AIBU to ask if you've got fat thighs?

Just had to ditch another pair of trousers as they had holes on the inside seams where my fat thighs rub together!! Is there anything I can do to avoid this (always happens even with jeans). Can fat thighs ever really change and how? I swim and walk a lot but that doesn't seem to make a difference.

I can't find a link to the proper study, but there is a relationship between women who carry their fat in the thighs/arse/hips and the IQ of their children. The particular kind of fat we store and its proximity to the growing baby, is good for 'feeding' the developing brain apparently.

I remind myself of this every time I'm getting in a huff over my horrible parsnip shaped legs.

octopusrus · 06/03/2016 07:36

I have to second the Oasis Jade skinny jeans, they are generous on the thighs but high-ish waisted and small on the waist so you don't have to keep pulling them up.

Any other exercise tips for this area? Am going to try body pump!

FrancesNiadova · 06/03/2016 07:44

Please look at Goya' s ,"The Clothed Maja."
This woman is beautiful and the artist celebrates her sensual curves.
I don't know where this desire for women to have a pencil thin boyish profile came from. I had a boyish-thin figure right through to my mid-30's. It changed after the birth of my 2nd dc. I'm all woman now! Grin

Frances - I agree! Art galleries are great sources of more realistic beauty. I saw this recently and I like to think that my bodyshape is very similar to Aphrodite who is goddess of love, beauty and sexualuty nonetheless! With added bonus that I have arms and a head. Sounds like we should all be heading to Oasis for their jeans. I'm using M&S Jeans (size 10 thanks to vanity sizing) for just over £20 as no point spending more when they last a year even if we'll curculated. Even the £30+ ones are bobbling at the seams. My BMI is 23.5 but I'm small on top - although pregnancy has changed my fat distribution so I have a bit of a tummy and more weight on my arms, at least the bigger boobs are a bonus as I had none before.

DH has the same issue and wears baggier jeans, his thighs are very muscly and being so solid I suspect muscular legs would rub away a jeans even quicker.

I can't live without cycling shorts under skirts and dresses in the summer, tights obviously help in cooler times. Sweaty rubbing thighs is the worst and I doubt it would change if I lost my excess stone in weight to be an ideal 9 stone. I remember first hating my legs at age nine. I also have tiny ankles so it looks worse, boots help balance it out which is great in winter and I've got a lovely pair of summer ankle boots ready for the warmer weather this year. It's so hard to make them look ok, length of skirt/shorts makes a big difference too.

HermioneWeasley · 06/03/2016 12:03

Peacocks slim fit jeans are brilliant too

GreenGlassLove · 06/03/2016 12:44

Oh yes, more of hurricane thighs than thunder thighs. For the most part they're muscle, but the inside is chubby chubster. Luckily I'm boyish and I can get away with much thicker men's jeans.

WanderingNotLost · 07/03/2016 04:59

I love my H&M regular waist shaping skinny jeans. Not so tight that you feel like you're wearing leggings, no muffin top, they make your bum look great and £40 a pair so not toooooo pricey

Thefitfatty · 07/03/2016 05:25

The only time my thighs haven't touched was when I was teenager and underweight! I've got a pretty athletic figure, but I build muscle (and store fat) in my legs like crazy. I actually used to hate my thighs, I remember trying not to sit down in shorts or bathing suits when I was 10 because I hated the way they spread out and I thought people would notice and call be fat.
But now I love them. They're just so strong and awesome. :) (And I've got a nice pert ass too).

scarednoob · 07/03/2016 06:01

I'm with vintage - I'm an apple and I hate it so much. Massive belly and boobs and tiny bum and legs/arms is impossible to dress nicely. I haven't worn a dress since I was a small child because they look so awful; I looked v overweight even when I wasn't; and finding jeans or smart trousers is impossible as they are just baggy to the point of ridiculousness on the bum and legs.

Plus the dangerous fat gave me GD and now high cholesterol at only 38... I was also depressed to see the research about baby iq as it made me feel that my stupid body has let DD down.

So I say love the thick thighs as the alternative is way worse! My friend has a pair of spanx shorts that she swears cure what she calls her "chub rub", if that helps.

Yes

When we were younger my brother and I used to insult each other when arguing and he used to call me " thigh land " charming Grin

Gooseysgirl · 07/03/2016 06:05

Another pear here... Am an 8 on top and up to a 14 on the bottom depending on the shop. I'm finding it impossible to get trousers to fit at the moment. I get jeans from Gap, usually ok with a belt but inner seam wears out in less than a year. I wear CPs (chaf pants ie bicycle shorts style) under long dresses in summer. Tights are a god send in winter.

Shodan · 07/03/2016 08:00

Another thunder thighs signing in.

Things I have found that have helped:

Jeans with a highish lycra (or whatever the stretchy stuff they use in jeans is) content-always bootcut or at a pinch, straight leg. Skinny jeans (unless worn with knee high boots) make my legs looked like a cross between over-stuffed sausages and parsnips. Still have to wear with a belt, but no wearing out on the seams.

