To worry about a world where Donald Trump is America's president

someone please reassure me that he is unlikely to be the Republican nominee, let alone become president.

Cannot believe that anyone would take anything he says seriously or agree with any of his beyond offensive vile opinions. Like having Nick Griffin en route to becoming PM Sad.

I don't disagree Father. But the fact is he was elected at one point, despite all his flaws, mistakes, obvious shortcomings etc.

There is the old adage that elections are lost by governments rather than won by anyone. But still, in the face of all the obvious reasons to not vote for him, or to vote for someone else, the majority of Americans who chose to vote in that election, voted for him.

If anything, the fact that the time he got the lion's share of the popular vote came after the 2000 debacle makes that share of the vote more ridiculous not less.

So, to me, that does pretty much indicate anything can happen in US politics. He only got in the first time cos his brother fiddled the figures ffs, why would anyone vote for someone like that? Beggars belief. And after all that, the fiddling brother made a run for nomination too...

In the face of that, Trump doesn't seem so unlikely. Doesn't seem any more of good idea though.

What worries me is that Democrats and Republicans have alternated.
It would now be time for a Republican president. Shock

cozietoesie · 03/03/2016 18:35

Well hurricane naming now alternates, Lweji. I wouldn't draw any conclusions from that if I were in the middle of a 110 mph gale.

travellinglighter · 03/03/2016 18:42

I hope the republicans do make him their candidate. Clinton will win. If I was hispanic, african american or a woman then I’d hate him even more than I hate him now.

Given how much he hates “Losers” then it’s my main ambition in life at the moment to follow him round shouting LOSER when he gets defeated.

Every American Presidential gives me the Heebie jeebies. I look at the list of candidates and think “Oh God, they wouldn’t?? Would they??”

I love the fact that God told most of the candidates to run for president. When God is talking to you there can only be one of three things happening.

  1. God is actually talking to the candidate and in that case, fair play to the big fella. Nice of him to take an interest after not saying anything for 5000 years.
  1. The candidate is hearing voices. I worry that the voices may say “Smite the russians/chinese/french/Papua New Guineans and whole countries will go up in clouds of radioactive smoke.
  1. He’s lying. Most likely and obviously means that the candidate is not suited for high office(Or very suited).

The big problem is how can you tell which of the three options are true. Maybe we the rule should be that if any candidate claims that god told him to run then they shouldn’t be inaugurated on the whitehouse lawn, they should be inaugurated ON the whitehouse swimming pool. If they come out wet then they get locked up in the loony bin or be made to wear a sign saying LIAR.

SenecaFalls · 03/03/2016 18:43

Trump is not wholly self-funded. He has a "Donate" button on his website.

And as for saying what he thinks, on another thread some posters are actually defending him on the basis that his personal opinions are not as extreme as what he says. I am not really sure what he thinks, but his public statements are scary.

lljkk · 03/03/2016 18:48

Jeb Bush is claiming that Trump set this all up to guarantee a Clinton landslide. That nothing else would make Hilary Clinton popular enough to actually win.

YANBU to OP. X fingers that ordinary American voters for all their faults, can't stomach the guy in Oval office either. As others point out, we don't even know what Trump really stands for. At least with Cruz you'd know you were getting a zealot (or we could have a crazy zealot in Carson's case). Whereas Trump just says whatever whim comes into his head.

Lweji · 03/03/2016 18:59

Pointing out that his actual views are not as extreme as he has shown during his campaign is not defending him.Hmm

It means he's more of a liar than most politicians. And will certainly don't care about principles to reach his ends.

SenecaFalls · 03/03/2016 19:30

Lweji I didn't say that every statement pointing out that his private views are not as extreme as his public statements is defending him.

But these kinds of observations are being used by some on another thread by people who appear to support him. Sort of like "don't worry, he's not really anti-choice." Well, I'm worried because his public statements, rather than his private beliefs, are likely to guide his policies and his nominations to the Supreme Court.

AcrossthePond55 · 03/03/2016 19:48

Those Trump is self funded need to watch John Oliver's YouTube video on Trump. I'm on the app so can't post a link

LineyReborn · 03/03/2016 19:51

That John Oliver clip is excellent.

Who knew Trump was sensitive about the size of his fingers? And yet not his hair. Grin

PeteHornberger · 03/03/2016 20:06

Made me smile...and then cry with terror.

Lweji · 03/03/2016 20:09

SenecaFalls

There's at least one deluded pp who keeps saying The Donald is at the same time
a) the real deal - saying it like it is
b) saying whatever it takes to get elected

There's little hope for that one.

As for the rest, I have the feeling that he is not as bad as he claims he'll be, or his voters want him to be.
I'm more worried about the number of people who agree with what he says at the moment than what he actually thinks.

FatherReboolaConundrum · 03/03/2016 20:16

Sssh, Lweji, he hasn't found this thread yet, if we're really quiet he won't hear us.

I don't think what he really thinks about anything matters in the slightest - who knows what any politician really thinks? Who knows what Dubya really thought when he was in office? No-one, including himself, I'd bet. The only things that matter with politicians are what they feel they have to say to get and hold power and what they think they have to do once they're there.

Piffpaffpoff · 03/03/2016 20:22

Ive only got halfway through this thread but you were all talking about his hair and I had to post my favourite Trump photo ever.

Visit to the Scottish Parliament + a balloon = comedy gold.

SenecaFalls · 03/03/2016 20:52

Lweji, I agree; it's his supporters that we need to be worried about. One thing about it, for the first time in living memory, my Republican relatives and I have found something political that we agree on in that regard.

Yoksha · 04/03/2016 16:15

Hope this works. First time doing this tekkie stuff.

WahhHelpMe · 04/03/2016 17:26

I'm scared, I like Sanders but think Clinton will get the nomination which could literally destroy the democrats as the investigation against her is getting serious and if she's found guilty then it's a serious offence.

lljkk · 04/03/2016 17:52

Can you explain the Clinton investigation in 3 simple sentences, Wahh?

WahhHelpMe · 04/03/2016 17:57

Clinton is under 3 different investigations by the FBI including one for having information on an unprotected private hard drive which is against protocol and a risk to national security. Indictment could be inprisoned I believe

Katarzyna79 · 04/03/2016 17:59

OP the same people voted in George Bush junior, so yes i can believe it. I don't think he will make it, but if he does one good thing may come out of it, he'll dish out free toupees?

derxa · 04/03/2016 20:15

I like Donald better than Hilary. Is that OK?

lertgush · 04/03/2016 20:27

Clinton is under 3 different investigations by the FBI

What are the 3 different investigations? Where can I read more?

ChemicalReaction · 04/03/2016 21:15

Can someone explain why everyone hates Clinton please? I feel like I don't know enough about her and her website is a hard slog to get through and is probably full of spin!

WahhHelpMe · 04/03/2016 21:27

Lertgush, www.washingtonpost.com/politics/clinton-foundation-received-subpoena-from-state-department-investigators/2016/02/11/ca5125b2-cce4-11e5-88ff-e2d1b4289c2f_story.html

I'm not 100% sure they are all FBI now, but if you watch the video it explains all 3. The first one with the FBI, I'm pretty sure the FBI have confirmed its a criminal investigation now and I'm pretty sure I've seen people say she 100% broke the law
