying that wearing a bra stops your boobs sagging - I've read that the opposite is actually true? Something to do with your muscles and skin being unsupported makes them stronger or something (might have got that wrong)

Bluntness100 · 27/06/2017 15:18

I think uou know full well why women wear them. To stop unwanted attention, it provides a better shape under clothing, and provides a comfort level for many due to support.

I get enough attention when I'm out and about. I certainly don't need to have unfettered breasts with possibly erect nipples on display as well.

No one gives a shit if you don't wear one, and you're being unreasonable to questionother women, because unless you've literally lived under a rock and have no female friends, you know full well why they wear them.

twattymctwatterson · 27/06/2017 15:52

You seem to be missing the point that not everyone is a C cup op. I don't always feel comfortable in a bra but my 30H boobs look a lot better in one - when I'm clothed at least. Obviously it's absolutely fine for you to not wear a bra if you don't want to
