Am I being unreasonable not to wear a bra?

Nomorebras · 06/03/2016 21:17

Reasons being that:

  1. I find them uncomfortable
  2. They make my boobs look weird
  3. I don't think I need one.

Why do we see them as such a vital piece of clothing?

I wear a 36D, breastfed 2 children, am approaching 50 and regularly go without a bra. I wear close fitting cami tops. My breasts are still in good shape. I couldn't exercise without a bra but normal daily activities are fine.

IceBeing · 06/03/2016 23:20

can't say as I would care if I saw the outline of either dicks, balls or nipples (male or female).

I hate wearing a bra but I don't want dog poop or chewing gum all over my boobs so what can I do but wear the fecking thing. I'm envious of your bravery op.

StrawberryQuik · 06/03/2016 23:30

If you don't find bras comfy don't wear one OP.
I'm not a massive fan, my faves are seamless sleep bras, I only wear structured ones for special occasions/to fill out particular outfits. I'm also perfectly happy wearing a vest top instead of a bra - with a blouse and jumper no one notices my nipples.

Even at 34 weeks pregnant I'm perfectly comfy in a seamless bra or wearing a vest top instead of one.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 06/03/2016 23:35

I've never worn a bra, never even owned one and BF for four years.

Not really sure what size I am but I did measure out of interest after the long-running bra-intervention threads and came out as a 34D, which I find hard to believe as they certainly don't look very big.

Anyway, all is still nice and perky here, and if you don't like the look of my nips, don't bloody stare at them!

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 06/03/2016 23:35

Oh, and 42 btw.

CantGetYouOutOfMyHead · 06/03/2016 23:37

Oh God, I'm in the pro-bra camp. I would be an amorphous blob if I didn't have some shape on top. It's the first thing I put on. I walk taller with a bra on, even if it's just to the kitchen (32C).

GratuitousSaxandViolins · 06/03/2016 23:43

I certainly wouldn't wear a bra unless I had to, my boobs are far to big to go bra-less.

So I do see bras as a vital piece of clothing for me. I don't think everyone thinks they're vital. If you don't want to wear one then don't. It's odd that you're questioning those that do.

BonnieF · 06/03/2016 23:53

My sister has small boobs, definitely no bigger than an A cup, and she never wears a bra. I'm not sure she even owns one. She hasn't had kids, so her boobs are the same now as when she was a teenager.

Decorum Grin -bonkers! Seriously, Communist expressed it so well; people are weirded out and affronted by the outline of nipples. Growing up in Scandinavia, bras were very much an optional thing. Moving to England, I quickly conformed as the nipple shaming was so upfront and intense. Such a pity.

CommunistLegoBloc · 07/03/2016 00:07

Do you object to seeing men's nipples or the outline thereof, through their shirt? If not, shut up. I see that every single day from blokes in office attire and no one bats an eyelid. Bloody double standards.

CallMeExhausted · 07/03/2016 00:18

My opinion exists as only mine, so take it with an entire salt cellar...

I hate my bra. With many passions. So, as soon as I come into the house, it is GONE

However, I am self-conscious in public, as I have been generously be-norked by the tit fairy. So, I try to find as comfortable a steel belted radial super durable bra as I can, and wear it in public.

At my age, my knees appreciate it Grin

I have a dear friend in her late 70's who told me a few weeks ago that she has never worn a bra. Her boobs look as pert as freshly sprung buttercups! I have heard that it doesn't make any difference to droopiness if you don't wear one & can even help them stay uplifted if you don't. Perhaps it does depend on the sixe of your breasts? Freedom to your boobs!

TheStoic · 07/03/2016 05:38

I really wish I could be so liberated, but I feel naked and vulnerable without a bra! And I'm not even particularly well endowed.

Reminds me. We saw some lingerie in a store recently, and my 8yo daughter said 'Why do they bother making pretty bras? It's not like anyone else ever sees them.'

Junosmum · 07/03/2016 06:15

I only have small boobs but prefer to wear a bra as:
A) my nipples are very prominent through clothing otherwise
B) a moulded cup gives them a better shape in loose clothing
C) I feel naked and vulnerable without one.

YANBU to not want to wear one but you are being unreasonable to expect everyone to feel the same as you.

MissRabbitHasTooManyJobs · 07/03/2016 06:19

When I was 20 (18 years ago ) I did camp America.
Shared a cabin with a group of girls and one of them asked why i always wore my bra to bed, i honestly don't know why I did looking back but took it off that night and have never looked backGrin

I'm 36 DD and suffer with back problems and wonder if my lack of bra wearing has contributed to that.

I will literally only wear a bra when I go out ( or if I'm expecting visitors ) as I feel like I'm being strangled.
Maybe I need to get measured?

One afternoon when dd was at nursery I was in a major rush to pick her up, threw my coat on and ran out of the door. Halfway there I realised I was bra less it was so embarrassing!! Felt so exposed even though I had a big parka on.

It's like a joke now though as close family and friends expect me to be without bra but can get embarrassing if an unexpected visitor arrives.
As soon as I'm in I take bra off, jewellery and put on my pyjamas as most comfortable.
This thread is convincing me to get measured again...

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 07/03/2016 06:21

God I could never sleep in a bra - can't wait to get the damn thing off the second I'm in for the evening.

ClopySow · 07/03/2016 06:44

Why are people so horrified at the thought of nipples being seen?

I wear a bra less and less at home. And i nip to the corner shop braless. But i have massive boobs that point south, so i wear one if i'm out of the house. I'd rather not.

Nomorebras · 07/03/2016 06:53

It is personal choice; I'd never tell anyone they shouldn't wear a bra but at the same time I don't really understand when people say they're comfier without one.

Why I namechanged - not sure, to be fair. Possibly enough people know I go bra less to know its me if combined with other posts. I've been name changing a fair bit lately.

I've been through phases over the years of bra rejection, but it's never lasted. Purely through fear of excessive, middle-age, nork sag. 50 now and they're ok ~ ish.

MaidOfStars · 07/03/2016 09:35

I am 34B, but fairly soggy with it. If I go bra less, they flop around. So bouncing downstairs, for example, will cause an upward and downward 'snap' that hurts. That's why it's more comfy to wear a bra.

oliviaclottedcream · 07/03/2016 10:05

I agree.. It's when on holiday when I have to throw them over my shoulders to get an even tan, that I'm grateful I did wear one. Else the'd be round my waist...
