Am I being unreasonable not to wear a bra?

Reasons being that:

  1. I find them uncomfortable
  2. They make my boobs look weird
  3. I don't think I need one.

Why do we see them as such a vital piece of clothing?

Be braless and free. Better for you.

So why do the women of tribes where they are mostly naked all the time and definitely braless have saggy breasts?

alltouchedout · 07/03/2016 10:27

At 18 or 19, very slim with perky little boobs, braless was fine for me. In my 30s, chubby with F cups that are feeding my third dc, braless is v uncomfortable unless I am basically not moving. Each to their own, no one should feel obliged to wear a bra!

Soup
If you lined up a similar group of Western bra wearing women and told them to take off their harnesses, you would find that they look just the same as the tribe.
If you went to naturist resorts as I do, you would see for yourself.
The bra only works while you are wearing it.

SoupDragon · 07/03/2016 10:30

you would find that they look just the same as the tribe.

So, in fact, it makes no difference rather than not wearing a bra making them less saggy. Which was my point.

'Why do we see them as such a vital piece of clothing?'

Because I have big breasts and a bra supports them, stops them sagging, allows me to run if I need to. Liberates me.

I love bras!

hollinhurst84 · 07/03/2016 11:55

Wearing a bra doesn't make them saggy. Exercise can help but they're ligaments (coopers ligaments) that can stretch. So if you do stuff like jog without a bra or fast walk and they bounce, the ligaments stretch and sag
You can exercise the muscles underneath which can make a more pert appearance but once the ligaments have stretched, only surgery will repair them

I see mine as a vital piece of clothing because my boobs are heavy and look and feel much better held close to my chest, rather than hanging down and sitting on my belly. I could tie them in a knot, or ling them over my shoulders, I suppose, but not tripping them over is far more pleasantly achieved by wearing something to support them.

londonrach · 07/03/2016 12:00

I wish i could get away without wearing one but I inherited my grans size ones and they not small. It hurts without wearing a bra so for me its vital. If they your breasts look strange if you wearing a bra id suggest you wearing the wrong bra type for you. Wheather or not you wear a bra is up to you. Its your body so you dont need to ask permission to not wear one.

AliciaMayEmory · 07/03/2016 12:06

I'm a 30C. When i was going by what m&s said and trying to wear a 34aa I was always very uncomfortable and used to go bra-less in the summer, but since getting measured by someone who knows what they are doing my bras are so comfy that I don't even notice I am wearing them. And even though I am very small in the breast department, I am now more comfortable in a bra than not.

My nipples are likes chapel hat pegs. They'd have someone's eye out if I went braless!

Stratter5 · 07/03/2016 12:22

No bra? No, not going to happen. If your bra looks weird, or is uncomfortable, you're wearing the wrong size. And I don't buy all this bras don't make your breasts less saggy, it's illogical.

Besides, braless is not a good look. Beloved MIL never wears one and its grim. I worry for her nips when she's frying eggs.

Sallyingforth · 07/03/2016 12:24

Read the medical research into the myth surrounding bras. Breasts are muscles.

No they are not!

alltouchedout · 07/03/2016 12:24

Breasts are not muscles. There are muscles beneath them but the breast itself certainly is not muscle.

No, they're not fat either. They are breast tissue. There may be some fat, but the actual breasts are specialised tissue.

I'm a 32K currently. No way I'm going without a bra, the pressure on the ligaments would be immense and cause damage - they are heavy

BlueEyesAndDarkChocolate · 07/03/2016 12:54

Just don't do a Charlie Dimmock. It's totally inappropriate and we really don't want to see your nips.

peacefuleasyfeeling · 07/03/2016 13:12

But why, Blue? Why are Charlie Dimmock's nipples, which are tucked away safely under her appropriate work wear so inappropriate? I felt Charlie was a beacon of hope and inspiration when she was on GW (not sure if she's still there, no TV), relaxed and natural. Not saying everyone should go braless, but that it should be fine to go au naturel.

Bunbaker · 07/03/2016 13:20

I think you are being naïve peaceful. It says something about society when all people remember Charlie Dimmock for is not for her gardening.

Notso · 07/03/2016 13:40

YANBU to not wear a bra.

YABU to question why others do wear them.