Roll-on deodorant on the inner thighs (I use the Mitchum 24 or 48 hour one)-lasts longer than talc.

And somewhat bizarrely-squats. Lots and lots of squats to tone up the bum-seems to lift the weight off the thighs, making them appear and feel slimmer and less prone to The Rub.

I must say, I'm very glad I didn't have a daughter- DH's legs are very chunky and muscular. The combination of both would've been disastrous, I think... Grin

ToastDemon · 07/03/2016 08:05

I'm another one who is very chunky of thigh and large of arse.
For jeans, Levi Bold Curve are great for pear people.
Mostly I wear short skirts with leggings underneath. Leggings have been a total godsend for me. Although I have to keep buying them because of course they get holes at the seam where they rub.
BMI is around bang on 25 and I exercise a lot.

80sMum · 07/03/2016 08:08

I'm another one with disproportionately large thighs! All of my trousers and jeans are too big at the waist, by several inches, because otherwise I wouldn't be able to get them past my knees!

My BMI is 21. I am 5'3" and weigh 8.5 stone but have always had huge thighs. If I wear tight clothes or anything that clings, I look as though I have stuffed something into invisible pockets! My thighs are bigger than my hips by a noticeable margin!

Branleuse · 07/03/2016 08:09

I have big thighs, but also a wide pelvis so my thighs dont rub much, but I hardly ever wear jeans or trousers as they never fit, and they make me look like an orangina bottle

80sMum · 07/03/2016 08:14

scarednoob I can't wear dresses either, for the opposite reason. To get them to fit my bottom half, they would then be 2 sizes too big on the top! I am a size 6/8 on top and a 10/12 at the bottom!

WhatsGoingOnEh · 07/03/2016 08:19

I always had thunderous thighs, until I discovered the rowing machine at the gym. Going on that bad boy MELTED it all away, saddlebags and all.

I've since piled the weight back on and my thighs are finally chubby again, but it was fantastic while it lasted, which was about 7 years

MrsKoala · 07/03/2016 08:44

I have large thighs, but i also have very broad shoulders and hips (chest and hips about 42in) so am an hourglass shape rather than a pear. My thighs aren't fat but where i keep all my strength/muscle (and fat when i have babies - as well as my upper arms Confused ).

I don't really care about BMI as it doesn't work for me, but mine is apparently 23. I do bodypump, pilates and spinning so am quite toned. I'm 5ft 10 and a size 12/14. But my thighs are large in comparison - they are 22in and my waist (when not pregnant) is 29in. Having long legs means it looks okay tho, but i do look better in skirts and dresses. Jeans have always been like the holy grail to me as i also have humungous calves (i have to get special boots and wellies to fit me).

Trills · 07/03/2016 08:51

BikeRUnSKi

about 3/4 of my weight is below the waist

This has always been true for me too, although probably not for the same reason (assuming that you do all the things in your name!)

crunchynutclustersdevilswork · 07/03/2016 08:57

I have a tendency to have more muscle and fat on my thighs but recently got them down to reasonable level. The only thing that worked for me was overall weight loss with high protein, low carb and cutting out ALL sugar and alcohol. The sugar and alcohol made a huge difference to the width of my thighs.

leedy · 07/03/2016 09:02

MY SIGNIFICANTLY-THIGHED PEOPLE!

Also have fairly broad shoulders and a not-insignificant bust but they don't quite balance out my short sturdy peasant legs (and sturdy bottom). Exercise helps (pilates, lunges and squats, sigh) but then I have muscular big thighs rather than flabby big thighs. Essentially even at my skinniest I have an, er, substantial lower half and suspect they would have to boil all the flesh off my skeleton for me to have a thigh gap. Currently a small size 12/BMI 23 (which is very small for me as I tend to build muscle/have a big frame) after a particularly vicious bout of gastroenteritis and still have the thighs of an 80s Eastern European shotputter.

I have found J Brand jeans particularly good in terms of having enough stretch/not gaping at the waist/not going baggy anywhere else, though they're pricy. Gap jeans used to be OK too though I think they've changed some of the cuts again. Also a fan of slightly a-line short skirts/dresses that basically skim past the chunky bits.

Oh, and for wearing skirts with bare legs in really hot sweaty weather, I cannot recommend Sloggi bike-short style cotton knickers enough. They are HIDEOUS ("are those granny bloomers?", said DP in horror) but they completely remove the risk of thigh rub.

I'm actually quite happy so many people seem to be the same shape as me. :)

MrsKoala · 07/03/2016 09:15

Yes a-line skirts which end mid thigh (usually meant to be knee length, but on me mid thigh) look best as well as wrap dresses and tulip skirts (but you need quite a flat stomach for those).

In the summer i use Lanacane powder between my thighs to stop chafing. Blush

FuckOffDavid · 07/03/2016 09:37

I find lanacane helps with the chafing between my thighs Blush
